âIf you had cut ties with the Lloyd family sooner, Joelle and the child wouldnât be in this mess today!â Irene spat. Adrian acknowledged his role in the calamity, his head bowed, choosing not to contest Ireneâs accusation. Moments later, Irene summoned Joelle.
As Joelle entered, she glanced at Adrian, detecting no telltale signs of distress in his demeanor, leaving her puzzled about the cause of his earlier outburst. She had braced herself for Irene to accuse her of conspiring with Adrian against Spencer, but such allegations never came.
âDonât worry, Joelle. Erick will face justice for his actions. No mere prison term will suffice for harming a Miller,â Irene declared with a fierce undertone.
Catching Adrianâs eye, Joelle felt a pang of sorrow, fully aware of the significance the Lloyd family held for him. The resolution would hinge on Adrianâs decision regarding Erick. Joelle had borne her share of mistreatment from the Lloyds. Now, the thought of her child enduring the same was unbearable.
âIâd like to hear Adrianâs stance on this first,â Joelle stated firmly.
Irene nodded, perceiving Joelleâs intent to gauge Adrianâs loyalty. âVery well. Adrian, your course of action?â
Adrianâs response was grave. âTurn him over to the authorities. Iâll respect whatever sentence they impose.â
Irene expressed her approval, relieved by Adrianâs clear judgment on such a critical matter. âJoelle, do you hear that? Adrian acknowledges his missteps. Letâs afford him the opportunity to rectify them.â
Joelleâs emotions faltered with each glance at Adrian, his allure reigniting the embers of her youthful affection. Yet, the history of hurt she bore couldnât be mended by mere chances, nor could they erase the scars or promise a seamless resolution.
With a gentle smile tinged with sadness, she shook her head, her eyes glistening. âIrene, it seems youâve forgotten why Adrian returned.â
Ireneâs demeanor stiffened, the memory of Rebecca momentarily slipping her mind. Adrianâs return had been out of concern for Rebecca. Her expression darkening, Irene challenged, âAdrian, youâve always shielded Rebecca. Now, with her brotherâs actions, do you still intend to protect her?â
Adrianâs posture stiffened, his brow furrowed in conflict. âGrandma, Rebecca is all thatâs left of the Lloyd family. Her motherâs back in their hometown, and Rebeccaâs health is failing. With Erick gone, sheâs alone.â
âItâs not your responsibility anymore. Remember, youâre married!â Irene snapped sharply.
Adrianâs gaze shifted to Joelle, her composure serene yet distant. âJoelle, is your heart truly closed to Rebecca?â
âEnough!â Ireneâs anger flared. Joelle had been nothing but a devoted spouse, yet Adrianâs fixation with the Lloyds overshadowed his duties to her. She really didnât know what the Lloyd family had done to make him so concerned about them.
Joelle, tired of the fruitless discussion, cut to the heart of the matter. âNo wife would tolerate her husband harboring another woman. If he canât stay away from Rebecca, I refuse to waste more of my life here.â
âJoelle, leave this with me. Iâll handle it,â Irene reassured, taking command of the situation. She was resolute. With a definitive gesture, she summoned two aides.
âTake Rebecca back to her hometown immediately. The Miller family has extended enough generosity. Her fate is no longer our concern!â
âGrandma!â Adrian protested.
Ireneâs gaze on Adrian was icy as she admonished, âAdrian, youâve erred gravely here. Remember, Joelle bore your child and became your wife legally. Is Rebecca worth the ruin of your marriage?â
Adrianâs hands balled into fists. Without his support in her hometownâbereft of adequate medical care and necessary fundsâRebeccaâs chances were slim. Erick was rightfully jailed, yet the thought of failing Rebecca haunted him. He had promised her father and brother to protect her.
In a harsh tone, Adrian retorted, âMy influence failed to save my father or my child. Must I also stand by powerless to protect Rebecca?â
Joelle felt the urge to leave. Why stay when Adrian so clearly prioritized Rebecca over their vows? Her heart ached at the thought: his stubborn devotion rendered Rebecca a tragic figure, and herself a neglected counterpart. Did he not cherish her at all, after all theyâd shared?
Biting back tears, she declared, âIf thatâs the case, I need to go.â
âMrs. Miller!â
The interruption came as an elderly servant burst through the door, halting Joelleâs next words.
âWhatâs the urgency?â Irene responded with evident annoyance.
âSalome Lloyd is here!â
