âPlease come back, Rafael! I swear, if Iâm lying to you, Iâll meet a terrible end!â Belle cried. This was a critical moment. Even if there was a chance it wasnât true, Rafael had to believe it. Belleâs desperate scream made Rafael feel like he was sinking into the oceanâs depths, suffocating and unable to draw breath. A loud ringing filled his ears as he bolted outside. Joelle tried to stop him but couldnât.
When Rafael reached the hospital, Humphrey had already passed away. Belle was pounding on Humphreyâs chest, her actions rough, not at all how one would treat a sick person. Liza was on her knees nearby, weeping bitterly. The doctor, who had been overseeing Humphreyâs health, sadly shook his head.
If this whole scene was orchestrated to make Rafael accept Lizaâs unborn child, then it was a bit over the top. âWhatâs wrong with my dad?â Rafael didnât notice how shaky his voice was until he spoke.
The doctor replied, âYour father suffered a heart attack. There was nothing we could do to save him.â
Just then, a cry from Belle filled the room. âHumphrey! Why have you left me all alone?â
Rafael seized the doctor by the collar. He knew it wasnât right, but this situation was too cruel. âWhat do you mean? My father was healthy! I saw his medical report just last month! Everything was perfect! How can this be?â
âRafael.â The doctor took Rafaelâs hand. âYouâre a doctor too. You understand that life is full of unforeseen events.â
âI canât believe this.â Tears reddened Rafaelâs eyes. âI canât believe this.â His voice grew louder with each utterance. âI canât believe this!â
He hurried to Humphreyâs bedside, now despising his own profession. If he werenât a doctor, he wouldnât have that internal voice urging him to face realityâto accept that his father was gone. Seeing Humphreyâs closed eyes and blue lips, Rafael knew this was no deception. He collapsed to his knees beside the bed.
Belle clutched her son, sobbing uncontrollably. âRafael, our family is falling apart!â She cursed their cruel fate, her sorrow manifesting as feeble punches on Rafaelâs chest.
Rafael fought back tears and grasped Belleâs arm. âMom, that wonât happen. We wonât fall apart.â
Belle wept and shook her head, overwhelmed by sorrow. Rafael reassured her with gentle firmness. âIâm still here.â
That day, a vehicle from the funeral home took Humphreyâs body from the hospital. Everything happened so fast that Rafael didnât get a chance to tell Joelle. It was Shawn who learned of Humphreyâs death from others.
âHow could this happen so suddenly?â Joelle was taken aback.
Shawn sighed and said, âLife is full of surprises. Itâs best to let go.â
Joelleâs face showed her concern. âI can let go. I just worry about Rafael.â
âMy silly sister.â Shawn comforted her with a pat on the shoulder. âDo you remember Dadâs and Momâs accidents? Give him time. Heâll get through this.â
Joelle responded, âI understand.â
Rafael hadnât been home in three days, nor had he slept. His thoughts kept returning to his last encounter with Humphrey. They had parted on bad terms, full of anger. Reflecting on his childhood, Rafael realized that Humphrey hadnât always been harsh or unreasonable. There were good times, yet it was only now that Rafael recognized them.
With this realization, fresh tears streamed down his tired face. Liza reached out to wipe his tears, but he pushed her away harshly. A fall could be dangerous for a pregnant woman. Liza winced in pain, yet Rafael remained unmoved, not even looking her way.
âRafael, I know youâre hurting. Talk to me if youâre upset. Donât keep it all inside.â
Rafael replied coldly, âLeave.â
âRafaelâ¦â
âGet out!â
With a heavy heart, Liza dried her own tears and walked away.
Three days later, they laid Humphrey to rest. His burial took place in the cemetery. It was a stormy day, with everything cloaked in shades of black and gray. Rafael stood at the forefront, paying his respects before Humphreyâs photograph on the tombstone.
Joelle and Shawn stood nearby, offering their final goodbyes to Humphrey along with others. Once the ceremony concluded, the crowd thinned. Overcome with sadness for Rafael, Joelle broke down in tears.
In the dispersing crowd, her gaze inadvertently met Adrianâs. It seemed he had been watching her the entire time. Joelle was taken aback. She lowered her head and said to Shawn, âLetâs go, Shawn.â
Shawn questioned, âArenât you going to say hello to Rafael?â
Joelle shook her head and replied, âHe must be very busy right now. I donât want to disturb him.â
Shawn also noticed Adrian and felt it wasnât the right moment to approach him. âYouâre right.â He positioned the black umbrella over them and turned to leave with Joelle. âWe should visit Mom.â Their mother was also laid to rest in the same cemetery.
