A/N: This is a seriously long chapter. lol

Lan Wangji opened his eyes, putting an end to his meditation when he heard Xiao Zhan shifted in bed, the bedsheet rustled as the latter sat up. He purposely did not wake the man at their usual waking time since he knew that his lover was totally drained from last night's activities. His deep voice greeted the half-asleep lover of his as he spoke, "Good morning."
The first thing Xiao Zhan registered after waking up was just how soothing Lan Wangji's morning voice sounded, but the next thing he noticed was that he was still naked. Without sparing much thought, he picked up the white tunic that was folded neatly on the food board and tied the outerwear that belonged to Lan Wangji around his waist. His long hair hung freely over his shoulders and his back like a waterfall.
Lan Wangji felt a fond warmth bloom in his chest as he watched his lover moving around in his borrowed robes with sleepy motions. Appreciating how beautiful his partner was, he commented after some moments, "Wei Ying, you aware you're wearing my clothes, right?"
"Your clothes, my clothes... does it matter? As long as I'm not naked." Xiao Zhan replied sleepily and simply moved towards the table in the middle of the room while yawning, rubbing at his eye lazily with the back of his hand.
Lan Wangji stood up from the lotus sitting position and poured him the fragrant jasmine tea for him before moving to sit next to Xiao Zhan. He took a hold on his wrist as he passed some of his energy to him.
Xiao Zhan let out a blissful sigh and leaned into his side, taking a sip of the hot drink, "Hmm... Is this a morning after bribe?"
Lan Wangji smiled at his words and pressed a kiss to the top of his head. "Mn."
"I guess I can afford one now." Xiao Zhan mumbled with a small smile. They stayed like that for a good while until a soft knock on the door made them both turn their heads towards the door simultaneously.
Jiang Fengmian's voice came from outside the door, "A-Ying, are you up?"
"Ah, yes, Uncle Jiang." Xiao Zhan shot up from his seat in alarm.
Lan Wangji opened the door and stepped aside to let the older man in, bowing politely.
Jiang Fengmian returned the gesture with kind smile and took one look at his nephew before shaking his head amusedly. He asked, "Did you sleep well?"
Knowing that the elder was not really asking, Xiao Zhan flashed a humorless smile at him and mumbled, "The best sleep of my life, Uncle Jiang."
Jiang Fengmian laughed softly as he looked intently at what the young man was wearing, "That color suits you well, A-Ying. Although you might want to cover up a little more."
Xiao Zhan looked at himself and realized that the neckline was hanging as Lan Wangji's tunic was slightly too big on his frame. Part of his chiseled abdomen was in full display as well as some reddish marks that was on it. He hastily clutched the fabrics together in an attempt to cover up. When he heard Jiang Fengmian snickering, he looked away with a scowl as a red flush crept up from the roots of his hair to the tip of his ears.
The sect leader then turned his gaze onto Lan Wangji whose ears burned in reddish hue. It made him chuckle again and he said, "I presume my gift had been put to good use."
Both teenagers remain quiet, neither confirming nor denying his statement.
"Look at you, A-Ying. All grown up, through and through, eh?" Jiang Fengmian teased as he patted the youth on his back. "If you need more of the thing, just let me know."
"Nope. There's no need for more." Xiao Zhan shook his head vehemently, grabbing his cup of tea from the table and drank it all in one gulp.
"Ah, the sweet romance of youngsters." Jiang Fengmian remarked wistfully.
"Uncle Jiang, did you perhaps share reading materials with Shijie because it sounds like you've been reading too much romance novels recently." Xiao Zhan asked bluntly.
His uncle guffawed loudly at his statement and nodded his head, "It's a good bonding activity."
"Mm, sure, sure..." Xiao Zhan muttered sarcastically as he rolled his eyes.
Jiang Fengmian looked between them for a moment and before suggesting, "Why don't you to take a break for a couple of days before returning to Gusu? I am sure your adoptive father would be happy if you stay longer."
Xiao Zhan nodded slightly and replied, "I guess it's not a bad idea."
After a while talking about trivial matters, the elder cultivator smiled warmly at them and said, "Well, you two better enjoy your time now. I got to go now."
The Sect Leader of Yunmeng Jiang Clan turned towards Lan Wangji who stood beside Xiao Zhan, "I entrust my nephew to you again, Second Young Master Lan. "
Lan Wangji nodded politely with his usual calm expression but there was a glimmer of light in those eyes that indicate shyness, which seemed out of place on this stoic man of ice's appearance. His gaze shifted to Xiao Zhan who looked like he was ready to find a hole to jump into. He then turned his eyes towards Jiang Fengmian, "I will keep Wei Ying safe, Sect Leader Jiang."
"I have no doubt that you will." Jiang Fengmian replied warmly. He walked past the couple towards the exit of the room, "Try to get some rest a little more, A-Ying. You looked exhausted. And try not to finish up the entire thing too fast though."
Xiao Zhan could only bury his face in his palms as he heard the last sentence. He groaned helplessly, "Uncle Jiang, just stop..."
Jiang Fengmian chuckled good naturedly. "Alright, alright. I'll leave you two alone now. Take care of yourselves."
With that, he exited the room while laughing his heart out and left for Lotus Pier.
Lan Wangji was rendered speechless for a good while as he tried to digest the open-mindedness of the Sect Leader. He only snapped back to reality as he heard Xiao Zhan proclaimed"He's so embarrassing sometimes! "
He walked over and stroke his hair to sooth his lover while saying, "He means well."
Of course you will side with him. You're as shameless as he is!
A string of incoherent grumbling came as a reply afterwards.
"Do you want me to play 'Song of Clarity'?"
