Xiao Zhan looked back up at the man whose eyes were fixated on him. He felt like he needed to apologize or something, but no words came out. This situation seemed unreal.
Why is he here?
This man was the current sect leader for Gusu Lan and was supposed to be in his seclusion. Right now, he was standing in front of Xiao Zhan. He was once a famous cultivator of his generation for his cultivation skills at such young age. A romantic who chose to separate himself from the society for penance of marrying his wife. A father who had never been a father to his own children.
Xiao Zhan didn't know how to feel about the man in front of him. All he knew was, he was supposed to be a parent to both Lan Wangji and Lan Xichen. He took a glance at Lan Wangji, studying his emotions for a brief moment. He could see clearly how unsettled Lan Wangji was at his father's sudden appearance, but he seemed to be holding it together. He obviously had a hard time digesting the fact that his father just came out his seclusion and revealed himself to the world in broad daylight. Despite being mad at Lan Wangji, Xiao Zhan couldn't help but to sympathize with his miserable childhood.
This cultivation world has terrible parenting conducts. The adults here suck. They all should be ashamed of themselves. It is unfair for any child to have a father who is fully capable to raise his children himself but yet chose to abandon his paternal duties as self-punishment. All in the name of righteousness. Righteousness, my ass. This is so messed up! Wait, this is not the time to lecture someone of their bad parenting choices. I need to focus. He is still Lan Zhan's father which means, I can't afford to be rude. Not now.
Xiao Zhan shook those thoughts off and regained his composure. He clasped his hands together and bowed politely, "I apologize for my insolence, Sect Leader Lan. I didn't know that you would be here."
Qingheng-Jun's gaze was soft as he watched Xiao Zhan, he spoke with a smile still gracing his lips, "That's quite alright, young man. It was my mistake to startle you when you were concentrating on your formation. May I know your name?"
"My name is Wei Wuxian from Yunmeng Jiang, Sect Leader Lan." Xiao Zhan bowed again.
"Oh, you must be the Young Master Wei that Qiren told me about." Qingheng-Jun responded. He studied Xiao Zhan for a while before saying, "You have a lot of potential, Young Master Wei, judging by this formation. What kind of array is this?"
"This is just an experimental array for protective barrier." Xiao Zhan scratched the back of his head bashfully, "I don't want to bring an untested idea to the formal discussion tomorrow, hence, a test run."
"It will do fine, I assure you. Are these modifications completed yet?" he asked, gesturing to the array.
Xiao Zhan paused for a bit, thinking if there was any element that he still missing. He looked back carefully at the layers of complicated arrays he built up. So far, there was no other elements that he wanted to alter, so he answered, "Yes, for now it is."
Sect Leader Lan walked back towards the array. He looked at the array and observed carefully every little detail. He then turned around, facing Xiao Zhan, "Well then, I'm sure you can explain the structure and composition later in the formal discussion."
Xiao Zhan bowed respectfully, "Yes Sect Leader Lan."
Lan Qiren and Lan Xichen made their way to the center hastily after dispersing the crowds.
Lan Xichen approached his father with a calm smile on his face. "Father, I am happy that you decided to grace us with your presence today."
Lan Qiren greeted his elder brother, "Brother, what brings you out of seclusion?"
Qingheng Jun turned to face them, "The shockwave was hard to ignore. The whole mountain shook so I had to see what happened for myself."
Yep, no shit Xiao Zhan! I just caused an unnatural earthquake! Why else someone in seclusion would be shaken out of their isolation? Why am I always digging my own grave?
He looked down at Xiao Zhan, "Young Master Wei here had created a powerful barrier with interesting mechanisms."
There seemed to be no judgement or condescending tone to his statement. Instead, he sounded curious and excited about Xiao Zhan's display of power. His curiosity was probably more than justified considering that this was the first time he saw an array with such intricate and complex construction.
What in the world... What's with this reaction? Is he excited?
Xiao Zhan bowed to apologize once more, "My apologies for the disturbance, Sect Leader Lan. I did not mean for the test run to have such a big impact."
Lan Qiren yelled at him, "Wei Wuxian, we talked about this before. Loud noises are forbidden in Cloud Recesses."
Geez, Old Man Lan. Your voice is a loud noise to you know? My poor ears...
Xiao Zhan almost rolled his eyes but stopped himself. He held his tongue and responded courteously, "Lanxian-sheng, I apologize. this is my miscalculation. I'll be careful next time."
"Qiren, I believe this young man has done no wrong." Qingheng-Jun said firmly. He said with an impressed look, "This Young Master Wei is a very talented man."
"Talented but a troublemaker." Lan Qiren grumbled under his breath. "Like his mother."
