Salomeâs eyes darted around nervously. When she caught Rebeccaâs gaze, she knew she had to decide quickly. âI remember nowâthere was one instance!â
Adrianâs expression remained unreadable as Salome continued, âAt that time, you were deeply involved in a dispute with your uncle and had been seriously injured. I thought it prudent to contact Ms. Watson. After all, you two had been married for three years. There must still be some lingering affectionâ¦â
Salomeâs voice faltered as she spoke, her words starting to sound hollow to her own ears. âAdrian, have I caused you trouble?â Her eyes reddened, and she slapped her own hand in frustration. âThis foolish hand of mine! Adrian, Iâm truly sorry!â
Rebecca, tears welling up, clung to Adrianâs arm. âAdie, my mom didnât mean any harm!â
Adrian glanced at her. âSo, you were aware of this too?â
âIâ¦â Rebecca stuttered, unable to form a coherent response. Adrian didnât need to say anything more. Simply standing up, he conveyed a silent but formidable presence that left both mother and daughter heart-thumpingly anxious.
âDonât cause any more trouble for Joelle. Thatâs where I draw the line. Joelle is the mother of my child, and I wonât allow anyone to harm her.â
Salome and Rebecca bowed their heads in shame. They braced for a reprimand, already rehearsing excuses. But Adrian remained silent. That silence, heavy and condemning, was more crushing than any scolding could have been. He regretted coming here.
He had always thought Salome was different from Erick or Rebecca, who clearly wanted something from him. Salome had seemed genuinely grateful, making him feel a real connection to the Lloyd family. After all, if not for her husband and eldest son, it could have been Adrian who met a tragic end years ago. But todayâs revelations showed that Salome was no different from the others.
In a final gesture of disconnection, Adrian slapped a bank card on the table and stood to leave. His visits had always been about supporting them, yet that seemed unappreciated now.
Rebecca, overcome with emotion, couldnât let him go without a word. With tears in her eyes, she ran after him. âAdie!â She caught up to him, breathless. âI love you!â
She didnât just want his pity. She loved him genuinely. She had immersed herself in his interestsâmusic, chess, calligraphy, paintingâstriving to become the educated, refined woman she thought he deserved, all to win his heart.
Adrian turned to face her as she approached. âAdie, canât you see me for who I am? I can do everything Joelle can. Weâve known each other for years. I understand you; I care for you deeply!â
âJoelle gave me a daughter. Can you offer me that?â Rebecca, summoning all her courage, stepped closer and lifted her gaze to his. âI can!â
Adrian sneered, âNice try. You and your mother cooked up this scheme together, didnât you?â
Rebecca froze, the earnest words she wanted to express stifled by his cold gaze. âAdie,â she murmured, managing a strained smile while her delicate frame shook slightly. âIâve started learning the violin. Maybe I could play for you next time?â
âNot interested, and there wonât be a next time.â Adrian climbed into his car, giving her a dismissive once-over. âThis style doesnât suit you. Stop trying to be like her.â With that, he drove off, leaving Rebecca alone and motionless in the parking lot.
She couldnât recall how she made it home, only that Salome greeted her with hopeful anticipation. âHow did it go? What did Adrian say?â
Rebeccaâs voice was a hollow whisper. âHeâs not coming back.â
âWhat? How could you let this happen? Weâve invested so much in you, and you canât even keep a man!â Salome exclaimed, her frustration evident as she pounded her leg. âHow did he find out?â
âHe wonât be coming backâ¦â
Rebeccaâs sudden outburst startled Salome. âItâs all Joelleâs fault! Adrian has abandoned me!â she shrieked, descending into a fit of hysteria as she began to smash everything within reach.
Her emotions erupted chaotically, her laughter mingling with sobs. âHe left us here in this dump and heâs never coming back! Joelle! Iâll kill you!â
Fearing for her own safety, Salome retreated behind the door. Meanwhile, Adrian received a troubling call from Michael. âI know whoâs behind the attempt on Joelle.â
âWho?â Adrianâs voice was tense.
âI reviewed all the surveillance footage around the hospital,â Michael explained. âOne camera got a clear shot of Paulaâs face. She was seen fleeing the hospital in a panic the night Joelle had her accident.â
Adrian furrowed his brow, deep in thought. Paula had always been motivated by money, and heâd kept her close primarily to irritate Amara. But would she go as far as harming someone? He doubted it.
âAre you certain it was her?â
Michaelâs response was firm. âThereâs more. The man who vandalized Joelleâs studio had a recent payment from Paulaâs account in his records. He confessed that Paula hired him for the job.â
Confronted with both testimony and evidence, Adrian had to accept the truth. âBut something doesnât add up,â Michael added.
âWhatâs that?â
âPaula vanished right after the incidents came to light. Itâs like sheâs trying to escape.â
âFind her. No matter what it takes.â
âUnderstood.â