Xiao Zhan lifted up his face and sighed heavily before nodding slightly.
*****
Meanwhile, Sect Leader Nie was already carrying his duty as an understanding and kind foster father. Probably a little overindulgent as well, not that Xiao Zhan minded it. He insisted that the couple to stay a little longer to rest for a bit since the two youth would soon be swamped with heavy responsibilities afterwards and personally made arrangements for them to be left in peace. It was a nice gesture that both of them appreciated greatly. Hence, the couple stayed in Impure Realm for a couple more days, spending time together like it was their honeymoon before heading their way back to Gusu.
Before they knew it, it was soon time for the Yin and Yang pair to start their journey and it was still quite early in the morning when they stepped outside the gate of Impure Realm.
Xiao Zhan looked at Sect Leader Nie with a serious face as he spoke, "Father, if Wen Ruohan ever summon you to his place, please do not go."
Sect Leader Nie glanced sideways at his son with slight surprise at the request, "Why?"
"I can't tell you exactly why but trust me, it is best that you don't go there. That man's intention is never pure, and I do not want you to get hurt," Xiao Zhan said with a grim expression. He then added with an earnest look in his eyes. "Just don't go. Please."
Sect Leader Nie nodded after seeing the determination in his adoptive son's expression. "Alright. If that is what you think is best, I won't go."
Xiao Zhan visibly relaxed at those words. He sincerely that he could prevent the tragic end of his adoptive father this time around. After spending a week in Impure Realm, he somehow found that Sect Leader Nie was a great father figure despite his stern looking face and his strict attitude towards his subordinates. A warm and caring one which explained why Nie Mingjue turned into a bitter and resentful man when his father passed away in the original setting.
"Oh, and I will come along with the two of you." Nie Mingjue interjected suddenly, his hands clasped behind his back as he walked to stand right next to Xiao Zhan. His saber hung casually over his shoulders, looking very nonchalant despite saying such declaration.
The two teenagers turned their heads back to face him. They were confused. "Huh?"
"You're coming with us to Cloud Recesses?" Xiao Zhan asked, sounding somewhat upset at Nie Mingjue's decision.
Nie Mingjue shrugged casually and responded in an indifferent voice, "It will be the first time in forever since I've seen Huaisang. I need to see with my own eyes how much of the brat had improved."
Lan Wangji shot Nie Mingjue a disapproving glare, unhappy with the sudden participation of a third wheeler between them. However, he just took a deep breath to compose himself and held himself back from voicing any complaints.
The corners of Xiao Zhan's mouth twitched as he resisted the urge to facepalm. His gut instinct told him that it was going to be a long time until he was able to escape Nie Mingjue's presence. He tried his best not to show his internal screaming of frustration as he addressed Nie Mingjue once again in his best attempt of calm tone, "Da Ge, how long are you planning to stay for?"
"A week or two."
"That long?!" Xiao Zhan couldn't help to raise his voice a key higher in incredulity.
"Xichen did invite me to stay longer when he came to visit few months ago." Nie Mingjue replied, his tone as unbothered as ever and making Xiao Zhan feel like he needed to hit his head against a wall.
"Why didn't you tell us earlier?" Xiao Zhan asked through gritted teeth while forcing a smile on his face.
"I am telling you both now, am I not?" Nie Mingjue responded flatly as if Xiao Zhan's question was a ridiculous one.
Sect Leader Nie looked at the bantering brothers in front of him and a smile appeared on his lips. It was refreshing to see the two interacted with each other like real brothers. Especially when the younger one talked back to his eldest son despite the overbearing personality that Nie Mingjue exuded. Normally, no one would be courageous enough to converse with the tall and imposing youth without being cowed by his aura of authority and coldness. Apart from Lan Xichen, this adoptive son of his and his partner were the only ones who treated Nie Mingjue like a normal teen without feeling intimidated by his characteristics and Nie Mingjue seemed happy to receive that treatment from the duo.
He smiled fondly at the scene, a warmth radiating inside his chest from the sheer sight. He spoke up, "Alright, boys. Don't argue. I think it is best that Mingjue go to Cloud Recesses with you both. Just to be safe. Besides, it will be good for three of you to have proper conversation and bond."
Xiao Zhan's lips pursing as he tried to refrain from groaning loudly, running a hand through his hair. He couldn't possibly reject the notion coming from the elder after receiving his hospitable care. He took a deep breath before speaking once more, "As you wish, Father."
Sect Leader Nie smiled brightly at Xiao Zhan, a sense of pride blooming within him at hearing his youngest son agree on his suggestion so easily. He gave both of them a knowing smile before turning and started walking towards the entrance with a leisurely gait. "Be safe on the road then. I will see all of you again soon."
The three of them bowed simultaneously in response to Sect Leader Nie before returning the farewell as they turned around to continue their travels.
"Just keep up with us, Chifeng-Jun." Lan Wangji uttered with monotonous voice.
Nie Mingjue flashed them a grin with his white teeth glinting in the sunlight. "Sure. I am more than capable of taking care of myself."
"Let's just get a move on, shall we?" Xiao Zhan finally said in resignation.
Thanks to Nie Mingjue, the pair did not have the relaxing journey back that they hoped for. Sure, Xiao Zhan could talk endlessly about theories and even the most elaborate mathematical formulas to shut the older cultivator up. But even he himself got tired of hearing himself talk nonstop.
Not only that, but Lan Wangji had been silent ever since Nie Mingjue tagged along. It was also because of Lan Wangji's lack of response to his endless ramblings and was emitting a frosty aura that could freeze the sun itself, that Xiao Zhan was forced to make the journey less like a suffering and resorted to singing random songs to pass the time.
