âAurora! Where are you?â Joelle asked.
Aurora scanned her surroundings. âMom, weâre in the car!â Joelle tried to keep her voice steady, not wanting to alarm her daughter. âAurora.â
Her voice wavered, something Adrian picked up on right away. He took the phone from her. âAurora, itâs Uncle Adrian speaking.â
âMr. Miller, this is Dunn Finch speaking.â Dunnâs even tone helped soothe Adrian a bit.
âDunn, what are you doing in the car?â
Ryland looked towards Lara, who was at the wheel. âWe were playing at the wedding venue when a woman told us sheâd take Aurora and Ryland to the amusement park. I decided to tag along.â
Dunn, only five and from the Finch family, had been taught to be clever and vigilant.
Adrian visualized the scenario. Dunn likely hadnât had a chance to alert his family before he chose to follow and look out for Aurora and Ryland, worried about their safety.
âDunn, can you tell me where you are right now?â
Dunn, still learning to read many words, simply described what he saw outside the window. âI see a mall, and thereâs a tall, pointy building in front of itââ He was cut off as Lara snatched the phone.
âShut up, you little brat!â Dunn didnât resist, understanding his importance, as well as the value of Aurora and Ryland to the Miller, Watson, and Romero families. It was clear no sane person would risk harming them.
He figured this woman wasnât very smart; otherwise, she wouldnât have been so foolish as to target the three of them.
Adrianâs voice came stern and urgent through the phone. âLara, you better make sure nothing happens to them. If even a single hair on their heads is harmed, I wonât let it slide.â
âThereâs no need to overreact. I was merely having a bit of fun with the kids. If youâre that concerned, you and Joelle should come get them yourselves. But just the two of you.â
Adrian tried to discern her motives, but Joelle was past worrying about Laraâs intentions.
âWhere are you? Weâll come right now! Lara, please, donât harm the children!â
âIâll text you the location in thirty minutes.â Lara ended the call abruptly. When Joelle attempted to redial, she found that Laraâs phone was already switched off.
Adrian reassured her with a comforting hand on her back. âStay calm, letâs get in touch with Jonathan first. He might be able to reach Lara before we can.â
Lacey also chimed in, trying to soothe her. âJoelle, try not to panic. Weâll get the kids back safe and sound.â
Gradually, Joelle steadied herself, took several deep breaths, and dialed Jonathanâs number.
Meanwhile, Lara turned off her phone with a scoff, casually tossing it out the window.
The car left the bustling city behind, heading towards a more secluded area.
Auroraâs eyes widened with fear as she stared at Lara.
She clutched Dunnâs arm tightly. âDunn, Iâm scared.â
âItâs okay,â Dunn reassured her, patting her head gently. âIâll protect you.â
Just then, Ryland, who had been dozing fitfully, began to cry loudly, and soon a foul odor filled the car.
Lara, driving, pinched her nose and glanced back repeatedly. âDid he poop? Why does it smell so terrible?â
Aurora clenched her fist, upset. âDonât say that about my brother!â
Dunn, also covering his nose, suggested calmly, âYou should pull over. If he keeps crying, it might draw attention. You wouldnât want anyone to find out youâre kidnapping kids, right?â
Reluctantly, Lara realized she had to stop; the smell was becoming unbearable.
Left with no option, she slowed the car and parked in front of a grocery store.
She handed some cash to Dunn. âGo inside and get some diapers and wet wipes.â
As Ryland reached out to take the money, Lara withdrew her hand sharply. âBehave yourself. If you try anything or scream for help, Iâll make sure you regret it!â
Dunnâs face remained impassive. âEven if I did ask for help, who would believe a kid like me?â
âSmart kid,â Lara said, finally handing him the money.
Dunn exited the car quickly and dashed into the supermarket. Left behind with nothing else to do, Lara turned her attention to Aurora.
Aurora clung to Ryland protectively. âYou bad woman, what do you plan to do with me and my brother?â
âWho taught you to speak to adults like that? You have no manners.â
âPeople like you donât deserve respect! Iâll have you know, my dad is a doctor. If you hurt us, heâll make sure your treatment is very painful!â
âYour dad is a doctor?â Lara chuckled dismissively. âLittle girl, have you ever looked in the mirror? You look just like Adrian. Donât you see who your real father is?â
Aurora paused for a moment, then stood up defiantly, saying, âYouâre lying! Evil woman! I am my dadâs daughter!â
âSit down, you little brat!â
