On the way home, Joelle remained silent, gazing out the window. Suddenly, Adrianâs large hand clasped hers. âWhat are you thinking about?â Joelle had a lot on her mind.
The childâ¦
The situation with Ned that she had delegated to Laceyâ¦
But these were topics she couldnât share with Adrian.
âNothing.â She shook her head.
Adrianâs expression remained serene as he pinched her chin, coaxing her to look at him. âIs work troubling you?â
âNo.â Joelle shifted the conversation. âYou havenât been around Rebecca lately. Is everything alright?â
âWhat could be wrong?â Adrianâs arm encircled her waist, his hold firm but gentle as he lifted her effortlessly.
Joelle suddenly found herself perched on his lap, an uncomfortable pressure against her, constrained by the cramped back seat.
Adrianâs hand drifted to her lower back, then to her slightly bulging abdomen. He teased, âHave you been overindulging lately?â
Feeling a surge of anxiety, Joelle blushed deeply, hastily moving his hand away, fearful he might detect the change in her body.
Adrian cradled her head, planting a kiss on her forehead. âSeems like Leah should get a bonus for keeping you so well-fed.â
âYouâre the one whoâs plump.â
Joelleâs mild annoyance only made her more endearing, prompting Adrian to lean in for a deep kiss.
Joelleâs eyes widened in shock.
She hadnât anticipated such intimacy in such a setting. Adrian was the aggressor, his kiss passionate, leaving her heart racing.
She felt unexpectedly overwhelmed, his intense kiss nearly drawing the breath from her.
Pressed firmly against him, her posture rigid, she moaned breathlessly. âHmmâ¦â
As she gasped for air, the faint sound made Adrian finally release her.
Their foreheads still touching, Adrian teased with a sly grin, âWhat about tonight?â
Joelle knew what he meant. Since the âabortion,â Adrian had been abstinent for too long.
If she kept refusing, it would definitely arouse his suspicions.
âLetâs discuss it at home.â
Adrianâs smile widened slightly, and he kissed her again gently.
Upon reaching home, Joelleâs anxiety spiked.
The moment they stepped through the door, Adrian pinned her against it, his kiss fervent, the slight pressure on her abdomen causing her to tremble with apprehension.
Though slightly stirred, she knew this wasnât the moment for intimacy.
As they kissed, Adrian shed his shirt and guided her hand to his chest.
Joelleâs pulse thundered, her entire being aflame with conflicting emotions.
With effort, she pushed him back, panting from the exertion and the emotional tumult. âYou go take a shower first!â
Adrian grasped Joelleâs wrist, his tone thick with urgency. âYou bathe me.â
Feeling his intense heat, Joelle recoiled, pulling her hand free. âNo!â
Unperturbed by her rebuke, Adrian wrapped his arms around her from behind. âTell me, how long do you plan to keep me waiting?â
âWhoâs keeping you waiting?â Joelle retorted, her cheeks burning and her heart heavy. âGo take a bath.â
Feeling the tension between them slightly soften, Adrian didnât want to escalate the situation and reluctantly headed for the bathroom.
Once he was inside, Joelle composed herself and quickly dialed Rebecca.
âAdrian is with me every day now. That must be uncomfortable for you, right?â
Rebecca immediately recognized Joelleâs voice. Since she opted from Adrian, her resentment towards Joelle had been brewing for some time.
âJoelle, why deceive yourself? Adie has already told me heâs only with you to fulfill his grandmotherâs wish for a great-grandchild. Joelle, itâs pitiful, really. Youâre just a breeding machine to him. Originally, Adie planned to have a child with me, but given my health concerns, he opted for you instead.â
Joelleâs fingers clenched around her phone. Although the revelation wasnât shocking, it deepened the numb ache in her heart, pushing aside any flicker of jealousy. âReally? If thatâs so, why donât you call him away? Rebecca, canât you see how heâs drawn to me more each day? Leaving you is inevitable.â
Rebecca bit her lip hard. âJoelle, what are you playing at?â Calmly, Joelle challenged, âI propose a bet. Bet you canât pull him away with just one call. If you fail, it just shows your insignificance. Iâve overestimated you all along.â
âLetâs bet!â
Joelle glanced back towards the bathroom door, her voice firm. âThen call him after ten minutes. Rebecca, prepare to be the laughingstock.â
âHumph, weâll see who ends up embarrassed!â Rebecca disconnected abruptly.
Joelleâs confidence wavered as Adrianâs voice filtered through the bathroom door. âJoelle, bring me a towel.â
She knew full well there were towels readily available inside. Adrianâs request was clearly a pretext.
Reluctantly, Joelle decided not to provoke him and entered.
âHere.â She carefully avoided making eye contact with Adrian as she passed him the towel.
But in a swift motion, Adrianâs wet hand clasped her wrist, drawing her closer.