As per usual, Lan Wangji was completely entranced whenever he listened to the melodic voice that drifted out from Xiao Zhan's mouth. His ears became sensitive to every single note and melody his partner would sing. The sweet and mellow sound that reverberated throughout the air caused Lan Wangji to feel some type of pleasant sensation deep within his heart. His mood improved tremendously upon listening to the singing as they crossed the mountain path, a faint smile etched on his handsome features. For him, Xiao Zhan's voice itself was like music itself was music to his ears but when he was singing, it was a symphony with the same soulfulness that made everything else disappear in an instant. The beautiful and enchanting tunes made him forget all about his displeasure and focus solely on his lover.
Upon noticing this, Xiao Zhan happily slung his arms around the Second Jade's shoulder and continued to cheerfully sing as they continued to travel through the wilderness. It was effective to shut Nie Mingjue up as well. A win-win for all.
Meanwhile, Nie Mingjue kept throwing glances over the pair, trying to discern whether Xiao Zhan was just playing around or really possessed talent in that area as well. However, the more he listened to the dulcet tones drifting out from the young teenager's lips, the more he realized just how captivating Xiao Zhan's vocals could truly be. Even he himself was not immune to its charm.
When the sun began to set down the horizon, they paused their journey and headed towards an inn at the nearest town to allow themselves to rest.
"Three rooms please." Nie Mingjue told the innkeeper as soon as they arrived.
"My apologies, Young Masters. We only have two rooms left." She informed them apologetically.
"We'll take the rooms." Lan Wangji immediately spoke. He turned to Nie Mingjue and stated without a second of hesitation, "Wei Ying and I will share."
Xiao Zhan couldn't help the grin that appeared on his lips as he nodded as well, "Yeah, let me share with Lan Zhan. You can have the other room to yourself, Da Ge."
"...Suit yourself," Nie Mingjue replied. The reason was obvious. He knew full well that it wouldn't do any good to interfere with a couple's love life. Even though he would occasionally frown over their close proximity or their blatant display of affection toward each other, he never brought it up either. He was a young adult after all and although he was not interested in relationship himself, he understood that love was an important affair for most people of their age. Therefore, he respected them both for it even if they were both clearly of the same gender. It wasn't unheard of, and it wasn't really his place to interfere anyway.
"Oh! Of course, Young Masters." The innkeeper hastily agreed. "We have restaurant adjoined to this inn if you gentlemen would like anything to eat. The spicy beef noodle meal is excellent here."
Xiao Zhan's eyes sparkled upon hearing those words and said excitedly, "Let us eat there then."
Nie Mingjue tapped his fingers on the table as he observed Xiao Zhan ordered a bunch of dishes to eat, noting how there were two stark contrasts in the meals he picked. Lan Wangji just silently watched the other man with tender eyes.
"Oh, Mister. Please make the noodles extra spicy, please." Xiao Zhan as he finished ordering. He then asked Nie Mingjue, "Da Ge, what do you want to eat?"
Nie Mingjue took a quick glance at the menu that was handed over to him before quickly choosing his own. He then asked, "How about Second Young Master Lan?"
"I already ordered for him." Xiao Zhan said plainly. Lan Wangji simply nodded as acknowledgement. He was happy to eat whatever it is that his beloved picked for him.
When the food was set down, it was discernable that Xiao Zhan really loved his food spicy. The chili peppers were literally swimming in his bowl, the bowl of noodle gave off a spicy aroma that lingered in the air and assaulted Nie Mingjue's nostrils.
He felt a tinge of pain coming to his nose which caused him to grimace, "How are you going to eat with that much pepper?"
Xiao Zhan glanced over at Nie Mingjue with a smirk, and he answered with a challenging tone, "This isn't much. Do you want to have a taste, Da Ge?"
Nie Mingjue raised his brow at the audacious question. He was never a person who would ignore any challenge coming his way.
He slowly put down his spoon and grabbed the bowl and chopsticks Xiao Zhan passed him with a wide grin plastered all over his face and a mischievous glint in his eyes.
After all, it is just spicy food, right? At least that's what he thought before he courageously shoved a portion of the extra spicy beef noodle soup into his mouth. It was hot enough to melt the inside of his mouth. He had never thought that eating spicy food would be such an agonizing experience as his entire face rapidly reddening and he fought the urge not to shed any tears. He pushed the bowl back to Xiao Zhan who was watching his reaction closely with a smug expression on his face. He scowled, "You're not human."
Xiao Zhan's expression did not falter as he replied with a slight chuckle, "I heard that plenty of times."
He then took his own bite and ate. "Mmmm, so good."
Nie Mingjue stared at him in disbelief while he was still struggling to comprehend what he was experiencing as his cheeks still ached with the pain of being roasted alive by Xiao Zhan's food. How can anyone eat that stuff.
Lan Wangji shook his head at his lover's prank. He knew exactly how it felt to be on the receiving end; he too suffered from it once. He reached over to pour Nie Mingjue a cup of water before pushing it towards him, a gesture out of sympathy, "Here, drink this, Chifeng-jun."
"Thanks." Nie Mingjue muttered as he accepted the cup gratefully while watching Xiao Zhan ate the dish which he was sure was made of hell fire with gusto. It didn't take long before Xiao Zhan managed to demolish every last bit.
After that dinner, they retired to their respective rooms. Xiao Zhan did not forget to put on a sound blocking talisman as he entered the room with Lan Wangji. After all, he could be pretty loud sometimes. He was a vocalist after all. As expected, Lan Wangji didn't let him sleep before making love to him as soon as they laid under their quilt. Xiao Zhan, however, did not resist his advances and he willingly let his beloved ravage him. They slept with their limbs tangled around each other afterwards.
