Lacey agreed more readily than Joelle had anticipated. âI understand. You and your baby deserve justice.â
âYou believe me?â Joelle asked in surprise.
âOf course,â Lacey replied with a carefree smile. âYou not only helped my sister, but youâre also very kind to me. Plus, helping you doesnât put Adrian at any disadvantage. I promise to do my best to help you in the investigation.â
Having returned from the hospital, Joelle hadnât felt such warmth in a long time and was unexpectedly moved to tears.
âThere, there. Youâve just lost your baby, and you need to take care of your health.â
âI will.â
After her meeting with Lacey that afternoon, Joelleâs spirits lifted. Later, she received a call from Katherine.
âKatherine, I have some news to tell you!â she exclaimed, eager to share her joy about her pregnancy with her closest friend.
âJoelle, listen to me first. Have you seen Rebeccaâs Twitter?â Katherine asked without beating around the bush.
The mere mention of the name made Joelle brace for trouble. Before responding, she found a place to sit down. âNo, I havenât. I uninstalled Twitter a long time ago and havenât paid any attention to her,â Joelle said, determined to leave the past behind and ignore Rebeccaâs antics. She hadnât followed any updates on Rebeccaâs recent interactions with Adrian either.
âYou need to see it,â Katherine insisted with a hint of urgency in her voice. âThat bastard Adrian⦠How could he do this to you? Iâm buying a plane ticket right now to come and support you!â
The anger in Katherineâs voice gave Joelle a sinking feeling. Whatever Rebecca had posted must have been explosive. Joelle paused for a few seconds and then dropped the bombshell. âKatherine, Iâm pregnant.â
Katherine was in the middle of packing when she heard what Joelle had said. She froze at the news and abruptly straightened up. âAdrianâs baby?â
âYes.â
Katherine gathered her hair and paced restlessly around the room. âDoes Adrian know about this?â
âHe does, but heâs convinced the baby isnât his. He pressured me to have an abortion earlier, but I conspired with Rafael to keep the baby.â
Katherine sat on the edge of the bed. âJoelle, do you realize what this means? A child is a lifelong commitment. If you go through with this, youâll be tied to this child forever. Everything else in life can be returned, thrown away, or released, but not a child. Are you prepared for that?â
With a composed smile, Joelle replied confidently, âI am. Since Adrian doesnât know about the babyâs existence, I can raise the child myself after we divorce.â
âThatâs Adrianâs child. Why take on the burden alone?â Katherine sighed.
Joelle rested her hand protectively on her belly and answered with conviction, âNo, itâs mine. Marriages may fail, and spouses may leave. But this child is mine, and no one can change that.â
Katherine lit a cigarette and advised, âStill, I think you should see Rebeccaâs latest tweet before you decide anything.â
âAlright. Iâll check it out later. When are you coming back? Have you sorted everything out? Did you meet Frankie Calloway?â
Joelle was referring to the business magnate Katherine had been dying to meet.
Katherine took a long drag on her cigarette and grumbled, âDonât even get me started. That jerk has been leading me on.â
âHuh? What happened?â
âI finally got his assistantâs number and set up a meeting for tonight. But then he called and said he couldnât make it. Iâve traveled halfway around the world, and all I get is his assistantâs contact. The next time I see him, I swear Iâm going to give him a piece of my mind!â
Joelle sympathized with her friend but couldnât suppress a laugh at Katherineâs words. âWhy donât you come back first? And please, donât tell anyone about my pregnancy yet, especially my brother.â
If Shawn learned that Adrian had coerced her into an abortion, he would seek retribution from Irene, potentially jeopardizing Watson Group. They had just succeeded in ousting Spencer in front of Irene. They couldnât afford to let Shawn ruin everything. Besides, Joelle didnât want Shawn to be burdened with worries about her while he was dedicating himself to his work abroad.
âLetâs wait until everything is stable. Itâs best not to announce a pregnancy until after the first three months,â Joelle mentioned.
âOkay then. Iâll do as you say. Iâll head back as soon as I can. Since youâre pregnant, donât bother looking at Rebeccaâs Twitter. It might upset you.â
âThe more you say that, the more I want to see it.â
âJust promise me you wonât look, at least until I get back.â
âOkay.â
Once the call ended, Katherine resumed her packing. Just then, her phone rang. It was Frankieâs assistant. Katherine answered the call with a heated outburst.
âTell your boss Iâve never met anyone so unreliable! Iâve been coordinating with him for almost a month, and he just bails on me. Wasting someoneâs time is like stealing their life, you know?â
âMiss Nash, please calm down. My boss had an emergency and couldnât make it,â the assistant replied.
âSo heâs playing games with me? Iâve told you, Iâm not tolerating this anymore! Heâd better stay out of my sight, or I swear Iâll let him have it if I ever meet him!â
