Joelle felt a stir of discomfort. She knew all too well that Adrian was naturally a reserved individual. It looked like he was trying to make up for past mistakes. Yet, the more considerate Adrian was, the more Joelleâs feelings became mixed. Her previous experiences reminded her that it was pointless to spend more time on Adrian after already giving him eight years. The awkward silence between them lingered until Shawn and Callan showed up, easing the tension. Subsequently, they were all taken to the police station to give their statements.
Upon hearing of Ginaâs arrest, Leo waited an hour before telling Jonathan. That hour allowed the police to firm up the charges against Gina. Even if Jonathan wanted to shield Gina, it would now be significantly harder to do so openly. Leo genuinely did not wish to see Jonathanâs downfall because of Gina. Even though Jonathan might feel obligated to repay Gina for saving his life years ago, he shouldnât continue to protect her without any limits or principles.
After receiving the news, Jonathan responded calmly, âGo to her place and bring back that cat. If nobody looks after it, it will starve.â Leo followed the instructions and retrieved the cat. The cat seemed quite intuitive, bonding only with Jonathan, snuggling in his arms and occasionally purring contentedly.
As he petted the cat, Jonathan said slowly, âLeo, didnât I instruct you to watch over her and keep her out of trouble at all costs?â Realizing he could no longer conceal his actions, Leo bowed his head and apologized, âJonathan, I made that call myself. Please, punish me!â Jonathan glanced at him sideways. âPunish you? Do you really think you did something wrong?â
Without hesitation, Leo replied, âNo, I donât regret it.â Facing Jonathanâs cold and arrogant gaze, he lowered his head again. Despite his primary duty to obey Jonathanâs commands, he acknowledged this time he had not fulfilled his responsibilities. Jonathan said, âIf you say you donât regret it, then whatâs the point of punishment?â
Leo stepped closer. âJonathan, I apologize! I wonât make decisions on my own again!â
âLet it go,â Jonathan responded, setting the cat down to roam freely. âVisit her and see if she needs anything else, as part of my debt repayment for saving my life. Once thatâs settled, I should head back home.â
âOkay.â
Soon after, Leo went to the police station and conveyed Ginaâs message back to Jonathan. At that time, Jonathan was lounging on the bed with a blonde woman nestled against him. When Leoâs call came through, Jonathan sat up, pushing the woman away as she tried to hold on to him. He walked barefoot to the window and drew back the curtains. The sunlight was bright, and he was completely naked.
âJoelle Watson?â
âYes, Gina mentioned she wants you to eliminate Joelle for her,â Leo said.
âIs that it?â
âThatâs all,â Leo said. âJonathan, are you actually considering fulfilling her request?â
Jonathan asked, âIs there a problem?â
Leo hesitated before admitting, âJonathan, pardon my directness, but I believe we shouldnât indulge Ginaâs delusions.â Jonathan answered indifferently, âShe just wants one life, thatâs all. Leo, youâre being overly anxious.â
âButââ
Jonathanâs gaze grew stern. âNo buts. Every day, countless people vanish without a trace. The police canât keep up.â
Three days had passed since the incident at sea. While practicing her violin, Joelle got a call from Shawn. âDid you hear that Adrian has been down with a severe fever for three days?â Joelle was genuinely surprised. âHas he visited a doctor?â Shawn scoffed, âHeâs been home, refusing to go. The fever hasnât subsided at all; itâs like heâs trying to end it all by himself.â Joelle sensed an underlying message in Shawnâs tone.
âShawn, should I go visit him?â Shawn sighed. âIâve been so anxious these last few days, hardly sleeping, constantly thinking. Adrian didnât just save your life; he also helped us catch Gina. Shouldnât we repay such a significant debt quickly?â Joelle hesitated, then admitted Shawnâs point made sense. âOkay, I understand. Iâll visit him.â
That same day, Joelle arrived at Adrianâs house with several gifts. âMs. Watson!â Leah brightened upon seeing Joelle. âAre you here to see Mr. Miller?â
âYes.â
In the past, Joelle had always tended to Adrian when he was ill. Some habits die hard; despite years apart, she remembered how to care for him. âI brought ingredients for soup. Could you prepare it?â
âOf course!â Leah sighed with relief. âIâm so glad youâre here. Mr. Miller wouldnât listen to me, but with you here, heâs sure to take his medicine.â Joelle remained silent.
Leah opened the shoe cabinet, and Joelle noticed that her old slippers were still there.
