Rebecca didnât expect Adrian to call her at this hour. The unexpected ring sent a jolt through her, a mix of surprise, delight, and a thread of anxiety curling in her chest. âAdie? Is there something you need to discuss?â
âYes.â
Rebeccaâs heart skipped a beat. Nervously, she asked, âWhatâs the matter?â
âAre you adjusting well to living here with your mother?â His question deepened the unease already stirring within her. For a moment, she was at a loss for words.
âAdie, are you planning to send my mother and me away? Illerith is so vast. Canât we stay here?â
A brief silence followed. Adrian spoke, his tone cold and detached. âYou misunderstand me.â
Rebecca breathed a sigh of relief. âAdie, everything is fine here for my mother and me. You donât need to worry.â
âOkay.â
There was another silence, then Rebecca ventured, âAdrian, itâs been so long since youâve visited me.â His response was calm, almost dismissive. âWeâll talk about it later. Iâve been a bit busy lately.â
âWhatâs been keeping you so busy?â Rebecca asked, attempting to sound playful, even coquettish. âYou used to visit often when you were married to Joelle.â Silence greeted her words, a silence that quickly festered into anxiety. Had she overstepped? She worried she could have said too much and upset him.
But then, Adrianâs voice came through the line, deep and steady. âIâve been busy with blind dates.â
Rebecca was stunned, her grip on the phone tightening as her mind raced. Words failed her, leaving her speechless. Beside her, Salome took the phone from her.
âAdrian, blind dates? Thatâs wonderful news! I hope you find someone special soon.â
âThank you!â
When the call ended, Salome turned to Rebecca and pinched her arm. âCanât you be more sensible? Why didnât you say anything when he mentioned the blind dates? How do you expect to become his wife in the future if you let him slip away like that?â
Rebeccaâs eyes welled up with tears, but she didnât even flinch at the pain of the pinch. She murmured repeatedly, âHeâs going on blind dates. Heâs going to get married againâ¦â
âWhat are you so afraid of?â Salome, unfazed, rolled her wheelchair over to the television, casually grabbing a snack. âAs long as you keep playing the sickly damsel and we stay in Illerith, Adrian canât just shake us off. Weâll have everything we need! Itâs not like he can simply ignore us. Not unless your brother and father rise from the grave. Heâll have to look after us for the rest of his life!â
âBut heâs going to get married again!â Rebeccaâs voice cracked as she screamed, tears streaming down her cheeks.
Salome glanced at Rebecca, her voice laced with resignation. âBut what can you do? Irene looks down on our family, and Adrianâs mother will never approve of you as her daughter-in-law. Rebecca, listen to me. As long as you keep Adrianâs heart, it doesnât matter who you are.â
âI can marry him!â Rebecca insisted. âWhen Joelleâs family declined, she only married Adrian because of that accident!â
âHow dare you bring that up!â Salomeâs anger flared, her teeth grinding in frustration. âYou drugged Adrian, Rebecca. It was the perfect opportunity, and you let it slip through your fingers, handing Joelle the advantage! If you hadnât been so foolish, you would have been Adrianâs wife by now!â
Rebeccaâs nails dug into her palms, her heart seething with hatred. The memory of that fateful accident three years ago filled her with a fresh wave of anger. âAdie had to take responsibility for her because of that night. It will be the same now. As long as I push things further with him, heâll have no choice but to be responsible for me.â
Salomeâs eyes narrowed, a sudden realization dawning on her. âRebecca, what are you planning?â
âMom.â Rebeccaâs eyes were cold. âIâve waited for three years. I wonât wait any longer. I wonât let Adrian marry another woman again!â
Joelle walked through the hospital doors, a bouquet of flowers in hand, ready to visit Irene. But as soon as she entered the room, she realized she could have picked the wrong time. Adrian was already there, and so was Amara.
Irene, half-reclined on the bed, smiled warmly at Joelle. âJoelle, youâve come to see me.â
âIrene, how are you feeling?â
Irene held her hand and said, âI feel much better now that youâre here.â
Just then, a knock sounded at the door, and to Joelleâs dismay, Rebecca and Salome entered. The last two people Joelle wanted to see had appeared. Could this have been arranged by Adrian? She glanced at him, but his expression was as cold and unreadable as ever.
Lately, it seemed like Adrian was growing more distant, though perhaps it was just her imagination. Amara tossed her hair back, breaking the tense silence. âWell, now that everyoneâs here, shall I begin?â
âBegin what?â Joelle asked, puzzled.
Irene patted Joelleâs hand with a smile. âJoelle, just watch.â Joelleâs confusion only deepened. She looked at Rebecca and Salome, noticing they seemed just as baffled.
Then, Amara, with a haughty air, declared, âSince everyone is present, Irene and I will serve as witnesses. Rebecca, from this moment on, you are my adopted daughter.â
Rebeccaâs face went pale with shock. Salome gasped but quickly composed herself, forcing a smile. âSurely this isnât appropriate!â
