Chapter 01:58 Chapter 0158 +25 BONUS When I was finished telling Viona my storyâeverything from my pregnancy to my death to my rebirth, all of it from beginning to endâthe room was utterly silent. Down below, the sounds of the bustling city rose into the air, but I hardly heard any of it. Only the sound of my blood rushing through my ears filled that space.
Viona said nothing for a long time, her mouth working uselessly. Her face had gone pale, her eyes blown wide like she had just seen a ghost.
Iâm sure I looked much the same as her.
And th then, suddenly, she.... started laughing. âHannah, this is ridiculous,â she crowed, smacking me on the arm and rising from the couch to walk to her kitchen. âDid Amber put you up to this?â
I furrowed my brow and followed her, watching incredulously as she began casually preparing two cups of tea. âViona, Iâm serious,â I said.
She chuckled again. âYeah. Sure.â
I âViona.â Stomping my feet, I circled around the counter island and gripped her shoulders to force her to look at meâso she could see my sincerity. âIâm serious.â
For a few long moments, Viona blinked at me, her face slowly blanching once more.
âHannah...â
âLook, I know how it sounds,â I said, releasing her and stepping back, âbut itâs true. All of that stuff that happened at the acceptance ceremony with Zoe? Yeah, in my past life, I didnât handle it well and faced a lot of public scrutiny. That was why I took it so well this time; because I knew it was coming.â
Viona swallowed, hastily shaking her head. âOh, honey,â she breathed, âyou need help. Iâm sorry, Hannah, I know youâre going through a lot, but itâs simply not possible.â
âWhen have I ever lied to you, Viona?!â I snapped.
Her eyes widened even further, if that was even possible. Her mouth waggled as she tried to come up with a retort, but clearly there was none.
Finally, gripping her hair, she whirled around and strode over to the window. âOkay, okay... So letâs just say, for the sake of the argument, that this really did happen...â She paused, and I could hear her audibly gulp.
What about Noah? He doesnât know any of this?â
âNo. And he never will.â
âEven the baby?â she asked.
felt my chest clench at the mention of it. âI might tell him about the baby when the divorce is finalized. But not a moment before.
And likely not at all.â
Viona whirled around, her mouth hanging agape. âHanrah, you canât keep his child from him,â she breathed. âThe whole... rebirth thing is one thing, but your baby? His heir? Heâll find out anyway!â
1/2 #25 BONUS Chapter 0158 âAnd if he does, then Iâll be protected,â I said. âI already made him promise that once weâre divorced, I can take anyone or anything that I want from Nightcrest back to my own pack. That includes our child, although he doesnât know it yet.â
Viona continued to stare at me incredulously.
âLook, Vi,â I continued, âI know how it sounds. But I canât tell Noah about the baby, I just canât. Because if I do, heâll make me stay in this marriage. And...â I paused, my throat constricting. â...I canât do it, Viona. I canât stay in a loveless marriage forever. If I do, then I know Iâll just wind up dead again.â
After I spoke, I looked away and clenched my jaw hard. No, I wouldnât cry. I needed to be strong, but damn, it was hard.
Viona sighed softly and crossed the room again, gripping my hands in hers. âI understand,â she said gently. âBut... is it really so loveless?â
âWh...What?â
She shrugged. âI mean, it seems like heâs trying. Maybe you two could... I donât know, rekindle what you once had.â
I let out a wry laugh. âFat chance of that happening.â
There was a long silence after thatâlong enough for Vionaâs words to sink in, at least. Maybe she was right... Maybe there was a way to rekindle our love. Unlikely, but there had to be at least a shred of a chance.
âHannah,â Viona finally said, âI wonât tell anyone because I respect you and love you. And if you decide not to tell him, then Iâll support you through that.â
âThanks, Viona.â
âBut...â She paused, fixing me with a stern look. I braced myself for what was to come. âAt least consider telling him,â she said softly, her hand coming to rest on my belly. âJust consider it.â
I swallowed hard and looked away. âIâll think about it, Viona. I will.â
