âWhat?â Adrian and Irene exclaimed simultaneously, their surprise mirroring each otherâs. Joelle, unfamiliar with the name Salome, surmised she must be someone of significance. Ireneâs insistence on meeting her despite her frail condition was telling. Curious, Joelle followed into the reception room where a frail, elderly woman sat in a wheelchair, her eyes reflecting a hint of fear.
Amara, too, had caught wind of the visitor and descended the stairs, her eyes scanning the gathering. Lyla and Katie, also alerted, found a pretext to join the others. As soon as Irene seated herself, a dark figure darted past her. Adrian approached briskly. âSalome? What brings you here?â
Trembling, Salome clutched Adrianâs wrist, her voice breaking as she sobbed, âAdrian! Where are Rebecca and Erick? I canât find them anywhere!â
âCalm down,â Adrian urged, his tone gentle.
It was then that Joelle realized Salome was Rebecca and Erickâs mother, who had lived back in their hometown. Observing Adrianâs respectful and patient demeanor with Salome contrasted sharply with his previous impatience towards her own request to visit her father, who was in a vegetative state. This realization struck Joelle sharplyâAdrianâs respect was reserved exclusively for the Lloyd family.
âWhere are they? Has something happened to them?â Salome, a simple and earnest old woman, glanced around anxiously before her eyes settled on Adrian, seeing him as her beacon of hope.
Noticing Adrian was encumbered by Salome, Amara scoffed, âReally? You have some nerve. Rebecca has been nothing but a burden to Adrian, and Erick implicated someone else in an attempt to assault Adrianâs wife, which led to her losing her baby. What do we possibly owe your family? Youâre all leeches!â
âWhat?â Salome gasped, her face draining of color. âAdrian! Is that true?â
âSalome, letâs find you a place to rest,â Adrian said, his lips pressed into a thin line. He did not refute the accusations, implying Amaraâs harsh words held truth.
Tears began to flow down Salomeâs cheeks as she approached Amara in her wheelchair. âI am deeply sorry for what Rebecca and Erick have done. I truly am! I had no idea.â
Amara recoiled from Salomeâs outstretched hands, clearly repulsed. âYouâre apologizing to me? Why donât you ask Joelle if she forgives you? Or Irene?â
Joelle, standing by Amara, watched as Salome turned toward her. âYou must be Joelle! I deeply apologize on behalf of Rebecca and Erick! I am ready to make amends for their wrongs. I donât have many years left, but I am willing to serve you, to do anything you ask of me!â Salome broke down sobbing. Her tears flowed freely as she repeatedly apologized, leaving Joelle feeling conflicted.
She disliked the Lloyd family, yet Salome herself had committed no wrong. She gently took Salomeâs arm. âSalome, right? The actions of Erick and Rebecca are not your fault. I wonât punish the innocent. However, I will hold accountable those who have wronged me.â
Salome, momentarily taken aback, quickly turned to Irene, pleading, âIâm sorry!â
Irene, visibly annoyed, refused even a touch from Salome. âYour apologies change nothing. Iâve lost my great-grandchild forever.â
âPleaseâ¦â Salome implored. Ignoring her, Irene declared sharply, âYouâve arrived just in time. Take Rebecca and leave. I donât want to see either of you again. Donât come back!â
Defeated, Salomeâs hands fell to her sides as she wept. âI came to Millerith to be with Rebecca and Erick.â Everyone looked at her. âMy relatives back home took everything from me. Now, I have nowhere else to go.â
Understanding dawned on Irene. âSo, you expect Adrian to support you? Your familyâs audacity knows no bounds!â
âThatâs not true!â Salome protested immediately. âI can workâI do handicrafts. I can support my children. We wonât be a burden to Adrian.â
Adrian approached, crouching before Salome to offer support. âSalome, youâre in poor health, and with Rebecca and Erick as your only family, itâs my duty to ensure youâre looked after.â
âAdrian,â Salome said, tears streaming down her face. âYou are a good, generous man, but we can manage on our own. We donât want charity. Where is Rebecca? Iâve come to take her home.â
Lyla winked at Katie, who offered, âI know where she is. Iâll go fetch her.â
Moments later, Rebecca was led in. âMom!â she exclaimed, rushing to embrace Salome.
âRebecca!â Salome returned her embrace, both sobbing. Witnessing their reunion, Joelle felt increasingly detached. She used to think Rebecca was a poor girl, but she didnât think so anymore. At least Rebecca had her mother. But she was all alone.