"Lanxian-sheng, can you please enlighten me on what kind of trouble did I make this time?" Xiao Zhan interjected, annoyed with the elder man's comments. He was tired of hearing him criticize him at every turn. He wasn't feeling particularly impressed with the old man's personal grudge either.
What is wrong with this bitter old man today? Why do you have to drag my mother in this? Not today, old man. Not today. I'm not in a good mood to put up with your illogical animosity.
Lan Qiren glared at him, he scorned, "Wei Wuxian! Do you always talk back to your elder? How impudent!"
Yes! Haven't you noticed? I always talk back especially when you are being unreasonable.
Xiao Zhan shrugged indifferently and stated plainly "Lanxian-sheng, it is a legitimate question. One does not simply treat other with contempt for no reason. It's against the rules of Gusu Lan."
"You are a disrespectful child!" Lan Qiren roared at Xiao Zhan.
That's make the two of us!
"Lanxian-sheng, may I remind you that this array formation was one that you had personally requested? It is only normal to test out its design and functionality to determine its effectiveness. It is a standard procedure to do so. You would not expect me to present such a highly refined array and not perform the required testing procedures, would you?" Xiao Zhan calmly rebutted as he stood straight and tall. He wasn't intimidated by his outburst; he stood his ground in an unwavering manner.
Lan Qiren was speechless, staring at him with wide eyes. His mouth opened slightly, unable to comprehend the words that had escaped the younger man's lips. Before Lan Qiren could answer, Qingheng-Jun soft laugh interrupted their staring contest.
Xiao Zhan was taken aback at that unanticipated reaction. He looked at him and saw the amused glint in his golden eyes.
Ah I see it now. This is where Lan Xichen got his personality from.
"Qiren, I don't think Young Master Wei is being disrespectful. If anything, he is being honest and meticulous. Besides, we should thank him for providing us the means to complete the array." Qingheng-Jun said in a gentle manner.
Exactly!
Lan Qiren glared at his elder brother who sided with Wei Wuxian instead of him. His face contorted as he tried to find some form of retort. He opened and closed his mouth several times trying to find the right words to say. In the end, he just scoffed and muttered something unintelligible under his breath.
Looking at the interesting scene in front of him, Lan Xichen was trying his best to hold his laughter inside but couldn't stop the smile from appearing on his face. His father's behavior was amusing to him. He stepped forward to pacify his uncle, "Uncle, please don't take Young Master Wei's words to heart. It really isn't his intention to cause offense. Why don't we leave Young Master Wei to focus on the preparations for the meeting? We will discuss further tomorrow in regard to his proposed improvements."
Lan Xichen's words somehow had managed to get through to Lan Qiren. He conceded at his nephew's request and sighed angrily before making his way out of the training field without further complaint.
Xiao Zhan grinned triumphantly in his heart as he glanced sideways at his lover; it seemed like Lan Wangji was actually pleased at his father's response as well. Although, he hid his amusement behind a stoic expression. Lan Wangji's caught his gaze and Xiao Zhan averted his eyes lightning fast.
Nope, you're not going to charm me with your smile this time. I'm still pissed at you. I won't fall for it again!
"Wangji, Xichen. Why don't we have dinner together?" Qingheng-Jun looked at both of his sons. Lan Xichen immediately agreed while Lan Wangji gave his father a hesitant look. However, he ultimately agreed without much protest. The elder gave Xiao Zhan a polite smile and asked, "Young Master Wei, would you like to join us?"
Huh? No, thank you. Please spend some time with your children. That's the least you can do for them.
Xiao Zhan was alarmed at the invitation. He had enough of the Lan family today. He quickly rejected as polite as he can, "I have to decline, Sect Leader Lan. I would never dare interrupt your meeting with your children."
"Nonsense!" Sect Leader Lan insisted. "It would be my honor if you join us, Young Master Wei."
Xiao Zhan was about to say no again when Lan Wangji suddenly spoke up for him, "Father, Wei Ying needs to rest. He has been working nonstop all day. Please excuse him."
A glint of curiosity flashed on Qingheng-Jun's eyes with how Lan Wangji addressed the disciple of Yunmeng Jiang. He replied as he scrutinized his youngest son's impassive face, "Very well, Wangji. Shall we postpone the dinner?"
"Oh, don't let my absence interrupt your meeting with your children, Sect Master Lan." Xiao Zhan hurriedly suggested. "You should proceed your dinner plan."
Be a good father for once. Even if it is for one dinner.
Lan Wangji frowned slightly at his remark but did not comment further. He didn't really want to leave Xiao Zhan's side at this moment. He wanted to do nothing else but to resolve the issue between the two of them.