The rest of the three days of travel passed without a hitch and the tensed air around the trio was eased up considerably as the time passed. The scenery around them was changing from desolate lands and harsh mountain ranges into lush green forests and plains with rolling mountains covered in dense greenery that looked like a piece of art itself.
Finally, they reached the territory of Gusu Lan Sect and Lan Xichen was the first one they saw at the gate. He walked toward them briskly, wearing a broad convivial smile and his voice was filled with excitement as he exclaimed, "Wangji! Young Master Wei! Welcome back! I missed you both!"
Xiao Zhan smiled upon seeing the enthusiastic welcoming, "Good to see you healthy, Zewu-jun."
Lan Wangji's lips lifted slightly upwards as well at his older brother's greeting, "Brother, I hope you're doing well."
Lan Xichen raised his brows in surprise at the faint smile on his younger brother's face. It was a rare sight for the usually taciturn Lan Wangji to smile at him. His eyes glinted warmly as he reached out his hand to give the younger man a hug. Lan Wangji stiffened a bit at the sudden contact, yet he allowed his brother to embrace him for exactly three second before stepping away.
"Ah, still as cold as ever!" Lan Xichen laughed at his younger brother's action. He teased, "How come you're only warm to Young Master Wei?"
"..." Lan Wangji didn't reply to his teasing.
"Hahaha! I'm happy to see you too, Wangji!" Lan Xichen responded chirpily before turning to greet the taller man behind the couple and bowed politely to him, "Oh, Mingjue-Xiong is here as well. Welcome! You're finally come to pay a visit! What brings you to Gusu?"
Nie Mingjue inclined his head towards Lan Xichen to return his greeting, "It's good to see you again, Xichen. I just want to check on Huaisang's progress."
"Ah, yes. Of course. Please come in." Lan Xichen said brightly as he turned to lead the way.
"Wei Ying, do you want to rest first?" Lan Wangji asked as he moved closer to Xiao Zhan and wrapped an arm around his shoulder protectively as a habit.
"No. I'm not tired." Xiao Zhan shook his head lightly.
Lan Xichen's heart warmed at the sight as he took a glance at his little brother, who looked completely content to be by Xiao Zhan's side. His favorite pair is back.
As they headed inside, Xiao Zhan caught sight of Qingheng-Jun just outside the main hall.
"Welcome back you two," Qingheng Jun smiled benevolently as the trio bowed to him respectfully. He then spoke to Nie Mingjue, "Young Master Nie, it has been such a long time since we've met, and you have grown quite tall. How is your father doing these days?"
"Father is well. In fact, he's pretty happy." Nie Mingjue replied.
"What a coincidence. So am I." Qingheng Jun responded as he glances upon the duo. "Oh...Is there anything good that happened recently?"
"Yes, this is the good thing that happened." Nie Mingjue said as he patted Xiao Zhan's shoulder proudly. "This boy here is my brother now."
Lan Xichen looked between Nie Mingjue and Xiao Zhan. Then, he looked over his younger brother whose golden irises were fixated at Nie Mingjue's hand that was still on Xiao Zhan's shoulder.
Xiao Zhan removed Nie Mingjue's hand that instance and spoke and with a sigh, "Yes, that happened."
Qingheng Jun stared at Xiao Zhan in surprise, "That's quite unexpected."
"Yes, I didn't expect it either." Xiao Zhan nodded in agreement with Qingheng Jun's statement.
"Well then, should we move to my study where we can discuss further about the matter?" Qingheng Jun suggested after a brief pause.
All of them nodded their heads and followed after the esteemed leader.
*****
Xiao Zhan recounted what transpired during their excursion in Qinghe and let him in the loop of the information that he already shared out with both his adoptive father and his uncle.
When he finished, Qingheng-Jun and Lan Xichen sat in silence for a few minutes, deep in thought.
Qingheng-Jun broke the silence after a few moments, "If that is really the case, it seems like the situation is dire. How about the other sects? Shouldn't we notify them so they will know what to prepare in advance and get their aids as well?"
"For the time being, it's better if this information stays under wraps, Qingheng-Jun." Xiao Zhan stated softly. "Honestly, I do not trust the other sects with the knowledge."
"You may be right about that." Qingheng Jun nodded. "Then, tell me, Young Master Wei. What can our clan do to help? What do you suggest?"
The two men looked expectantly for Xiao Zhan to answer. Xiao Zhan exchanged glances with Lan Wangji before speaking, "First, we need to keep this secret for now. The lesser that knows, the better. Secondly, I think it's better if you meet up with my uncle and father in one of these days, Qingheng-Jun. But before that, I will elaborate what is the current plan of action."
The duo then made their presentation in the same manner that they did in Qinghe. Bypassing any unnecessary words or embellishments; they focused on facts and logic instead. After they were finished, both of them were left stunned a little bit. They certainly weren't prepared of that level of military strategy and tact but knowing the two teenagers were both geniuses, it wasn't that surprising. Nevertheless, it was still quite astounding and impressive.
While Nie Mingjue was busy trying to process the new info the couple just presented them with, Lan Xichen commented about their past interactions.
"So, the prophetic dream you two had was truly a warning."
"What prophetic dream?" Qingheng-Jun asked curiously.
Before Xiao Zhan could reply, Lan Wangji beat him to the punch, saying, "Father, I will tell you about that later. It's not appropriate for us to talk about such matters now."
Qingheng-Jun glanced at him in concern for a brief moment before nodding understandingly.
