For the past several days, Joelle had been unable to focus, with thoughts of Adrian stirring her emotions. Over the weekend, Gina offered to watch the children, giving Joelle and Rafael a rare break. However, their relief was short-lived when Ginaâs call interrupted their day.
âJoelle⦠Iâm so sorry!â
Joelle could hear Gina sobbing uncontrollably, which immediately set off alarm bells in her mind.
âGina, what happened?â
âAurora and Ryland wanted to play in the community garden, and I took them there. But then Ryland needed his diaper changed, and just after I turned away for a moment, Aurora disappeared! It happened in just seconds!â
Joelleâs heart sank into panic. âHow could she just vanish?â Rafael quickly put the phone on speaker.
âIâm so sorry! I donât know what to do. Joelle, Iâm truly sorry.â
Frozen in place, Joelle could only repeat her daughterâs name in disbelief. âAurora⦠Aurora.â
Through her tears, Gina continued, âIâm really sorry, Joelle. It was an accident!â
Joelle attempted to reassure both herself and Gina, clinging to a thread of hope. âThree-year-olds do tend to wander. Itâs a society governed by laws. We will find Aurora.â
But inwardly, Joelle felt her confidence waver. âHave you contacted the police?â
Gina sniffled loudly. âYes, I have!â
Rafael took the phone from Joelle. âOkay, letâs gather and review the surveillance footage. Iâm sure weâll locate her soon.â
After ending the call, Joelleâs hand began to shake uncontrollably.
g Ɐ ln Ï Î½ð ðsâ¤com, your fiction escape âRafael⦠Rafael, what if something has happened to her? Aurora!â
Her eyes blurred with tears, and panic clouded her thoughts. Memories of various news stories involving missing children flashed through her mind, each one a sharp jab of fear.
âJoelle, we need to stay calm,â Rafael urged.
They hurried to the police station and requested access to the communityâs surveillance tapes. The footage quickly fast-forwarded to the moment of Auroraâs disappearance. Joelle watched the screen without blinking, her eyes searching desperately for any clue.
The footage showed Gina attending to Rylandâs diaper while Aurora played in the sand nearby. Everything seemed normal until a woman appeared and waved at Aurora. The little girl looked up to call Gina, but Gina was too engrossed to notice.
Joelleâs heart stopped as she recognized the woman approaching her daughter. It was an image she could never erase from her memoryâRebecca.
Rebecca approached Aurora and waved her hand in front of the childâs face. Aurora then lost consciousness.
Watching this unfold on the video, Joelleâs fury surged, and she immediately dialed Adrian.
âAdrian! Where has your woman taken Aurora?â
âWhat? What happened to Aurora?â Adrianâs voice was filled with confusion and concern.
Rafael, ever the steadying presence, took the phone from Joelle. âAdrian, itâs Rebecca. She took Aurora.â
There was a pause on the line as Adrian processed this information. âRebecca left Illerith.â
Rafael glanced at the timestamp on the surveillance footage. âThatâs not possible. She was here just two hours ago.â
Adrian was alarmed. After all, Aurora was his daughter. âIâll find out whatâs going on and call you back!â He tried calling Rebecca multiple times as he left the building, but she didnât answer.
Panicking, he then called Salome, who answered almost immediately.
âWhere is Rebecca?â he demanded.
âI donât know. She drugged me with sleeping pills at the train station. I donât know where she went after that.â
Sleeping pills? Adrian had no time to ponder. He rushed over to Joelleâs place.
As soon as he arrived, Joelle, driven by desperation, rushed up to him and grabbed him by the collar. âWhere is Aurora? Adrian, did you conspire with Rebecca to take her?â
Adrian steadied her by the shoulders. âJoelle, I swear, I didnât know about any of this.â
Joelle, barely holding herself together, retorted sharply, âIf Aurora returns with even a scratch, your beloved will pay dearly for it. I donât care how important she is to you!â
Adrian frowned, attempting to pacify her. âCalm down. Rebecca would never hurt Aurora.â
Joelle, who had just taken a seat, stood up again, her voice laced with scorn. âShe wouldnât harm Aurora? Her patience was fraying. Sheâs a liar! A murderer! What wouldnât she do? Adrian, you need to see the truth!â
âWhat do you mean?â
Rafael interjected, âWeâre not trying to create conflict between you and Rebecca, but there are things you need to hear. Kendal has been monitoring Rebeccaâs illness, correct? Three years ago, he claimed there was an institute abroad that could cure her severe brain condition. You flew her out and she was gone for over a year. When she returned, she told you she was cured, right?â
Adrian, growing impatient, pressed, âWhat are you getting at?â
âDo you recall the name of the institute Kendal mentioned?â
âKovach Institute.â
âThe Kovach Institute only has three branches globally. Iâve worked at one for the past three years. When I heard Rebecca was treated there, I spoke to Kovach. He confirmed that none of the branches ever treated someone matching her description. Rebecca was never sick.â