"Then, it settled. I shall meet you two at the hall later." Qingheng-Jun addressed his children. Both of them politely nodded and bowed.
Xiao Zhan let out a deep sigh as soon as everyone was gone from his sight. Everyone except one.
"Wei Ying." Lan Wangji called out softly.
So, you have come to realize that your plan is ridiculous huh?
Xiao Zhan remained silent as he stared at his lover blankly before returning his focus back on the array. Or pretending to.
Lan Wangji frowned at his lack of response. He asked, "Are you not tired?"
"No." Xiao Zhan responded curtly, forcing his mind to keep busy, as he kept his head down.
Well, it was not a lie. I am not tired. The prototype worked as intended. Albeit too well. But the robe probably won't last long with this much of power surge. Now I know why Ironman had many suits.
He pondered on more unrelated stuffs as he tried hard to ignore the presence of the Second Jade in the vicinity.
"If so, why did you decline Father's invitation?" Lan Wangji asked again.
"It's only polite for me not to get involved with your family matters," Xiao Zhan answered emotionlessly as he finally looked up to him, "Besides, there's nothing wrong with spending time with your family, Second Young Master Lan."
"Now, I've got to get going." He tried to walk away before things got heated up. As soon as he was about to turn away, Lan Wangji's hand wrapped tightly around his wrist, preventing him from escaping. He whirled around and stared into Lan Wangji's golden eyes, "Second Young Master Lan, please let go of my hand. This is inappropriate."
Upon their physical contact, Lan Wangji was slightly confused that Xiao Zhan's energy didn't seem to dwindle as much as he predicted, even after pulling such stunt earlier. He took a deep breath before speaking, "Wei Ying, don't go."
"I am keeping a distance, just like you asked. So, let go of my hand." Xiao Zhan demanded and pulled his wrist from the tight grip. Lan Wangji simply seized a hold onto the hand again.
Lan Wangji pleaded gently, "Please, let's talk about this."
Xiao Zhan, don't give in yet. He needs to learn what kind of damage his stupid plan can do.
"No! What is there to talk about?" Xiao Zhan retorted as he turned away to avoid Lan Wangji's pleading gaze.
Lan Wangji shook his head and held onto Xiao Zhan firmly, "Do not to call me young master. Please stop doing it."
"Second Young Master Lan," Xiao Zhan replied bitterly. "How else can I address you? When you asked me to remain away from you, you never specified the extent of my physical distance! So, I suppose that we are just strangers to each other now."
"Wei Ying..." Lan Wangji sighed heavily. "That is not what I meant. We are not strangers. Please don't call me that."
"Why should I do that? It is your decision to keep a distance from me. I am simply honoring your wishes." Xiao Zhan disputed obstinately, "Isn't that what you told me earlier? I'm just giving you what you want since you were so adamant about it.
"This is not what I want." Lan Wangji argued.
"This is not what I want either. And you know it." Xiao Zhan barked angrily, "But you refused to listen to me."
"I didn't say we have to break our relationship," Lan Wangji said sternly.
"Tell me this, then. How long did you plan to keep us separated?" Xiao Zhan snapped as he pulled himself out of Lan Wangji's grip, "Were you planning on keeping us apart until the end of time?"
"Of course not!" Lan Wangji argued earnestly. "I just wanted to protect you."
Xiao Zhan questioned furiously, "Do I look like I need protection? Do I look weak to you, Lan Wangji?"
Lan Wangji's heart clenched painfully as Xiao Zhan spoke those two last words. "You're never weak, Wei Ying. I'm just scared that I'll lose control of myself. That I will hurt you."
Xiao Zhan glared at him, "Well, I am hurting right now."
The silence that followed and hung at the atmosphere between them felt heavy enough to suffocate. Lan Wangji looked like he wanted to cry but was holding back any tears in order to be strong. The sight made Xiao Zhan's heart clench tightly, and the look of anguish that filled Lan Wangji's eyes brought a sharp sting of pain into Xiao Zhan's chest. His throat constricted, and he felt hot prickles rise along his skin. Tears began to prickle at the corners of his eyes.
Damn it, I will not cry. I am not going to cry.
"Wei Ying, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to hurt you." Lan Wangji finally spoke up as he lowered his head and his expression turned even more somber.
"Just leave me alone." Xiao Zhan said quietly as he looked away.
Lan Zhan, you need to suffer for at least one day. After all, you made me go through the whole day without you yesterday. So now, it's your turn and then we'll be even.
"Wei Ying-"
It's only fair, Lan Zhan.
"Lan Zhan, please. "Xiao Zhan interrupted him, turning back to face him. The hurt in Lan Wangji's eyes was palpable. Tears threatened to spill when Xiao Zhan heard the pain he could hear in his voice. It broke his heart to see the pain and helplessness in his lover's beautiful eyes. He toned down his voice as he muttered softly, "Don't make me say those hurtful things again. Just leave me alone for now."