"Alright," He acquiesced easily, "Let's talk about it another time then. Shall I hear the night hunt reports from you after this, Wangji?"
"Yes, Father." Lan Wangji nodded obediently.
Taking the cue, Lan Xichen raised from his seat, "Father, may I be excused? I will bring Mingjue-Xiong to see Huaisang, and I think Young Master Wei might want to check on his former trainees as well.
"Alright. Go ahead." Qingheng-Jun said. He then turned to Xiao Zhan and with a gentle smile on his face, he asked, "Young Master Wei, let's have breakfast together tomorrow."
"Yes, Qingheng-Jun." Xiao Zhan replied respectfully. He stole a quick glance to see Lan Wangji nodded at him before leaving the room together with the other two.
Nie Mingjue raised his brow, amused by their interactions. Seemed like this young lad is really favored by Sect Leader Lan, he thought to himself.
As soon as they were out of hearing distance of those in the room, Lan Xichen couldn't hold his laughter anymore, "Young Master Wei, you really have talent in making people swoon over you."
Xiao Zhan rolled his eyes, "Yeah, yeah."
"Wangji is getting better looking now. Don't you agree, Young Master Wei?" Lan Xichen asked playfully. Of course, Lan Xichen is Lan Xichen indeed. The unabashed and relentless teaser would never let an opportunity to make Xiao Zhan flustered with his droll sense of humor. "He looks more radiant like something good has happened to him."
Xiao Zhan blushed in embarrassment as he thought about the nights they spent together. He cleared his throat awkwardly as he spoke, "He's always handsome."
Lan Xichen narrowed his eyes suspiciously at Xiao Zhan's response and chuckled, "I wonder what caused such a happy change?"
Xiao Zhan quickly changed the subject before Lan Xichen could inquire further about it. "How were things going with the boys?"
Lan Xichen gave him a wide grin before replying jovially, "Oh, they were absolutely delightful!"
Xiao Zhan raised an eyebrow, "I guess you had gotten used to training them, Zewu-Jun?"
Lan Xichen nodded, "Indeed, indeed. Huaisang is already the top amongst our group of trainees. That boy is quite impressive."
Xiao Zhan hummed noncommittally. A small smirk appeared on his lips as he started walking towards the training ground.
"Now that the fierce brother of mine is not guarding you, let's see your former trainees, shall we?" Lan Xichen said, clapping his hands together gleefully. He turned to Nie Mingjue, "Mingjue-Xiong, you should see Huaisang in action!"
It was chaotic. Everyone was bustling around as soon as Xiao Zhan walked in. They rushed up to greet him frantically. "Welcome back, Young Master Wei!"
Xiao Zhan raised his brow slightly at how excited everyone was but didn't mind.
"A smiling demon?" Xiao Zhan echoed, turning to look at Lan Xichen. He then laughed out loud when he heard the nickname the disciples came up for the First Jade and commented, "It suits him. Very much."
Lan Xichen lifted his shoulders in an airy shrug.
Jiang Cheng walked over towards him, "You look pretty well."
Xiao Zhan smirked, "Good to see you too, Jiang Cheng. Did you miss me a lot?"
Jiang Cheng rolled his eyes and huffed, "In your dreams."
"Well, I did miss your cute eye rolls." Xiao Zhan retorted lightly with a cheeky grin.
Jiang Cheng immediately scowled, "Cut the crap!"
Nie Huaisang just entered the field and ran up to them. He stopped in his track and hurriedly dashed to hide behind Jiang Cheng as he spotted his elder brother. He timidly greeted Nie Mingjue from where he stood, "Da Ge, you're here too?"
"Uh huh." Nie Mingjue grunted, eyeing Huaisang menacingly past Jiang Cheng's shoulder.
"Hey brat, stop hiding behind me. You can't run anymore!" Nie Huaisang was immediately shoved aside by Jiang Cheng who was intimidated by the brawny elder brother of his friend.
"Jiang Cheng!" Huaisang whined as he stumbled slightly, "You're supposed to be my best friend."
"Shut up." Jiang Cheng grumbled, "And who's your best friend!"
"So mean!" Nie Huaisang pouted, clutching his chest dramatically. He then threatened playfully, "Since you said we're not, I'm going to report your misdemeanors! All of it!"
"I'll report you too! Try me!" Jiang Cheng challenged with a sneer.
"Fine! Then let's get punished together!" Nie Huaisang declared.
"Fine by me!" Jiang Cheng scoffed.
Xiao Zhan snapped his fingers; his petrification spell took an immediate effect and the two boys instantly frozen solid in their repartee. He simply stated with impassive face, "You two asked for a punishment. So, there you go."
Both men tried wiggling their wrists to loosen their muscles but found nothing. Both boys groaned loudly as they realized they couldn't move or even speak. They tried to dispel it but alas it was no use for Xiao Zhan's spell work was far superior than theirs and they simply ended up being rendered immobile.
Nie Mingjue knitted his brows close together as he glanced at Xiao Zhan who was acting nonchalant while looking at the two boys in apathetic manner. He chose not to say anything for the moment though out of respect of Xiao Zhan's status as a respected figure in Gusu Lan despite the fact that he was the older one.
Lan Xichen snorted softly from where he was standing, unable to stop himself from smiling, "The original demon trainer is back."
Other disciples felt goosebumps creep all over their skin upon hearing what Lan Xichen said. They just remembered how truly ruthless their former trainer was once he was pissed off and their blood went cold at the mere memory.
Xiao Zhan spoke up, "You don't mind that I punished them right, Zewu-Jun?"
Lan Xichen nodded amusedly in agreement and said teasingly, "Absolutely not. You sure have a great way to deal with things, Young Master Wei."
