What Joelle saw first was Lacey. She didnât understand why Lacey was there, nor why she was on the floor. Glancing around, she spotted Lacey, Michael, Rebecca, and even Salome, positioned in her wheelchair. Joelle propped herself up, pressing a hand to her head and voiced her bewilderment. âWhat happened to me?â
Rebecca was quick to respond before Joelle could sense anything amiss. âJoelle, donât you remember? You collapsed while walking. My mother and I were just about to get help when Lacey and Michael showed up.â
âReally?â Joelle was still trying to piece together the events. âWhy would I faint?â
âPerhaps itâs been a tiring period for you, hasnât it?â Rebecca forced a smile.
It made sense. Joelle was pregnant now, and she was very nervous because of the childrenâs performance these days. It wasnât surprising she might faint. Lacey, offering a hand, asked gently, âAre you alright? Do you think you should see a doctor?â
Rebecca tensed, her hand involuntarily clutching her thigh. Joelle, however, merely smiled and reassured, âI think I just need some rest. Iâll head home.â
How could she go to the hospital for a physical examination with so many people? If a doctor inadvertently disclosed her pregnancy, it would undermine her careful plans with Rafael for âher trainingâ in another city.
âReally?â Lacey pressed, concerned.
âYes, Iâm fine, really,â Joelle insisted.
âJoelle, you should still consider a hospital visit. Adrian will be here soon. He can accompany you if we canât,â Michael chimed in, his tone persuasive.
âHeâs coming here?â Joelle asked, surprised.
âYes, you gave us quite a scare. We were hesitant to even touch you, fearing it might worsen things.â
Joelle maintained her composure towards those showing concern. âThen let him go back. Iâm really fine.â
Rebecca and Salome exchanged secret sighs of relief, pleased that Joelle seemed not to dwell further on the incident, allowing them a chance to escape further questioningâand possibly to see Adrian. The situation seemed to resolve smoothly.
Joelle descended the escalator as Adrian ascended on the opposite side. Their eyes met, and Adrian abruptly turned to rush down towards her. Unable to reverse her direction due to her pregnancy, Joelle could only watch as Adrian reached her.
âAre you okay?â Adrian grabbed Joelleâs arm, checking her carefully.
Joelle pulled her arm away with a slight grimace. âAdrian, Iâm fine, really.â
Ignoring her protests, Adrian grasped her wrist. âWeâre going to the hospital.â
âI told you, Iâm fine!â
Adrianâs actions bewildered her. They were divorced, yet his concern seemed persistent. Was it just guilt over their lost child? But she remained skeptical that his guilt could truly change him.
Without their child, she doubted he had any genuine concern for her at all. Adrianâs expression grew stern. âYour health isnât up for debate. Weâre going to the hospital now.â
âNo.â Joelle stood her ground.
Adrianâs patience thinned. Previously, he might have stormed off in response to her defiance, but concern over her recent fainting, possibly a complication from her abortion, stilled his temper.
âJust let me make sure youâre okay. After that, Iâll take you home,â he promised, his tone softening.
Joelle felt a pang of cynicism. If not for the baby, would his demeanor be so gentle? Men were always like this. They wouldnât care until everything was irreversible.
âDonât bother, Adrian. Your sweetheart is upstairs. Go find her instead.â
Adrianâs attempt at reconciliation fell flat, leaving him to ponder. For a man accustomed only to the bitterness of black coffee, Joelleâs rebuff added another layer to his scant roster of hardships.
âAdie!â Rebeccaâs voice echoed from the other end of the escalator.
As Adrian turned, Joelle seized the moment to slip away, unwilling to linger in discomfort. Adrian and Rebecca were a perfect match. She didnât want to stay and make herself uncomfortable.
En route home, Joelleâs phone rangâit was Rafael.
âI heard you fainted at the mall?â he inquired.
âHow did you know?â
Rafaelâs reply carried a hint of irony. âBelieve it or not, it was Adrian who told me. He couldnât convince you to see a doctor, so he asked me to ensure you get checked.â
Joelle was more than surprised. She was bewildered. Adrianâs recent anger had been directed at her and Rafael both. How had he so quickly shifted to concern, even going so far as to involve Rafael in her health?
âThank you, Rafael. But Iâm really fine. I just need some rest, thatâs all.â
âLook, I have to follow through. I canât just ignore Adrianâs request. Plus, Iâm concerned about you, too. Can you meet me at the hospital now?â
