I sit next to Ethan, watching Liora work through each line of the contract with surgical precision, crossing out words and rephrasing clauses. Nina types away on her laptop, fixing five typos that I couldnât help but smirk at every time she found one. With each correction, Ethanâs ego deflates like a popped balloon, making him sink further into the couch next to me. Oh, and heâs such an angry grumbler.
âLook at you, getting your ass handed to you,â I tease, raising my beer in a mock salute.
Ethan grunts, clearly not in the mood for my jokes. He takes a long sip from his beer. âIâve had a long day. All I want is to go home.â
âTo your cats?â
âPurrcasso and Moire need me,â he replies defensively.
âSure they do,â I say, winking. This guy seriously needs a hobby. All he has is me and his cats, and Iâm a full-time headache. I think he even said Iâm his human migraine once.
âWe need to add several things,â Liora says.
Iâve never bothered to read the contract, but Lioraâs got it handled. I wonder why she stopped pursuing law; sheâs a natural.
âAre you guys finished or what?â Ethan says, slumping even further into the couch.
I nudge him with my elbow. âCut it, man.â
âLook at you, suddenly caring for someone.â
âHey, this is my chance of a lifetime, remember?â
âIt isâ¦â
Liora stands up, the bar stool screeching as she turns. She saunters over, sitting on the chair opposite from me and Ethan, with Nina grinning proudly behind her.
âWe changed a few things,â Liora announces. âI found some issues.â
âWhich are?â Ethan asks, his piercing blue eyes locked in a fierce stare down with Liora. I wish I had popcorn.
âWell, I changed some wording, but the legal framework remains intact. Do you need me to read it aloud for you?â she offers, a hint of a challenge in her voice.
Nina and I both suppress a chuckle.
âNo. Thank you,â Ethan grunts out.
âGood,â Liora continues. âLetâs review the added rules. Both parties agree to no nudity in the apartment.â
I cough at her wording. âNo what? I hate shirts.â
âNo nudity,â she repeats. âWe need to wear at least a shirt and shorts. This is a professional environment, nothing sketchy.â
âAfraid of my muscles?â I lean in, teasing.
âNo,â she retorts, meeting my gaze head-on. âBut I want this to be a professional setting.â
âFine. Whatâs next?â
âNo bringing people over. It could harm our image.â
âAgreed,â I say, though the thought of a sex drought is painful. Guess itâll just be me and my right hand for a while.
âI clarified the PDA in private part as well. Thereâs no physical contact in private,â she continues.
âAt all?â
âAt all. Including private kisses.â
I recline, resting my hands behind my head as I gaze at her. I notice my shirt rising up, and she glances at the skin revealed above my sweatpants before quickly glancing away again.
âBut we need to practice,â I say. âDoes that count as breaking the rule?â
Her cheeks go pink. Sheâs so cute.
âNo. But anything that could mess with one partyâs emotional attachment does.â
âGot it. No messing with emotions.â What if sheâs already messing around with mine?
âRight.â
âWhat else?â
âThis contract lasts six months. Once the show is done, I can move out without any further costs.â
âAgreed.â
âAndâ¦â
âAnd?â
The top of her cheeks are still flushed and she wonât meet my eyes.
âNo sex,â she says.
I huff out a laugh. âYou already mentioned that. Worried Iâm going to host sex parties or something?â
âNo.â The way her nostrils flare. âI mean between you and me.â
Oh. âSex, between you and me?â I sit up straight again and adjust myself as secretly as I can. Shit. Just the thought of it.
âYeah, no sex.â
Fuck. Did I give myself away? Did I ogle her too obviously? âWhat makes you think Iâd want that?â
Her eyes flicker, as if I said something unexpected. âI just want to be clear. No sex between us.â
âAnd what if you want to? Canât have you going to jail for lusting after me.â
She grunts, and I hear Ethan muttering something about why he had to end up with me as a client.
Lioraâs eyes narrow to slits. âNo. Sex.â
Oh, sheâs firm. âOkay, okay.â
âCan we please wrap this up?â Ethan sighs, raking a hand through his hair.
âI think itâs getting interesting,â Nina jokes, watching Liora and me closely.
âWe have to talk about what happens if we mess with the rules,â Liora says.
âIsnât it stated in the contract that if one party messes it up, the charade is over?â I say.
Liora nods.
âOkay.â I point at Nina. âPlease add that if that happens, I want to make sure she has a place to stay until her show finishes.â
âOh yeah,â Nina says and starts typing away on her laptop.
âNo, that is not necessaryââ
âIt is.â I donât want her having to go back to that tiny apartment, or landing somewhere worse.
âIs it over now?â Ethan says.
âThank you.â Lioraâs cheeks all heated again. âAnd yeah, I think I got it all covered now. Letâs sign so he can feed his cats,â Liora says, earning a giggle from Nina.
Nina prints out the revised contracts and hands one to Liora and one to me, along with pens. I sign mine quickly, but Liora reads through hers again, making Ethan groan about having the worst job in the world.
