Everything he owned? Adrian scoffed, amusement tinting his voice. âDo you really believe youâre worth that much?â
âClearly, thereâs nothing more to talk about.â Joelle was weary of seeing Adrian lavish attention on another woman.
Adrian mused that his patience with Joelle had grown. Because of the loss of the baby, he had been prepared to overlook her deceitful means to secure their marriage. Even post-divorce, his intent had been reconciliation.
Yet, he was taken aback by her apparent ingratitude. He reached for her once more just as Shawn stepped in, grasping Joelleâs other wrist. âAdrian, let her be.â The smile Shawn offered Adrian didnât quite touch his eyes.
Adrian sneered, his disdain clear. âSo, after taking enough money from me, you decide to sever ties? Is that it?â
Joelleâs expression darkened. âMind your words, Adrian! I owe you nothing.â
âYou think you owe me nothing?â
âWhat could I possibly owe you?â
âA child.â Adrian hadnât anticipated himself stooping so low, using such a vile strategy to bind Joelle. âI told you, give me a child, and Iâll set you free.â
Shawnâs jaw clenched as he moved forward, seizing Adrian by the collar, his breathing controlled yet forceful. âAdrian, donât test your luck. Joelle is no longer part of your life. Why should she have your child?â
Adrian glanced coldly at his own hand. âIâd advise you to release me, Shawn. Here in Illerith, I can dismantle Watson Group with a mere whisper.â
âYouââ
âShawn!â Joelle, fearing the confrontation might escalate, quickly intervened.
She maneuvered a seething Shawn behind her, then faced Adrian, her smile sharp. âA child? You had one once, didnât you? You chose to terminate it yourself, remember?â
At her words, a shadow fell over Adrianâs features. Shawn, taken aback, demanded, âWhat are you talking about, Joelle?â He had been overseas at the time, oblivious to the ordeal Joelle had endured.
Her revelation left Adrian too mortified to press any further. With poised indifference, Joelle declared, âShawn, we should leave now.â
âWait, what did you just say? A baby? How come I was never informed?â
âIâll explain everything to you later.â
Joelle ushered Shawn quickly out the door. Meanwhile, Rebecca watched Adrianâs expression with caution. âAdie, are you alright?â
Adrian generally avoided directing his anger at those not responsible, so his current irritation from his encounter with Joelle wouldnât be unleashed on Rebecca. However, the loss of the baby, a casualty of Erickâs machinations, had lately cooled his demeanor towards the Lloyd family.
âIâm fine. Go ahead and pick out a place. Choose any two-bedroom apartment you fancy.â
Rebeccaâs heart fluttered with secret joy. She still seemed to matter to Adrian. âAdie, might we consider a three-bedroom instead?â
âWhy the need for so many rooms? Two should suffice for you and Salome.â
âBut Erickââ
âHe isnât returning.â Adrianâs response was flat, his voice empty of emotion.
Rebeccaâs complexion blanched. âAdie, Erick was merely misled and knew he was wrong!â
She attempted to argue further, but Adrianâs icy look cut her off. Salome hastily pulled at her sleeve, urging her to drop the subject.
Rebecca sniffled, a slight desperation in her voice. âAlright. But with a three-bedroom, thereâd at least be room for you to stay over if needed.â
Adrian remained silent, only to be met with his frosty stare. âEnough with your manipulations.â
Rebecca fell silent, too intimidated to continue. A sales assistant approached them, her badge gleaming. âHello, Iâm Tess Bray. How may I assist you today?â
Adrian, eager to end the conversation, replied curtly, âPlease find them an apartment.â
With those words, he turned and departed, his expression clouding over.
He made his way back to the houseâwhat once was a shared home with Joelle. Now, it felt stark and void of warmth, lacking Joelleâs bright smile and Leahâs tender care.
A car was parked outside, and upon entering, Adrian was greeted by Amara. âWhat are you doing here?â he asked, loosening his tie as he moved deeper into the house.
Amara followed, her energy undiminished. âIâm here to introduce you to potential partners! You need to move on and have a child quickly, so we can secure a larger portion of the family estate.â
âMom, Iâve just ended my marriage.â
âAnd?â Amara dismissed his hesitations with a wave of her hand. âYouâre a catch, Adrian. Plenty of women would jump at the chance to marry you!â
She thrust a stack of photographs into his hands. âTake a look at this oneâsheâs a young doctor. And this one, my friendâs daughter, top of her class and at a leading university. And isnât this one simply stunning?â
Adrianâs irritation grew. âMom, things arenât finished between Joelle and me.â
âWhat do you mean ânot finished?'â Amaraâs tone sharpened as she scattered the photos in his direction. âSheâs nothing but an infertile woman, unable to provide you with a child. What use is such a daughter-in-law to me?â
Adrianâs gaze turned frosty. âWhat did you just call her?â
