Joelle clapped a hand over her mouth, too stunned to speak. Her long lashes, now damp, glistened with tears. One crystalline drop slid down her cheek. She stared at Rafael, eyes wide, unblinking. At that moment, she wept for Rafaelâs unspoken love. She understood all too well the ache of secret affection and the pain of unreciprocated feelings.
âRafael⦠Iâm so sorry.â Her words broke into a sob.
âYou didnât do anything wrong.â
He loved someone who did not love him back. Was an apology really necessary? It seemed almost absurd. Once, Rafael had been crushed by Joelleâs marriage, but now, as he looked at her, there was a spark of hope. If only he had known her marriage was unhappy, he would have come for her sooner, sparing her the agony of waiting.
Tenderly, Rafael touched the back of her head. âThereâs something else I need to tell you.â
âWhat is it?â
Rafael sighed. âAdrian thought I was the one you had a crush on.â
Joelleâs eyes widened further. âHow could that be?â
âItâs my fault,â Rafael confessed. âBack in high school, Adrian, Michael, and I talked about who you might like. They both assumed it was me. When I found out your marriage wasnât what youâd hoped for, I was angry, and I provoked Adrian once, just to spite him.â
As he spoke, he wiped a trickle of blood from the corner of his mouth, offering her a rueful smile. âMaybe this is karma coming back to bite me.â
So that was it! Joelle considered his words, her thoughts swirling. Though Rafael hadnât shared this with her before, it didnât seem as earth-shattering as it first appeared. Adrian didnât like Rafael, but Rafael did like her, which seemed strange but reasonable.
âRafael, donât get upset because of Adrian.â
âIâm not upset.â Rafaelâs expression softened, his tone light. âI like you, and youâre here with me now. You stood up for me just moments ago. So really, shouldnât Adrian be the frustrated one?â
Joelle let the words sink in for a moment. She couldnât help but be amused by Rafaelâs logic.
At midnight, Adrian sat at the bar, nursing his drink with Michael beside him.
âDonât drink too much,â Michael warned, pulling the bottle away. But Adrian, with grim determination, uncapped a second one.
âAlas!â Michael sighed heavily, leaning back in his chair. âIf you canât move on, why not take a step back and try to win Joelle back?â
âFuck off!â
Undeterred, Michael pressed on. âAre you seriously telling me you havenât felt anything for Joelle in the last three years? Not even a little?â
Adrianâs expression darkened. âWould you fall in love with a woman who forced you to marry her? She drugged me, Michael! To this day, I donât know if Joelle married me for my money or something else.â
Michael clicked his tongue thoughtfully. âAdrian, I think it mightâve been a bit of both.â
With a sudden crash, Adrian slammed his bottle onto the table. He seized Michaelâs collar, his grip desperate, as if seeking some anchor. âBut she loves Rafael!â
âI know, I know,â Michael said, trying to calm him. He wasnât sure how to handle Adrian in this state. Just then, a woman approached, her white dress almost glowing in the dim light.
âMichael!â
âRebecca? What are you doing here?â
Rebecca smiled. âMom asked me to come for Adie.â
Michael remembered that Amara had recently decided to adopt Rebecca, but he hadnât expected it to happen so quicklyâor for Rebecca to so effortlessly fall into the role.
âHeâs fine,â Michael said. âI was going to take him upstairs to rest.â
Rebecca moved closer, gently slipping her arm around Adrianâs. âMom wants me to take him home.â
Michael hesitated, his phone vibrating in his pocket. It was Lacey.
âHello? Whatâs up?â
Lacey often called him after fights with her family, needing a place to crash.
Michael answered, rubbing his temples. After he agreed with Lacey, he glanced back at Adrian, embarrassed.
âGo ahead, Michael. Iâll take care of him.â
Michael hesitated for a moment longer before nodding. âAlright. Iâll leave Adrian with you.â
As Michael hurried off, Rebecca leaned in close to Adrianâs ear, her voice soft and coaxing. âAdrian, letâs go!â
Adrian, too intoxicated to recognize who was helping him, tried to push her away but couldnât manage more than a few stumbling steps.
Rebecca guided him to the hotel room upstairs. The moment the door swung open, Adrian staggered toward the bed.
Rebecca, her heart pounding with a mix of nervousness and excitement, poured a glass of water. She approached him carefully. âAdie, drink some water.â
Adrian clumsily swatted the glass from her hand, sending water splashing across the sheets. The stain spread, but Rebecca didnât react with anger or frustration. Instead, she rested her head on his chest, her fingers tracing slow, delicate circles.
âAdie, let me be your woman. I can be better for you than Joelle ever was!â
But Adrian, lost in his drunken haze, only caught one word: Joelle. The name sparked something raw and painful in him. In a sudden burst of confusion and anger, he shoved Rebecca away, mistaking her for the woman who haunted his thoughts. âJoelle, what do you want?â
