This made Nathan feel uneasy.
He checked the entire ward to see if his son had hidden any more unusual books.
Fortunately, there were no additional books of that kind.
It appeared that Colby had only read this one.
âDaddy, is something wrong? Why do you look so worried?â
Nathan sat back down on the edge of the bed and gently caressed his sonâs soft face to reassure him.
âMy good boy, at five years old, you should enjoy more childrenâs books.
How about I buy you a colorful set of fairy tale books? And we can save the math and foreign Language books for when youâre older, okay?â
âThe fairy tale books are so childish.
Destinee might like them, but I donât.
Daddy, are you trying to take away the only hobby I enjoy?â Colby frowned, clearly unhappy.
Nathan was momentarily lost for words.
His fingers stopped mid-stroke as he touched his sonâs face.
Struck silent, he was distressed by the disappointed look in Colbyâs eyes.
âI didnât mean thatâ¦â
Looking down, Colby questioned, âDaddy, do you think Iâm a weirdo? Iâm not like a normal kid at all.
â
âNo, I donât think that,â Nathan responded firmly.
âYour mommy and I have never thought that.
I will always protect you, Destinee, your mommy, and our family.
â
Perhaps it was the pleading look in his sonâs eyes that made Nathan feel guilty as if he had failed him.
Unable to meet Colbyâs gaze, he looked away and shifted the conversation.
âColby, I have some work to attend to.
I need to step out for a short while, no more than ten minutes.
Iâll come back soon and we can work on your favorite math problems together, okay?â
Colby nodded and replied, âOkay, Iâll wait for you, Daddy.

Nathan left Colbyâs ward with the book âPathological Psychologyâ in hand and headed straight to Aldric.
âWhatâs going on, Nathan? You look so serious.
â
Nathan handed the book over and asked, âDid you find this book for Colby?â
Aldric flipped through the pages nonchalantly, his expression skeptical.
âColbyâs so young.
How could he grasp this kind of material? I wouldnât give him something so inappropriate.
â
Noticing Nathanâs skeptical look, Aldric reassured him, âI didnât give it to him.
He mentioned that he was bored during his infusions, so I found him some comics to pass the time.
â
Seeing Nathan still deep in thought, Aldric asked gently, âNathan, are there any lingering doubts on your mind?â
Nathanâs gaze remained fixed on the book cover, his thoughts drifting back to the unsettling conversation he had with Colby in the ward.
âColby said a doctor from the lab gave this to him.
So, Iâm here to ask you about it.
You are the one who interacts with Colby the most.
If it wasnât you, then who else in the lab frequently interacts with him?â