Lan Wangji sighed heavily. He knew he made a huge mistake for saying that they should stay away from each other. Although he tried convincing himself it was only for Xiao Zhan's protection, part of him knew deep down that it had been selfish of him. It was obvious he would not be able to stand it if they kept distancing themselves from each other. He didn't know what to do to fix this. This was their first argument after all. They had never fought before, and this newfound disagreement felt foreign and strange. Maybe he should just let Xiao Zhan calmed down and give him some space. They both deserved it.
"Alright, Wei Ying. If that is what you wish." Lan Wangji finally acquiesced. "But, promise me one thing, Wei Ying."
"Hm?"
"Promise me we'll talk again once you're calm enough." Lan Wangji requested.
Xiao Zhan nodded wordlessly. As much as he hated to admit it, he could not be apart for too long from Lan Wangji either. Even one day was a torture. But Lan Wangji needed a wakeup call. He was just trying to help him see things clearly of what would happen if he stubbornly insisted on them keeping a distance.
Let's step this ridiculous fight tomorrow.
Lan Wangji's heart clenched painfully at Xiao Zhan's dejected expression. He wondered if they really needed this distance between them in the end. He just hoped it wouldn't be detrimental to their relationship. He reached out his hand and gently cupped Xiao Zhan's face in his hand and tried to sound calm as he spoke, "Please rest early. Tomorrow is a busy day."
"You have dinner to attend." Xiao Zhan stated as Lan Wangji brushed his thumb against his cheek tenderly. Lan Wangji was slightly relieved when he didn't move away from his touch this time, he sighed sadly before he walked away.
That night, Xiao Zhan tossed and turned for hours. Every time he closed his eyes, all he saw was Lan Wangji's beautiful golden eyes filled with pain. He wanted to run to him and kiss the pain away from those beautiful eyes.
This is backfiring on me. Damn it. Why does my heart feel so heavy?! How can I sleep peacefully at night knowing that this beautiful man is suffering? I don't want to hurt him anymore than what he already is. Why am I so petty?? I must be crazy! I am an idiot!
Xiao Zhan groaned. At last, he stayed awake for entire night keeping himself busy with tuning his prototype enchanted robe version 2.0 to make prolong its durability and to reduce the output of the generated power. It was too dangerous for a general setting where he didn't need to deal a burst damage. He needed to be able to control his energy flow with more precision and accuracy. At last, he only slept for about two hours.
The formal discussion was held at the main hall. The all-white and solemn atmosphere felt like the clan was holding a funeral instead. Xiao Zhan shuddered as he entered the room, feeling the pressure bearing down upon him. The elders were seated in the front at both sides of the hall, but they were unusually quiet. Even though Xiao Zhan did not really belong in this sect, he still managed to grab their attention for his exceptional cultivation level, knowledge and his talents in various fields at a mere age of fifteen. He was definitely a very prominent presence among the younger generation. He even managed to draw out the Sect Leader Lan out from his decade of seclusion. It was the first time after more than ten years that the Qingheng-Jun leading a formal meeting. Lan Qiren was looking a little dismayed at the sudden change as well.
Lan Wangji sat at the end of the room; his eyes closed as if he was meditating. Sleep deprived; Xiao Zhan was cranky to say the least. The robe did help him to feel energized despite his lack of sleep. However, it didn't solve the problem that his heart ached whenever he looked at Lan Wangji and he was mentally exhausted as well. He was not in a mood to sugarcoat today. He simply wanted the day to be done and over with so that he could end the stupid fight that was keeping him awake almost all night.
"Let's begin. Today we discuss about the array formation of the barrier." Sect Leader Lan said solemnly. "Young Master Wei, it came to my attention that there was a notion of claim that the current Gusu Lan barrier is flawed, and you can fix it."
He inhaled deeply before answering in his utmost decorum, "Sect Leader Lan, although the words of such claims did not come from my mouth, but I still am inclined to tell the truth as is. The barrier is strong, but its flaws are not insurmountable."
Everyone was surprised to hear that Xiao Zhan bold reply without blinking. He continued confidently. "I can easily breach the barrier with a simple talisman."
Of course, he was met with loud exclamations and protests from several elders.
"That is impossible! How can a simple talisman do that?" Lan Qiren questioned incredulously.
Xiao Zhan replied plainly, "Shufu, believe in putting words to action. If I can't do it, I won't say it. After all, I am here due to that very reason, am I not?"
Lan Qiren was rendered speechless with his brazen answer, but he decided not to argue with the insolent child as he probably would end up with utter defeat and only humiliate himself in the process.
