With a dismissive roll of her eyes, Amara remarked, âItâs just a girl, nothing extraordinary. Keep her if thatâs your wish.â
Turning away from Amara, Belle smiled warmly as she took Joelleâs hand. âJoelle, can you believe it? I thought the Miller family might contest Auroraâs custody, but your ex-mother-in-lawâs unexpected generosity gives us peace of mind. Rafael will surely embrace Aurora as his own, so thereâs no need to worry.â
âThank you, Belle,â Joelle replied, her smile broadening. âRafael is destined to be a wonderful father; Iâm sure of it.â
âLetâs head over there, Mom,â Belleâs daughter, Liza Romero, said as she approached.
Joelle greeted her politely. âHello, Liza.â
âItâs been ages, Joelle.â Turning her attention to Rafael, Liza remarked, âRafael, you seem content with your new family, but itâs been three years. You should have visited Mom and Dad. Mom really missed you; she thought someone was preventing your return.â
Her words carried a hint of accusation as she glanced subtly at Joelle.
Offering a rueful smile, Rafael replied, âIâm here now, arenât I?â
âYes.â Liza took Belleâs arm. âMom, letâs walk over there.â Amara, watching the scene unfold, couldnât hide her discomfort.
âHey! Belle, are you sure about this? Joelle was rejected by the Miller family. Are you sure you want her as your daughter-in-law? And raising Adrianâs childâarenât you concerned about the talk it might stir up?â
gðªðµð·Ïvððµð¼.cøm â check it out!
The words hit Joelle hard. She had always been kind and fair to Amara, yet here was Amara, publicly accusing her. Belle was about to retort, but a look from Liza silenced her.
âMom, let Rafael and Joelle sort this out themselves.â While Belle was fond of Joelle, her feelings for Liza, whom she had raised from infancy, were stronger. Motivated by Lizaâs suggestion, she moved forward.
âMrs. Miller,â Rafael said, positioning himself protectively in front of Joelle. âBack in the day, Joelle was deemed suitable by Irene herself. Are you implying Irene made a poor decision by criticizing her?â
âAbsurd! She only got Adrian through underhanded tactics. Irene defended her just to save face! Rafael, why do you treat a woman we rejected like sheâs a gem?â
âYouââ Joelle was about to retort.
Rafael cut her off. âJoelle, we shouldnât waste our time arguing with them. Letâs move on.â
Amaraâs taunts echoed behind them. âA divorced woman flaunting herself publicly! Arenât you worried about being mocked?â
Once they were in the lounge, Belle, concerned Joelle might be hurt, took her hand. âJoelle, please ignore what Amara says. A divorce doesnât bother me. Look at Liza; sheâs been divorced too and is doing wonderfully.â
âAbsolutely, Joelle. Rafael adores you, and heâs got two kids already, doesnât he?â Liza added. Rafael nudged her, whispering, âLiza.â
Liza quickly corrected herself. âIâm sorry, Joelle. I didnât mean to put it that way.â
âItâs alright.â
Joelle appreciated that the Romero family was far more progressive than the Millers. The Romero family had long been a business dynasty, yet they wholeheartedly supported Rafaelâs pursuit of a medical career. Belle had been a supportive mother-in-law, publicly defending her just moments ago.
With such a supportive family, how could their relationship be anything but harmonious?
âIâm not going to let those words upset me.â Joelle offered a smile, her tension easing. âMy dad always told me that we should look forward, not back.â
âThatâs exactly right,â Belle responded, giving her hand a reassuring pat. âWhy donât you and Rafael set a date for the wedding? Itâs time you two settled down and started a family of your own.â
Liza set down her cup, maintaining her smile though her composure slipped slightly. Joelle held back her response, knowing the decision wasnât solely in her hands. They were officially married for the childrenâs sake, yet her bond with Rafael remained undefined.
He had suggested they proceed cautiously, leaving Joelle hesitant to push things forward, choosing instead to follow his lead.
Turning to Rafael, Belle inquired, âWhat are your thoughts, Rafael?â Liza expressed her concern, asking, âMom, donât you think itâs a bit too soon?â
âToo soon? A wedding would formalize things, wouldnât it? Then Amara wouldnât have grounds to complain!â Rafael remained composed as he answered, âMom, weâve got a plan in place. Thereâs no need for you to worry.â
Following the funeral, Rafael and Joelle headed home together. During the drive, Joelle noticed Rafaelâs mood had darkened ever since the wedding was brought up.
âRafael, if youâre not keen on a wedding right now, itâs okay. The ceremony isnât as important as our life together.â
At a red light, Rafael pressed the brake. âJoelle, Iâm sorry. There are just some things I need to work through.â
As the light turned green, he accelerated and added, âBut I promise, weâll have our wedding.â
Arriving home, they were greeted by the distant sound of laughter from the children. Joelle wondered if Gina was managing well with Aurora and Ryland.