Everyone stared at both of them, and their expressions were priceless to see. Lan Xichen's face lit up like Christmas tree, "Young Master Wei, are you taking ba-"
"Zewu-Jun, you're still in charge." Xiao Zhan cut him off curtly.
Lan Xichen sighed defeatedly, feigning tears, "How can you be so cruel to me, Young Master Wei?"
"Is my surname Lan, Zewu-Jun? How would I dare to steal your assigned duty from you?" Xiao Zhan responded bluntly.
"You will be one of us eventually, Young Master Wei, so why not start early." Lan Xichen suggested cheekily.
"..." Xiao Zhan glared at him, causing Lan Xichen to chuckle lightly.
"You're really like Wangji sometimes."
"..."
"Hahaha! Uncanny resemblance!"
Xiao Zhan just ignored the first Jade in the same manner of Lan Wangji, which earned him another bouts of stifled laughter.
The spell wore off at exactly one minute and thirty seconds after Xiao Zhan casted it.
Nie Huaisang immediately scrambled to keep his balance while trying his very best to act normal. Jiang Cheng also followed suit after having regained some movement.
Nie Mingjue frowned at Nie Huaisang, "What a scene you made, Huaisang!"
Nie Huaisang pouted sheepishly as he cowered, "Sorry, Da Ge."
Nie Mingjue looked back at Xiao Zhan and commented, "This brat still as cowardly as ever? I thought you said that he would be much stronger than this."
Xiao Zhan pointed out, "Da Ge, who wouldn't run if you look like you're going to hit him?"
"Da Ge?" Nie Huaisang blinked, puzzled. "Why are you calling my Da Ge, 'Da Ge'?"
Xiao Zhan paused for a second. He then looked at Nie Huaisang before replying in a firm manner, "I will tell you later. In private."
"Huh?" Nie Huaisang tilted his head confused, still trying to comprehend his words.
Before any further conversation could be made, Xiao Zhan turned to Lan Xichen and asked, "Do you mind, Zewu-Jun?"
"Not at all. Do as you please, Young Master Wei." Lan Xichen approved straightforwardly.
Xiao Zhan stepped to the center where his older formation array was laid out in front of him, making a quick adjustment here and there. Both of the older males observed his nimble movement closely, trying to make sense of what he was doing.
After about fifteen minutes, Xiao Zhan finally finished adjusting everything into place and then waved his hand, saying with a satisfied expression, "Okay! I'm done. Let's test this new terrain out!"
"New terrain?!" The disciples chorused in surprise.
Xiao Zhan nodded in affirmation, "Yeah, this is an entirely different formation that you have to deal with. So, try and adapt to it as fast as you all can."
The disciples couldn't help but wonder if Xiao Zhan had gone mad, but seeing as how he still managed to keep a straight face even though the ground beneath his feet shook every now and then, they weren't entirely sure if he was sane at the first place.
"What? Don't you all know me already? It's time to level things up." Xiao Zhan said when he saw all of them looking at him like he was in fact, crazy.
As Xiao Zhan poured his spiritual energy into the formation and chanting wordlessly, the array began activating into its new configuration in no time at all. The array started to glow brightly, casting its light over every corner of the magical circle and extending past it forming a gigantic dome. The ground seemed to disappear and the area became an open space surrounded by trees. The area also had a few tall grassy hills that were covered by a thick canopy of trees. There were various plants and shrubs scattered about, along with many large boulders. It was an imitation of one of many routes towards Nightless City. Xiao Zhan took the inspiration from the Hunger Games when he built up the entire layout.
Lan Xichen sighed, "I really wish I can do that too."
Nie Mingjue now more convinced that his adoptive brother was perfect addition to their sect. The spiritual power he possessed seemed to be abundant and the control he had over them was impeccable. If he hadn't personally witnessed Xiao Zhan's display during the night hunt, he probably wouldn't believe his own eyes. But he didn't voice his opinion aloud. Instead, he nodded thoughtfully and silently agreeing with Lan Xichen.
Xiao Zhan clapped his hands as he spoke loudly with austere expression, "Okay, boys. Let's see how well you all did without me."
The disciples' eyes widened in a mixture of shock, amazement, and confusion. The entire field went silent, the only sound being their heart beats as their heads turning in all directions like meerkats as their eyes darted around the new landscape, taking in the changes.
"What are you all standing there for?! The battle had begun!" Xiao Zhan yelled at them sternly.
Xiao Zhan's voice in his trainer mode could easily make every one of them to tremble anxiously. In spite of that, they still had a lot of respect towards him. Even Nie Mingjue was impressed when Xiao Zhan's tone suddenly changed.
At once, the men came back to themselves. As Xiao Zhan's instructions rang in their ears, they began to divide themselves into two groups as they usually did. Nie Huaisang's team on one end versus Jiang Cheng's team on the other.
Nie Huaisang shed his timid exterior as soon as he had placed himself in position and faced the opponents. It wasn't long until the two sides clashed together and the fight started. Both ends used different tactics to engage and defend against each other.
Despite the newer terrain, Nie Huaisang seemed to adapt fast and directed his team through the terrain seamlessly. As if noticing the gaze directed at him from the other end of the battlefield, Nie Huaisang's head jerked toward Jiang Cheng's direction and gave him a sly wink grinning widely at him like the absolute devil he is, which just annoyed the shit out of the cranky guy.
Jiang Cheng rolled his eyes and continued to focus on the battle. He refused to look again.
Xiao Zhan stood atop of a tall boulder while he gazed down at the ground below him, watching everyone battling around him. He put all his focus on observing each and every one, gauging their individual improvement since he had left.
