Joelle had already informed Leah sheâd be dining with Shawn. However, she hadnât anticipated Adrian arriving to fetch her himself.
As Adrian emerged from the car, limping slightly, he made a point of greeting Shawn out of courtesy. Shawnâs reception was tepid. He was aware of Joelleâs pragmatic approach towards Adrian during their meal. Since Joelle wouldnât fully commit to being Adrianâs wife, Shawn felt no qualms about using the relationship for mutual benefits. They were adults, and maintaining a polite facade seemed more appropriate than fostering animosity.
âReady to go home?â Adrianâs embrace around Joelle made them appear a united couple.
Joelle nodded, then turned to their company. âWeâre heading out, Shawn. Bye, Katherine. Drive safely.â
âDonât worry!â
Adrian opened the car door for Joelle. Once she was seated, he pulled out a pack of cigarettes and offered one to Shawn. Shawn accepted it, lighting up. âAnything else?â
âI managed to smooth things over with those tough clients for you. Let me know if you need anything else. Weâre family.â
Shawn paused, taken aback. His day had gone unusually smooth, and now he understood whyâAdrian had intervened.
âItâs been three years, and now you say weâre family? Isnât that a bit late?â Shawn asked, his smile polite but his eyes piercing.
Beside them, Katherineâs emotions were a mix of terror and thrill. Leaning casually against the car, Adrian responded, âThe situation has changed. Joelle and I have decided to start a family. Weâre planning a happy life together from now on.â
Shawn saw the resolve in Adrianâs eyes when he spoke. He knew children often cemented relationships. Adrianâs commitment to a shared future with Joelle signaled a shift in his intentions. Yet, whether this change would be enough for Joelle remained uncertain.
âGet in the car. Thatâs your issue to handle. But I have one conditionâyou canât hurt Joelle anymore. Sheâs endured too much over the years. She might not tell me everything, but that doesnât mean Iâm unaware,â Shawn asserted.
âI wonât,â Adrian replied with conviction. âNo one can make her suffer.â
As the car pulled away, Katherine, standing beside Shawn, scoffed, âMen are so fickle. His attitude towards Joelle would never have changed if not for the baby. Whatâs he implying? That heâs being forced to change just because of the child? Typical. Bastards never truly change!â
Listening to her rant, Shawn finished his cigarette and crushed it underfoot. Turning to her, he asked, âPutting Joelle aside, whatâs going on with you?â
âWhat about me?â Katherine responded, her expression blank.
Their gazes locked. Shawn hesitated, his emotions tangled. âIf thereâs something youâre reluctant to share with Joelle, you can confide in me. Donât shoulder important matters alone. Tell me, and we can figure it out together.â
Katherineâs confusion deepened. Why was Shawn suddenly so invested in her affairs? Earlier at dinner, she mentioned she couldnât drink because of her period, and she noticed a complex look in Shawnâs eyes. She puzzled over his reactionâwhat was so perplexing about that?
âOkay. I hear you,â she responded dismissively. âWhatâs your relationship with Bobby?â Shawn inquired.
âFriends.â
âThatâs it?â
After a pause, she quipped, âActually, heâs my son.â
Shawn didnât smile at her joke. His stern look made Katherineâs unease grow. âShawn, why do you suddenly pay so much attention to me?â
âNo reason.â Shawn gave her a reassuring pat on the shoulder. âLetâs head back.â
âOkay.â
Once home, Katherine powered on her phone and noticed a comment from Frankie on the post about the Eugene Riley vinyl. âWhat a coincidence! I have one, too.â
Katherine chose not to respond immediately. After her shower, she checked her phone again and saw a message from Frankie. âDo you like Eugene, too?â
Katherine typed back, âItâs actually for a friend.â
Frankie asked, âYour boyfriend?â
Katherine replied, âIâm single.â
Frankie responded, âMe too.â
Katherine queried, âSo?â
Frankie explained, âWe can chat freely then. Can I ask you something personal?â
Raising an eyebrow, Katherine typed back, âWhat is it?â
Frankie said, âI just found out a friend of my sisterâs is pregnant. She keeps it a secret, but I really want to help. What should I do?â
Sitting on her bed, Katherine pondered before asking, âDo you have feelings for her?â
Frankie clarified, âI care for her, yes. But itâs like sheâs family.â
Katherine advised, âIf sheâs keeping it under wraps, she has her reasons. The best you can do as a friend is to support her unconditionally. Just be there for her, and sheâll open up when sheâs ready.â
Frank responded, âSupport her, huh? That makes sense. I guess I havenât been attentive enough before.â