"Very well, Young Master Wei. You may show us after we finished discussing your proposal." Qingheng-Jun was intrigued with his brimming confidence as he spoke, "We should continue to discuss the details of the formation that you had built. The system you're using is unconventional and I never see one like that. Is it something you developed by yourself?"
"Yes." Xiao Zhan answered without missing a beat.
"Can you elaborate how did you construct the formation further?"
"Structurally, it is a multi-dimensional array. It is an array that comprises of five dimensional matrices within it. In a matrix, dimensions are represented by rows and columns. Every element in this array is making up a sub-array and can be implemented by fitting in a list function inside another list function, which is basically a nesting operation. The principle of the formation lies in the multidimensional properties in it. Let say a single line in a sketch is one dimensional, a square is two dimensional and a cube is three dimensional. All those lines are different versions of a single line, but that single line is the foundation of this entire array. Each element is defined by two subscripts, the row index and the column index. A three-dimensional array, for example, uses three subscripts which represent pages or sheets of elements." Xiao Zhan explained in detail, word-for-word. He looked around as it was too silent for a discussion, only to see people were looking puzzled.
Qingheng-Jun, however, was an exception, "From what I saw yesterday, it looks like you build it by projecting multiplex of cubes onto a plane through three vertices that are all adjacent to the same vertex. It somewhat resembled a hexagram of sort. Are you using linear algebra, Young Master Wei?
Xiao Zhan tried to conceal the shock that he felt when hearing Qingheng Jun say these things. It was obvious that he knew exactly what he was talking about. Thankfully for Xiao Zhan, Wei Wuxian had mastered all of the six arts, which include mathematics. Coupled with his own knowledge on computer programming which used plenty of algebraic methods and numbers to present itself.
Not a hexagram but a Hexeract. But what the hell... Is he a mathematic genius or something?
He put on his best act of proprietary as he replied, "You almost got it right, Sect Leader Lan. The algorithm was based on linear equations, but the theorem is different. It does look like a hexagram in one linear plane, but the matrices allow of multidimensional vector spaces and linear maps. Hence, a six-dimensional hypercube in terms of geometry."
"I see. So, the structure of the array is the result of an exponential model of space with three dimensionality points multiplied by four dimensions squared." Qingheng Jun continued to ramble on, "A mathematical construct that looks simple on the outside but has the complexity of a five-dimensional structure within it. Interesting."
Damn. What have I gotten myself into? Oh well, at least, someone understood.
"That's absolutely right, Sect Leader Lan." Xiao Zhan nodded.
"You've mastered the art of spatial algebra and applied it to the field of arrays. " Qingheng Jun stated proudly. He seemed rather impressed with Xiao Zhan.
All the elders seemed genuinely surprised to hear such intellectual conversation between their sect leader and the young cultivator. It was like listening to a different language altogether.
Qingheng-Jun asked enthusiastically, "So tell me, Young Master Wei, how do you structure the pathways of energy? I can see a certain pattern, but I couldn't make out all its components."
It's a modern world technology of electricity supply.
Xiao Zhan explained as he swiftly drew a schematic on a big piece of paper that he unrolled on the floor. His explanation came smoothly, without any superfluous words. "The chain of power source goes like this. Spiritual energy is channeled into the core which then go through a circuit connected to the second layer with amplifiers built in on each node. Every middle layer is equipped with transformers and converter. These transformers are used in order to convert the stored energy in the network into electrical energy. Finally, the first layer of the system uses the capacitors to convert excess energy back into electrical power and the second layer use the converter for converting this excess energy into energy storage..."
The diagram was drawn down to every component of the system. There were so many layers and connections. He drew them all with without missing any of the lines, rows, columns, nodes and symbols. Each layer looked much larger than the last. In fact, some of them looked more complicated than even the one on top of the other. As he was drawing, he didn't stop explaining either. His hands moved quickly, gliding smoothly on the paper. He spoke at full speed, leaving no room for error or interjections.
Oh God, this sounds like the most boring science fiction novel I've ever read. Just endless diagrams and complex algorithms! Even I feel bored hearing myself. This must be how my science teachers felt.
Qingheng Jun listened intently to his explanation while studying the diagram carefully. "Young Master Wei, your understanding of the mathematics and physics are extremely remarkable."
It wasn't that impressive. Most people would consider it boring. Did this man keep himself busy in seclusion with mathematics and physics or something? He could have used that time to spend more time with his children. If he could understand linear algebra very well, he should have tried to understand the consequences of his actions and how they affected his sons.
Xiao Zhan sighed internally. He really needed to stop thinking this way. What was important was that Qingheng Jun approved of his designs.