"Hmm? Interesting." he murmured to himself as he observed Nie Huaisang's tactical arrangements, analyzing the formation carefully. The cunning youth was using the surrounding to his advantage. He didn't hesitate to put the weakest fighters in his team to the front line, making his team looked a little disorderly and panicky. As the group fled across the field in a haphazard formation, Jiang Cheng's team lowered their guard and chased after them. Little that they know, the weaklings were just baits to lure them into corners where the strongest ones were positioned stealthily, hidden from view with some bushes or tall grass to ambushed his opponent when they least expect it.
"Huaisang will win this round. Don't you agree?" His gaze then shifted toward Lan Wangji when he heard the latter's footsteps coming closer, but then resumed his focus on the battle.
"Mn." Lan Wangji agreed. He too directed his eyes to observe l the battle intensely. It was like they both were back to their old routine.
Nie Mingjue and Lan Xichen stayed rooted in their spots as they watched the mock battle, occasionally glancing sideways to admire the Yin and Yang pair in their serious trainer forms.
As the battle progressed, Nie Mingjue was pleasantly surprised to see his little brother leading his team with confidence and skill. The younger male was clearly much more serious than he'd previously assumed he would be. In fact, he looked more mature. Noticing that Nie Huaisang seemed to have taken on a much more commanding stance after he as leader of his team, a faint smile tugged at Nie Mingjue's lips unconsciously. It seemed that duo hadn't exaggerated after all, that little brother of his had grown so much since he'd last seen him. The little brat had more spunk now.
A few hours passed and the sun were casting its warm golden hue when finally, Nie Huaisang emerged from the forest triumphantly. He had successfully cornered everyone of the opposing team main force to the edge of the forest and ambushed them from behind. All in all, both sides had shown their hand. Jiang Cheng was not doing bad either as he did caught up to Nie Huaisang's strategies in the midst of the chaos and tried to turn the table around. However, Nie Huaisang always had plan B and plan C in mind which was why he always was the winner in these kind of fight.
Xiao Zhan then gave his feedbacks on the disciples' performance in straightforward manner which everyone had anticipated. Although he did end it by commending everyone's efforts and the rest of the disciples left the training ground in good spirits.
When everyone was dismissed, Nie Huaisang smiled victoriously as he ran towards Xiao Zhan with full intention to hug him, "Wei-Xiong ~! Am I not the best?"
His steps screeched in an abrupt halt as he noticed the second Jade fierce eyes trained on him intensely in a blaring warning. He cleared his throat and stick close to his elder brother who frowned at his reaction.
"Lan Zhan, will you relax a little?" Xiao Zhan said in hushed tone while keeping a hand on his upper back.
Lan Wangji gave a slight nod of assent. His expression changed from a ferocious snow lion to a gentle, docile puppy within a flash.
He turned to Nie Huaisang with an apologetic expression, "You did well today."
"Of course! But I must admit, that terrain of yours was truly a masterpiece." Nie Huaisang commented with lighthearted tone.
"Huaisang, you've improved greatly," Nie Mingjue praised sincerely. He looked at Nie Huaisang with pride, "I never thought you possessed the talent to learn to command and lead."
Nie Huaisang was esctatic to receive the compliment from his strict big brother and said chirpily, "Da Ge, you flatter me."
Nie Mingjue's eyes softened a little as he stated, "You did a good job."
"Thank you, Da Ge," Nie Huaisang responded happily.
In the meantime, Jiang Cheng who already got over his loss, walked towards Xiao Zhan as he noticed something. He looked up close at his martial brother to confirm his suspicion before asking bluntly, "What is that on your neck?"
Before Xiao Zhan could respond, Nie Huaisang's eyes shone with excitement as he too leaned over to take a closer look. When he saw what it was, he let out a gasp involuntarily, "That... looks a lot like a hickey."
Ah shit! Why is this thing take too long to dissapear! Even healing potion did nothing! I need to create a bandaid or concealer next.
Xiao Zhan covered his neck with his hands, "It's mosquito's bite!"
Lan Wangji tried not to react and averted his eyes when Xiao Zhan shot a sharp glare in his direction.
Lan Xichen caught the guilty look in his face and chuckled, shaking his head in amusement, "It must be one persistent mosquito then."
"What mosquito? I didn't see a single one during the journey?" Nie Mingjue questioned innocently. Then again, he was never interested in relationship and he didn't even know what hickey means.
Lan Xichen tried his best to suppressed the laughter that brewing in his chest at hearing the naiveté of Nie Mingjue's remark, shaking his head and saying, "It's a clingy one that stuck exclusively to one person."
Lan Wangji glared daggers at his elder brother without a word which made Lan Xichen burst into a hearty laugh.
Xiao Zhan's face flushed crimson. He immediately shot a murderous look in Lan Xichen's direction and scowled, "I think it's about time we have a duel, Zewu-jun. "
Lan Xichen stopped laughing almost instantly. He held up his hands defensively, hoping to pacify the younger man. "Ah, Young Master Wei. I am just joking."
"I am not." Xiao Zhan said in a deadpan expression.
"Aren't you tired from the journey?" Lan Xichen replied nervously.
"Nope. Not at all. I still have plenty of energy to fight." he responded stubbornly, narrowing his eyes at Lan Xichen.
Lan Xichen immediately switched tactic, "Oh, look at the time. It's almost dinner time."
"Oh Zewu-Jun, I only need maybe one incense stick of your time." Xiao Zhan countered.
Lan Xichen turned to his younger brother, "Wangji, how about escorting Young Master Wei to rest? He looks exhausted."
