Over the weekend, Joelle and Rafael took their two children out for some fun. In front of the children, Joelle and Rafael presented themselves as a harmonious unit, embodying the idea of a happy family of four that Joelle cherished.
âJoelle?â
Upon hearing her name called, Joelle turned her attention away from the children. It was Lacey and Michael.
âItâs been a while.â Joelle gently pulled Aurora closer. âAurora, say hi to Michael and Lacey.â
âHello!â Aurora greeted cheerfully.
Lacey crouched down, smiling as she gently touched Auroraâs face. âSo pretty, looks just like Adrianâ¦â She quickly caught herself, realizing the inappropriateness of her comment, and abruptly stopped.
At that moment, Rafael returned, carrying Ryland, who had just had his diaper changed.
âRafael, itâs been a while.â
The air grew tense as the old friends exchanged greetings. Michael looked at him intently, as though trying to see through him.
Undisturbed, Rafael said, âRyland, say hello.â
âRafael, is this your and Joelleâs child?â Lacey asked, forcing a smile yet seeming shocked.
Joelle stood up and linked arms with Rafael. âYes, heâs our child.â
Michael, previously quiet, finally voiced his discontent. âRafael, how could you do this to Adrian?â
His expression had been gloomy from the start, and although Lacey attempted to restrain him, she was unsuccessful.
âWhat is this? Are you together now? Did you even consider Adrianâs feelings?â Michael added.
Aurora, feeling scared, hid behind Joelle.
Rafael stepped forward, his face marked by a stern coldness. âMichael, there are certain things that should not be discussed in front of the children. Joelle and I are together, and we have wronged no one.â
Michael locked eyes with him. âI canât believe you would do this! Joelle was Adrianâs exââ
âEnough!â Lacey interrupted, preventing Michael from finishing his thought. âJoelle, weâre leaving now!â With that, she quickly pulled Michael away.
âWhy are you so upset about other peopleâs lives?â she asked.
Michael balled his hands into fists. âI just canât stand seeing it. You know how Adrian has been for the past three years.â Compared to Rafael, Adrian appeared even more unfortunate. Joelle and Rafael enjoyed a happy family life, while Adrian was always alone.
Lacey placed her hands on her hips and said, âWell, itâs his fault he pushed his wife away.â
âCan you really blame Adrian? He was tricked into marrying someone he didnât love. Would you be content if you were in his position?â
âIf he wasnât content, he shouldnât have married in the first place! Once married, he should have steered clear of other women. Just look at him with Rebecca. No woman would tolerate that.â
Michael stood up for his friend and asked, âWhy are we bringing Rebecca into this? The Lloyd family helped the Miller family in the past. Adrian was merely repaying them.â
âWhy didnât he explain that earlier?â Lacey crossed her arms. âNow they have two kids; whatâs the use of saying all this now?â
âTrue.â Michael rubbed his head, growing more frustrated the more he thought about it.
âDonât obsess over it.â Lacey tugged at his sleeve. âCome on, if youâre concerned, then have a drink with Adrian!â
The family of four made their way back home, and the two little ones were so exhausted they fell asleep during the drive. Parents spend most of their time supervising their children, and they value the quiet moments when the children are asleep.
âYour right hand seems to have healed nicely,â said Rafael.
âWhy do you mention that all of a sudden?â
Rafael showed her his phone. It seemed a passerby had uploaded a video of her playing the violin at a promotional event a few days earlier. The person filming had a keen eye for detail, capturing the angles and lighting just right. Joelle hadnât expected the video to look so professional.
She was thrilled to be able to play the violin once again. Filled with happiness, she turned to Rafael with a look of deep gratitude. âRafael, thank you. I was close to giving up, but you encouraged me to keep up with the treatment.â
âWhy are you always so formal with me?â
Joelle felt slightly awkward after his comment, and Rafael patted her head. âIf you really want to thank someone, thank the Kovach Institute. They did an incredible job.â
âYes.â
As time passed, they found themselves having consumed half the bottle of wine, and Rafael initiated a new conversation. âIâve been thinking about what my mom suggested last time. We should start planning our wedding. Iâm ready to spend my life with you. Joelle, will you marry me?â
âOf course!â Joelleâs face beamed with joy as she clinked glasses with him. âMy brother will be returning from abroad soon. Letâs plan a dinner with him and your parents.â
With Austin still in a coma, Shawn remained as Joelleâs sole family connection.
âOkay.â
Suddenly, the doorbell echoed through the house. It was quite late. Who could it be?
Joelleâs expression soured from curiosity to coldness as soon as she saw Adrian. âWhat do you want?â
Adrian was smelling strongly of alcohol. âCanât I come to see my daughter?â