"In a glance, it is pretty similar to the most complex textbook method on building a lattice array formation in the library. The difference is conventional method relies on a hierarchy of arrays." Xiao Zhan pointed out.
"And what does that entail to?" Qingheng-Jun asked.
"It is easy to breach a hierarchical array. You just take down one of the formations and the whole structure will be thrown into an error. Meanwhile, the sub-arrays in this multidimensional array, are looped and nested together, each elements have specific functions and if one part is attacked, it would trigger a backup array to take place. Theoretically, the whole array could be rerouted to protect itself from being breached by enemies. This cycle would repeat indefinitely unless the main core is damaged, or the supply of power is ceased." Xiao Zhan answered as a matter-of-factly.
Many elders were confused when they heard Xiao Zhan explain it so comprehensively. It sounded simple enough, but it was hard to fathom.
"Meaning, it is impenetrable?" One of the Elders finally dared to ask.
"In theory, yes." Xiao Zhan confirmed.
Another Elder sighed heavily and stood up, "Young Master Wei, I don't think most of us could understand what you just explained. It is too confusing."
Xiao Zhan looked at the elder, "How could it be confusing?"
"It is to a point that I don't even know what I don't know." The old man admitted bluntly.
Hearing this caused Xiao Zhan to sigh.
Did you all not pay any attention to what I just painstakingly drew just now?! What a waste of my saliva. There is no point of explaining this in detail when most of them don't even have a clue about simple math. Then, why bother asking me to do this discussion?? I might as well have a private conversation with Qingheng-Jun and his sons instead!
"Young Master Wei, I think what they're trying to say is, not everyone can interpret those complexity as easy as you. Your explanation is very advanced, and you make sense, but it seems too complicated and far beyond most people's comprehension. Your intelligence is impressive and beyond us. You're just a genius." Lan Xichen stated kindly when he saw the dismay written on Xiao Zhan's face.
"What's the use of being a genius if no one could understand me?" Xiao Zhan muttered to himself while massaging the bridge of his nose.
Let's just try simplifying it then.
Xiao Zhan concluded his presentation tiredly, "The analogy goes like this. The conventional method is in a form of staircase. The layers are stacked vertically one above another and connected to each other. Each layer contain multiple rooms with the last layer contains the core. The problem is the rooms are only linked to within its own floor and not cohesive with other rooms in separate layer. If a single layer was to break, the entire structure is bound to collapse."
Now, there was collective exclamation of understanding echoed throughout the hall.
Xiao Zhan continued, "The multidimensional array is akin to an onion with a cell regeneration ability. The layers are like a wall and within the wall, you will see that it is made of hundreds of more onions and all these onions are chained together in every directions. You need to peel each small onions to break through the next layer and the small onions have the ability to self-heal after a short period of time. Even if you managed to peel one layer away, it is just the outer layer and the next one is still standing. This defensive mechanism makes the structure stable. To reach the innermost layer, you would have to peel thousands and thousands of onions. Those onions will sting your eyes and make you cry very badly. So, you will have to cry indefinitely without a guarantee that you will pass through the first layer itself. That's the passive offensive features of it."
The audience seemed to understand the simplified description much better. As the elders started to discuss among themselves, Xiao Zhan finally got to rest his vocal cord. He had successfully completed his objective for today.
Finally! I should've just started with that! Goddammit, I can't wait for this to be over with!
Xiao Zhan felt like he could breathe again as they started nodding at him approvingly as though they had been told some secret they never knew they wanted. He was mentally tired of explaining everything to everyone and he had enough of it. He propped his elbow on the table, staring blankly at an empty space but his mind was busy thinking about ending his fight and make up with Lan Wangji, who looked lost in thought. He was thinking the same thing as Xiao Zhan.
Lan Xichen chuckled slightly as he caught the displeasure that was Xiao Zhan trying to hide under his façade of calmness. He went over to where Xiao Zhan was seated and spoke with a gentle but playful tone, "Did anyone upset you, Young Master Wei?"
Ah, this damned ability to discern emotions of yours is getting a little annoying, Zewu-Jun.
Xiao Zhan responded coolly, "I'm not, Zewu-Jun."
"Then why are you frowning?" Lan Xichen queried although he could easily decipher that it was frustration that Xiao Zhan felt.
Why wouldn't I frown? I'm being interrogated by these damn fools! This whole thing is tiring. And I still need to settle the issue between me and your baby brother! Apparently, I can't live without thinking about him all day and I am starting to think I won't ever be able to! My idiot teenager self misses him too much!
Xiao Zhan cleared his throat and said truthfully, "Hmm... Maybe you're right. I'm a little upset."
