Joelle remained silent, her gaze fixed intently on Rafael. âAlright, I was wrong.â Rafael apologized. âAurora wouldnât lie, and I know Liza meant no harm.â
âI know she didnât mean any harm,â Joelle murmured. âBut itâs odd, donât you think? Lately, sheâs been visiting us alone, always avoiding me when she discusses things with you. And frankly, itâs unsettling to find her in our room.â
Rafael considered her words carefully, opting not to share that his parents disapproved of Joelle, fearing it might hurt her. Instead, he attempted to paint Liza in a more sympathetic light.
âLiza is probably just concerned about how weâre doing. Sheâs always been the type to worry, constantly involving herself in my life since we were kids.â He pulled Joelle into his arms, creating a comforting embrace where they could discuss anything openly without resentment.
âJoelle, thereâs something you should know about Liza. Sheâs had it tough.â
He spoke gently, holding her close. âYears ago, when our father was in trouble, she married a man she didnât love just to help him through the crisis. Itâs been tough on her.â
Joelle, who had only heard snippets of this story, listened more intently. âThen what happened?â
âAfter the financial crisis was resolved, she gathered enough strength to ask for a divorce. But the ordeal left her somewhat paranoid. Donât hold it against her. Sheâs been through a lot.â He kissed Joelleâs hair in a comforting gesture.
âI understand,â Joelle replied, her earlier resentment dissolving into a deep sense of compassion upon hearing about Lizaâs struggles.
In the days that followed, while Adrian was away on a business trip, Gina kept him updated with photos and videos of Aurora. Only after completing his work could he finally sit down to go through them.
In every video, Aurora was beautifully dressed, often with Joelle appearing in the background. Each sighting of Joelle made Adrianâs smile falter momentarily, prompting him to light a cigarette out of habit.
As he scrolled through the many videos, one in particular caught his eyeâit seemed out of place. He clicked on it, and his pupils dilated in shock. It appeared to be a snippet from a different video entirely. Gina must have sent it by accident.
gⱯlnÏνð®âsâ¤cøm is a world of wonder The initial sounds from the video were unmistakably inappropriate, and Adrian cranked up the volume to be sure of what he was hearing. He was relieved to be alone. Anyone elseâs presence would have made the situation exceedingly awkward.
Realizing her error, Gina quickly removed the video from the message thread. âSorry, Mr. Miller. I accidentally sent a video that wasnât meant to be shared.â
Adrian responded simply, âNo worries.â
Gina quickly followed up, her message tinged with concern. âMr. Miller, you didnât watch it, did you?â Adrian replied with straightforward honesty, âI did.â
A string of embarrassed blushing emojis came from Gina. âIt was from a friendâs collection. Iâm really sorry about that.â
Adrian chose not to respond further. He set his phone aside and headed for the shower to clear his head. After refreshing himself, Adrian returned to find several new messages from Gina. âMr. Miller, are you still awake? If you find some time, could you please visit Aurora? Sheâs been missing you.â
âGood night, Mr. Miller.â
He chose not to respond to any of them.
Two days later, as Adrian returned to Illerith, he unexpectedly encountered Gina at the airport. âMr. Miller, what a coincidence!â
Adrian gave her a brief, indifferent glance. âDo you need something?â
âIâm actually here to pick up a friend, not you,â Gina clarified, waving towards a young woman approaching from a distance.
Adrianâs expression softened slightly, realizing his assumption was off. He turned away just as Callan arrived to pick him up. Once in the car, Adrian checked his phone and saw a message from Gina. âMr. Miller, could I possibly get a ride? My car just broke down.â
Shortly after, Gina and her friend joined him in the car. Gina thanked him with a bright smile. âThank you so much for this.â
Adrian merely stared out the window, offering no response.
Ginaâs friend, attempting to make conversation, chimed in, âGina, is this your handsome boyfriend?â
âNo!â Gina responded quickly. âThis is my boss.â
Her friend nodded. âOh, I see. Your boss is really nice to you.â
Gina offered a shy smile and tried to gauge Adrianâs reaction, relieved to see he wasnât visibly annoyed.
As they arrived at Ginaâs destination, Adrian finally broke his silence. âGina, thereâs something you could help me with.â
Gina brushed her hair behind her ear, attentive. âOf course, what do you need?â
âIâve brought back some gifts for Aurora and Ryland. Could you pass them on?â
Ginaâs friend, curious, interjected, âWho are Aurora and Ryland?â
âMy ex-wifeâs children,â Adrian responded, his voice cool.
âOkay,â her friend uttered with a frown, as she looked at Gina.
