Rafael was deeply worried about his parents giving Joelle a hard time.
âJoelle, have my parents said anything odd to you?â he asked.
âNot at all. What could they even say?â
Rafael hesitated. âThey didnât make things difficult for you, did they?â
âWhat kind of question is that?â Joelle chuckled, brushing off his concern. âWhy would they make things difficult for me? Iâm charming, gentle, and I brought two adorable little treasures with me.â
Despite her lightheartedness, Rafael wasnât convinced. âIâll come get you now.â
Joelle glanced at the clock and realized the hour was indeed late. âAlright, see you soon.â
After ending the call, she turned, only to find herself face-to-face with Liza, who was descending the stairs. They shared a quick smile before Liza broke the silence.
âJoelle, could you help me with something?â
âSure, whatâs up?â
Liza produced a jade bracelet from her pocket, holding it out with a casual gesture. âA friend gave this to me. I was hoping you could tell me if itâs worth anything.â Joelle smiled, though a touch of amusement crossed her features. âLiza, youâre asking the wrong person. I donât know much about jewelry.â
âItâs fine, just take a look.â Liza gently tugged Joelle into the living room, where Aurora and Ryland were deeply engrossed in their toy cars.
They sat down, and Joelle tilted the bracelet under the chandelierâs glow, examining it as best she could. While she wasnât an expert, she had seen enough high-end pieces in her social circles to recognize the difference between quality and mediocrity.
And that was one inferior piece.
âLiza, where did you get this?â
Liza let out a sigh. âItâs from my ex-husband.â
Joelle handed the bracelet back with a sympathetic smile. âHonestly, it doesnât seem to be worth much. He mightâve been swindled.â
âMaybe he wasnât tricked at all. Maybe he knew exactly what he was giving meâa cheap bracelet for someone he didnât value.â
Joelle gently placed a hand on Lizaâs. âDonât dwell on it too much. The past is behind you, and trust me, youâre going to find someone who treats you the way you deserve.â
âI hope so.â
Aurora, catching sight of the bracelet, bounded over. âCan I wear that for a bit?â
âOf course, sweetheart.â
Since the bracelet wasnât worth much, no one was particularly worried about it. As the conversation continued, Aurora proudly displayed her new accessory to Ryland.
But moments later, a sharp crack echoed through the room. Joelle shot up from her seat, her heart leaping into her throat. She rushed to the children, quickly taking them away from the potentially dangerous shards.
Hearing the commotion, Belle emerged from another room. âWhat happened here?â
Lizaâs face went pale. âMom, the bracelet⦠It broke!â
âHow did that happen?â
Joelle, with anxiety, turned to Aurora, asking if she was okay.
Aurora shook her head. âMom, I broke the bracelet by mistake. Iâm sorry!â
âItâs okay, love. Iâll make it right with Liza, donât worry. Iâll get her something even better.â
Belle, her face twisted with fury, slapped Joelle hard across the face.
The slap echoed through the room, leaving both Joelle and Aurora frozen in shock. Auroraâs lips quivered, and within seconds, she burst into tears.
Joelle, hand against her stinging cheek, slowly rose to her feet. âBelle, what did I do to deserve this?â
Belleâs fury wasnât just about the bracelet; it was the weight of its sentiment, its history, and Joelleâs seemingly casual offer to replace it that left her speechless with anger.
âGet out! I donât need a daughter-in-law like you!â Joelle was shoved backward, nearly stumbling as she tried to keep her balance, her children clinging to her. Her mind reeled, still grappling with the shock of Belleâs actions.
Summoning her strength, Joelle grabbed Belleâs wrist. âBelle, Iâve always respected you as Rafaelâs mother, but Iâm a mother too. You slapped me in front of my children. Did you even stop to think about the damage that could cause them? I donât understand what Iâve done to wrong you, but this? This was uncalled for!â
Joelleâs unwavering stance only seemed to fan the flames of Belleâs anger. Belleâs chest heaved, her hand clutching at her heart, struggling to catch her breath. âHow dare you speak to me like this? You donât even knowââ
âMom!â Liza rushed in, her hands hovering protectively over Belle. âLetâs go to your room. Iâll get your medicine.â
About ten minutes later, Rafael arrived.
Aurora clung to his leg, tears streaming down her face. âDaddy, Grandma hit Mommy!â
Rafaelâs worst fears were realized in an instant. He rushed to Joelleâs side. âJoelle?â
Joelle, never having faced such treatment before, looked away, her eyes red with unshed tears. The clear imprint of a hand was evident on her face.
Without uttering a word, Rafael grabbed Joelleâs wrist and told her, âLetâs go. I need to get an explanation!â He stormed into Belleâs room, where she had just taken her medication and was now resting.
Liza tried to block him, saying, âMom is resting. Stop making a scene.â
âMaking a scene? Why did she hit Joelle?â
Liza hesitated before speaking. âThis is partly my fault. Iâm sorry, Joelle.â
Rafael frowned. âWhat do you mean?â
âMom asked me to give Joelle the bracelet Grandma passed down. I was hesitant to give it to her, fearing it might make her uncomfortable. So, I showed her the one my ex-husband gave me first, planning to surprise her later. Aurora accidentally broke that one, and Mom thought⦠She just acted on impulse! Joelle, please donât take it personally!â