Lan Xichen shook his head with a soft laugh. He took a glance at his brother who seemed to be very moody, he smiled, "Ah, I see! I understand completely why you're upset now, Young Master Wei."
This time, however, the expression that Xiao Zhan sent Lan Xichen was less than amused. He just hummed as a response.
You're not helping!
"That's what I thought, Young Master Wei." Lan Xichen said smilingly.
Note to self. Ask this guy for a duel one day. I really need to kick his fine ass for once. Just once.
Xiao Zhan rolled his eyes which earned him another chuckle from Lan Xichen.
Qingheng-Jun approached them and commented, "It seems like the both of you have quite a bit in common."
Xiao Zhan could feel Lan Wangji sharp and cold gaze at his father's remark from where he sat.
Seems like someone is jealous.
Xiao Zhan mused silently and answered simply, "I suppose we do, Sect Leader Lan."
Lan Xichen raised his eyebrow, feeling a little amused with the answer. He could see Lan Wangji stiffened with dissatisfaction. A smile formed on his face as he jokingly added more fuel to the existing fire, "Young Master Wei is a lovely person, Father. It's hard not to get along."
Xiao Zhan's eyes widened at the statement, not sure whether to cry with laughter or to kill this elder brother of his lover. His lips twitched as he struggled to maintain his poker face.
Fuck. This is not good. This brat did this on purpose.
Lan Xichen seemed satisfied with the effect of his teasing. He knew exactly what he was doing, and he could see that the pair would made up even faster with his little joke. He just flashed a flowery smile to both Xiao Zhan and Lan Wangji who glared daggers at him.
Qingheng-Jun nodded slowly, seeming satisfied with that answer. "I'm glad to see that."
Xiao Zhan noticed the change of expression on Lan Wangji's face and the tight fists that formed under the table.
Yep. That's definitely jealousy.
He then turned away from him and looked back at Sect Leader Lan. "I think it's time for me to show how I could breach the barrier, Sect Leader Lan."
A short moment later, they all gathered in front of the entrance gate of Cloud Recesses. Xiao Zhan pulled out his Devil Scatter talisman and let it fly towards the barrier and butterflies made of flame-like lights emerged. They touched the barrier, and the invisible wall began burning through immediately, causing it to form a hole in the middle and Xiao Zhan walked in and out unobstructed to conclude his demonstration. It safe to say that everyone gasped when they saw how easy it was for him. After all, the array was quite formidable against most talismans.
Qingheng-Jun stepped forward, "Young Master Wei, you did excellent work. I am not surprised since I had seen your design. It was beyond doubt, more powerful than this barrier. And congratulations, you just breached my own array formation."
Huh?? He was the array master for this? No wonder he was so well-versed with arrays!
Xiao Zhan gave an apologetic smile and bowed politely, "Sect Leader Lan, I hope I didn't offend you in any way."
Qingheng-Jun waved off Xiao Zhan's comment, "There's nothing to be offended about, Young Master Wei. You showed us what is lacking in our current array system. We appreciate it greatly."
Xiao Zhan then spent the next hour implementing the upgrades onto the former Gusu Lan barrier, or in other words, replacing it with the new array system. It was a speedy process since he drew the same thing for several times now and didn't want to spend any longer than necessary on this. He would probably vomit blood if he had to draw this composition one more time. After finalizing the upgrade, he handed the blueprint and a manual book to Qingheng Jun, "Since this is a barrier for cloud recesses, only Gusu Lan member with a high priority hade token can access innermost later which contain the core fully. This restriction of access is only to ensure the highest level of safety. That being said, I will leave it to you, Sect Leader Lan on who will be responsible to supply it with power."
Qingheng-Jun nodded gently, "That's very considerate of you, Young Master Wei. Then, I'll oversee it myself. Thank you for your help."
Xiao Zhan bowed lightly and smiled, "It was my pleasure, Sect Leader Lan."
Qingheng-Jun moved to the core of the construction and poured his spiritual energy in it. A moment later, a new protective barrier began to take shape around the entire Cloud Recesses. The elders of Gusu Lan were all gathered at the center of the ring of powerful enchantment, busy on their own arrangements of delegation of duties for the maintenance of the structure.
Xiao Zhan sighed softly with relief as this exhausting day was finally coming to an end. All of the problems were solved except for the biggest problem in his life right now. He turned to look for Lan Wangji who was standing nearby quietly watching the whole ordeal unfold. Their gazes met; Lan Wangji's expression was calm yet expectant as he waited for Xiao Zhan to finish what he needed to do.
Xiao Zhan couldn't help but to walk over to his side and whispered to him, "We should talk after this is over."
