âWhat seems to be the problem? Does grief consume you?â Michael asked.
Adrian handed the phone over. âCould you check this out for me?â
Displayed on the screen was a screenshot of the hospitalâs surveillance video. Joelle had mentioned she was taken to the rooftop, and the footage showed someone in a nurseâs outfit leading her there. Yet, the camera failed to capture the face clearly, which made identifying the person challenging.
Michael sighed when he heard this. âWhy does it appear that Joelle has faced constant trouble since her return?â Adrian was about to sip his drink but stopped upon hearing this. âMichael, could you investigate someone else for me?â
âWho is it?â
âThe person who vandalized Joelleâs studio earlier.â
âAbsolutely, Iâll handle it.â
Adrian took another sip of his strong drink. âMichael, I need to ask you something. Please be honest with me.â
âSure, whatâs on your mind?â
âWhatâs your opinion on Salome Lloyd?â
âSalome Lloyd?â Michael realized who Adrian was referring to. âOh, you mean Rebeccaâs mother? I havenât really had much interaction with her, so I canât say much.â
âIs that all?â
Michael paused to think, then sighed. âWell, I believe in a womanâs intuition about other women. Lacey doesnât like Salome or Rebecca. She has spoken quite negatively about them to me in private. Thereâs something about a womanâs sense when it comes to these things.â
Adrian looked confused. âWhatâs the issue with Salome?â
âSheâs so âgoodâ that you have to support her for the rest of your life!â
Michaelâs words hinted at something deeper, and Adrian felt their weight as he sipped his drink.
âSomething bothering you? Feeling a bit low?â Michael asked.
Adrian lit a cigarette, reclined on the sofa, and gazed at the ceiling. The vibrant lights overhead were stunning, yet he felt hollow inside.
âToday, Joelle told me that she didnât drug me back then.â
âHuh.â Michael filled his glass. âI suspected it was about Joelle. Youâve been drinking increasingly over these last two years because of her.â
âShe took my daughter and married my former best friend. Wouldnât that depress you if you were in my shoes?â
âAdrian, is your distress because sheâs with Rafael, or do you actually have feelings for Joelle?â
Adrianâs face twisted in disgust. âHave feelings for her? What sort of fantasy are you caught up in? Iâve always regarded her as a sister.â
âIf you say so.â Michaelâs voice dripped with sarcasm. âJust a sister, yet you two have a child together?â
Adrian was clearly annoyed. âIt was under my mom and grandmaâs insistence that I had a child with her.â Michael didnât pass judgment on Adrianâs character. âYou know the truth, so why the upset? If you never had feelings for Joelle, who sheâs with shouldnât bother you, right?â
âAnd what about the child?â
Adrianâs voice softened as he thought of Aurora. âThat child is my daughter, yet she calls Rafael âDaddy.â Every time she calls me âMr. Miller,â it feels like a punishment. Joelle and Rafael already have a son. Canât they let me have my daughter?â
Michael offered a comforting pat on the shoulder. âAdrian, you need to move on. Life doesnât always follow our plans.â
After a few drinks, Adrian felt the alcoholâs effects. He hid his face behind his hand, his voice rough from emotion. âIâve lost everything. My daughter is all that remains.â His soft words lingered in the midnight air.
On the other hand, Paula quickly changed out of her nurseâs uniform and rushed to the designated meeting spot.
Rebeccaâs expression was one of annoyance. âWhereâs Joelle? Did your plan work?â
âNo! She woke up unexpectedly, and Adrian arrived just in time. I had to flee! Next time you plan something this risky, handle it yourself! You might not fear death, but I cherish my life.â
âWhat are you saying? Adie was at the hospital too?â Rebecca struggled to maintain her composure, but it was slipping. If Adrian suspected anything, he might connect the dots back to her, jeopardizing her strategy to remain unseen. âDidnât you claim he had no feelings for Joelle? Why would he visit her so late?â
Paula began to doubt. Rebeccaâs assurances seemed less credible now. Contrary to Rebeccaâs claims, Adrian showed little regard for her but often visited Joelle. This was a stark contrast to what Rebecca had described. âDo you grasp the situation? Adie is solely focused on his child!â
âFine.â Paula tossed her hair back. âWhatever. Your issues are none of my concern. Iâm done helping you with your schemes.â
Rebecca narrowed her eyes. âWhat? Arenât you worried about Amaraâs reaction?â
âIf Amara targets me, I can always seek Adrianâs protection. Iâm merely a pawn he uses against Amara. However, if you threaten me, I can expose everything to Adrian. Who do you think would be more humiliated?â Paula had been working for Rebecca for some time and had finally gained leverage over her. She was confident that Rebecca would think twice before trying to control her again.
âPaula, youâre the most understanding. You wouldnât tell Adie, would you?â
âI stay out of the way of those who stay out of mine.â Paula gestured dismissively. âRebecca, when you marry into the Miller family, make sure I get an invitation!â