"Wei Ying said he's not." Lan Wangji replied stoically. He was not in the mood to help his brother out of his lover's wrath this time.
Lan Xichen sighed helplessly, "Let's fight another day, Young Master Wei. Okay? I have an important task to do now."
"Come on, Mingjue-Xiong. I'll show you to your room." He quickly added before he sashayed away gracefully, taking Nie Mingjue with him as insurance.
Xiao Zhan grumbled in annoyance as he watched the retreating figures disappeared in the distance.
Nie Huaisang then brought his attention back as he posed the question, he had been dying to know the answer, "Wei-Xiong, why are you calling my brother, 'Da Ge'?"
Jiang Cheng was curious about the honorific too. He couldn't help but raise a brow in curiosity. "Yeah, what's that all about?"
Xiao Zhan took a deep breath and closed his eyes. He counted to ten in order to calm himself. After several seconds, he opened his eyes with determination and stated decisively, "Let's go to my room to talk."
As soon as they arrived in the room, he told the two teens about what happened.
"What did you say?" Jiang Cheng exclaimed disbelievingly, staring at Xiao Zhan with incredulous look.
"You are my brother now?" Nie Huaisang exclaimed, he was obviously excited beyond belief.
"Well... Yes." Xiao Zhan rubbed his temple tiredly. He then sighed before adding, "Uncle Jiang and your father, I mean our father are sworn brothers too."
"What?!" Both Jiang Cheng and Nie Huaisang uttered loudly together. They stared at Xiao Zhan with widened eyes and their jaws dropped.
"This is supposed to be a secret. So, in the meantime, try to act like normal." Xiao Zhan instructed.
The two boys was silent for a couple of minutes before Nie Huaisang broke into a laughing fit. "That sounds like the funniest thing I've ever heard!"
Jiang Cheng glowered at Nie Huaisang with his arms crossed across his chest, "How is it funny?"
Nie Huaisang's eyes darted in between Xiao Zhan and Jiang Cheng while he cackled. When he finally managed to stop, he stated, "You two. Call me Er Ge now."
Jiang Cheng rolled his eyes before he retorted sarcastically, "No fucking way!"
Xiao Zhan had the same reaction with Jiang Cheng, "Hell no!"
Nie Huaisang fanned himself and stood smugly, "Rude brats. I am older than you both."
I am way older than you! Spiritually that is.
"Whatever." Xiao Zhan muttered irritably.
Nie Huaisang was still giggling lightly while Jiang Cheng was frowning and shooting deadly glares towards Nie Huaisang, "Well, I don't mind being rude."
"Come on guys. Let me hear you call me Er Ge. Or Ge Ge would suffice."
"Fuck off." Both boys yelled simultaneously. Nie Huaisang didn't get discouraged and made it his mission to hear the other two to call him in that term of endearment. The trio started to banter with each other and at one point, Nie Huaisang started chasing Jiang Cheng around who shouted of protest.
Xiao Zhan pinched the bridge of his nose exasperatedly, "You two sure are annoying."
Nie Huaisang then turned to Xiao Zhan, attempting to bear hug him, "Give me a hug, little bro."
Before Xiao Zhan knew what was happening his arm had already been grabbed, and he was pulled against a warm body with surprising strength and ferocity, enveloped in a protection of the Second Jade.
Lan Wangji's eyes flashed dangerously ans his voice was ice cold, "Don't push your luck, Nie Huaisang. Brother or not, don't touch Wei Ying simply."
Nie Huaisang clicked his tongue in disappointment and pouted childishly, "But he is my little brother."
Jiang Cheng snorted mockingly, "Little? Aren't you the shortest among us?"
"Hey, height does not matter. In any case, I am older than the two of you." Nie Huaisang replied pompously. He then pointed at Jiang Cheng and added, "Also, you are the youngest here. So, you better treat me with respect!"
Jiang Cheng was taken aback by his boldness as he glared menacingly at Nie Huaisang. "I rather eat my foot."
"Didi, you should help you elder brother here! Make him eat his foot!" Nie Huaisang said to Xiao Zhan.
"I'm gonna beat the crap out of you!" Jiang Cheng snarled.
"Give it your best shot!" Nie Huaisang countered, shouting as he stood beside Xiao Zhan who was still imprisoned in Lan Wangji's back hug.
At this juncture, Xiao Zhan couldn't stand the squabbling any longer, "Shut up both of you!"
The two immediately forced to shut up with the silence spell that Lan Wangji casted. They snapped their head to look at Lan Wangji only to be glared down with an icy cold gaze.
Xiao Zhan turned his head to look at Lan Wangji and smiled sweetly at him as his gratitude. "Thank you, Lan Zhan. Let me handle these brats."
Lan Wangji nodded before loosening his grip on him.
"Now now, don't make things difficult for yourselves." Xiao Zhan said smilingly as Lan Wangji released him from his hold. He then pushed the two boys towards the door, "I am exhausted and I have zero tolerance to bullshit at the moment. So, goodbye now."
The two gestured their protests wildly before Xiao Zhan added another threat, "Don't make me petrify you both again."
It was very effective and the two started to turn around and walk away.
"Oh, and Jiang Cheng." Xiao Zhan called out after they took a few steps. Jiang Cheng snapped his head to glare at him with a clear 'what the fuck do you want now?' written all over his face.
"That annoying brat happened to be my elder brother now. So, if you really try to beat the crap out of him, I might have to beat the crap out of you." Xiao Zhan stated offhandedly.
Jiang Cheng rolled his eyes skyward at that remark and threw his hands in the air in frustration while Nie Huaisang smirked in satisfaction.
Xiao Zhan then shut the door before returning to his spot next to Lan Wangji.