Lan Wangji nodded in agreement before they continued to stand side by side without talking, just half-heartedly watching whatever the elders were doing. It wasn't until about half an hour later that their internal discussion concluded. The elders left together while Qingheng and Lan Xichen stayed behind.
Can we go now? Are we done here?
Qingheng-Jun expressed his gratitude another time, "Young Master Wei, on behalf of Gusu Lan, we sincerely thank you for your hard work and your kindness. If you ever require anything, please come find me."
Right now, I only require your permission to go and have a good talk with your son.
"It's really nothing much, Sect Leader Lan." Xiao Zhan responded modestly.
As if reading Xiao Zhan's mind, Qingheng-Jun spoke, "You did great things today, Young Master Wei. You must be exhausted after everything. Why don't you take a rest now?"
Xiao Zhan agreed readily, he said with a respectful gesture, "Then, I shall make my move, Sect Leader Lan."
"Ah, Young Master Wei, will you join us for breakfast tomorrow?" Qingheng-Jun asked with a smile.
There's no way I can reject his invitation twice in a row without making myself look like a rude person, right?
Xiao Zhan hesitated momentarily before replying, "Of course, Sect Leader Lan."
Without any more delay, Xiao Zhan made his exit. Lan Wangji stared fixed at Xiao Zhan's retreating figure before turning to his father, "Father, if there's nothing else, can I be excused?"
Qingheng-Jun nodded approvingly, "Go ahead, Wangji."
With that permission, Lan Wangji hurriedly caught up to his partner. Xiao Zhan could feel Lan Wangji's presence getting closer, and his pace slowed down. He glanced at Lan Wangji who was now right beside him as they walked side by side toward the direction of their usual spot.
Meanwhile, Qingheng-Jun turned to his eldest son after the duo disappeared together from his sight, he commented, "Wangji seemed to earn himself a close friend."
Lan Xichen responded with a smile, "Indeed, Father. A very close friend."

The water flowed peacefully past, carrying the sounds of birds chirping away from the top of the waterfall. The sky was cloudy and dark grayish blue, it felt like a heavy blanket covered the entire valley. When they finally reached their destination, they just stood there quietly, waiting for one another to start their conversation.
"Wei Ying, I'm sorry." Lan Wangji spoke first, his voice filled with regret as he pulled Xiao Zhan's hands in his. "Can you forgive me?"
Xiao Zhan gazed deeply into Lan Wangji's eyes, seeing the pure sincerity he was giving, "That depends on whether you still choose to proceed with your stupid plan or not."
"No, I won't." Lan Wangji said firmly.
"You're really unbelievable, Lan Zhan. And insane, fickle minded, stubborn-"
Xiao Zhan stopped talking abruptly when Lan Wangji leaned forward and softly brushed his lips against his own. They kissed softly, tenderly, lovingly until they were both breathless. The kiss broke slowly and ended after a few moments.
Xiao Zhan looked at Lan Wangji's face with lingering gaze, "Utterly ridiculous, shameless..."
"Mn." Lan Wangji simply murmured, pulling Xiao Zhan into his arms and holding him tightly.
"Irrational, completely unreasonable, rash, silly..." Xiao Zhan muttered against Lan Wangji's chest.
"Yes, I know." Lan Wangji murmured against his hair.
"...and stupid." Xiao Zhan concluded with a pout.
"Anything else?" Lan Wangji asked while stroking Xiao Zhan's hair.
"Can I say stubborn twice because you're so damn stubborn?" Xiao Zhan grumbled softly against his chest.
"You can say anything you want, as long as you forgive me, Wei Ying." Lan Wangji replied as he gently kissed his forehead.
With his hand caressing Lan Wangji's back, Xiao Zhan murmured, "Fine. You're forgiven."
"I love you." Lan Wangji admitted.
Xiao Zhan blinked, dumbfounded. "Huh?"
Lan Wangji stated determinedly. "I love you, Wei Ying."
Xiao Zhan already knew that but hearing it was different somehow. Hearing it being said out loud made it feel real and tangible. He soon found himself kissing Lan Wangji again and Lan Wangji was more than willing to reciprocate it fervently.
When they parted, both gasping heavily, Lan Wangji stared deeply into the beautiful silvery pair of eyes," Wei Ying, does this mean that you won't kick me?"
"So you were worried about that..." Xiao Zhan mumbled while steadying his breath. "Now I think I should kick you..."
"Wei Ying, you said it's domestic violence." Lan Wangji reminded him.
"Lan Zhan... Shut up."
Lan Wangji blinked at him with innocent eyes, "I just need to confirm because I think it will hurt."
"Lan Zhan, I can assure you that it will hurt if you continue with this nonsense, I swear!" Xiao Zhan protested, trying not to laugh
