Katherine coughed violently, spluttering juice. Joelle thumped her back gently. Once Katherine regained her composure, she gasped, âGod, Joelle, donât just blurt things out like that!â
âIâm serious, Katherine!â Joelle insisted, her voice filled with conviction. âShawn has been acting differently. Think about it. He was waiting outside that restaurant for you, and heâs constantly concerned about your health, even reminding you to drink less.â A cold realization washed over Katherine. Shawn was her friendâs brother. If not for Joelleâs observation, Katherine would never have thought of Shawn as a potential romantic interest. Shawn was indeed attractive and kind, traits anyone would admire, but for Katherine, ambition and success were what truly drew her to a man.
She respected the Watson family, but for someone to impress her, they needed to demonstrate significant achievements.
âYou might be reading too much into things,â Katherine replied dismissively. âShawn and I have always been close like this.â
âReally?â Joelle sounded unconvinced as she exited the room.
Left alone, Katherine massaged her temples, contemplating the conversation. Her phone vibrated with a new message, breaking her train of thought. It was Frankie. âGood afternoon.â
Katherine smirked at the predictabilityâFrankie was consistent, if nothing else, texting her at the same times each day as if on clockwork.
She didnât respond right away, instead scrolling through her social media. There, she noticed his latest postâa photo of a meeting, focusing only on his hand strategically placed on a conference room table. His hand was well-defined, with long fingers.
Katherine admired the aesthetic of the photo, finally responding, âGood afternoon.â Frankie inquired, âJust woke up?â
âYeah, I had a late night with clients.â
âYou should probably take it easy on the drinks. I know someone whoâs pregnant and still drinking. I try to look out for her, but it just leads to misunderstandings.â
Katherine raised an eyebrow, reminded of Shawn. She replied, âThat sounds familiar. My best friendâs brother has been showing extra concern lately. Itâs quite unusual.â
âHow so? Tell me more.â
âSure, we keep bumping into each other, and heâs always advising me about my health, even more than my own family does.â
âSeems like he might have a crush on you.â
âHeâs a decent man, but I donât see him that way.â
âPerhaps you could hint that youâre not interested. Being too direct might make things uncomfortable since heâs your best friendâs brother.â
Katherine agreed, mulling over his advice. Their conversation soon ended as Frankie had to attend to work matters.
Switching to her private account, Katherine selected a particularly evocative photo from her galleryâa tableau of red wine and candlelight from a reflective bath night. With a melancholic filter enhancing its mood, she uploaded it, setting the visibility for Shawn only. âLove is the ebb and flow of destiny, and here I float, alone. Cheers!â
Later that night, after a long day, Shawn found himself browsing social media post-shower. Katherineâs post halted his scrolling. Was she signaling a romantic drift? Was she no longer with her childâs father?
Resisting the urge to comment directly, he instead lit a cigarette, pondered, and decided on a more personal approach. He texted her. âKatherine, you up? Can we talk?â
At a dinner with clients, Katherineâs phone buzzed. Reading his message, a chill of anticipation swept through her. âSure, whatâs on your mind?â
âDonât despair. Even if he doesnât value you, cherish yourself. Look around. Thereâs still beauty in the world.â Katherine shivered as she replied with unsteady fingers, âShawn, just get to the point.â
âIâm here for you, always. When youâre ready to talk, Iâll listen.â
Stunned, Katherine dropped her phone on the table, causing a stir among her companions.
âKatherine, are you alright?â
Exasperated, she murmured, âThis is a problem. Someoneâs developed feelings for me.â
âThatâs wonderful news! Cheers to finding love and success!â
âStop it! Itâsâ¦â
Shawn was Joelleâs brother! And Joelle wasnât just her best friend. She was like a sister. And that made Shawn her brother. Getting involved with him romantically would be absurd! âThis is too complicated.â Needing an escape, Katherine stepped out and dialed Bobby. âI need a favor.â Bobbyâs voice came promptly. âI canât offer money, but I can give my all.â
âI need you to pretend to be my boyfriend.â
A pause from Bobby, then a resigned sigh. âI knew it! Youâve been harboring feelings for me!â
âStop it. Just help me out. Are you in or not?â
âWhatâs my benefit?â
âSeriously? Just be a good friend.â
âFine. But give me ten minutes to break up with my current girlfriend.â
