Joelle went with Adrian to the hospital to get his hand treated and also arranged for a thorough checkup for the three children. Luckily, the kids were only slightly shaken and unharmed. Adrianâs injury was more severe; he required three stitches for a deep cut on his hand.
The doctor sewed him up without any anesthesia, and Joelle watched from a distance.
She felt a twinge of pain just from seeing the needle penetrate Adrianâs skin, but he didnât even flinch.
Looking up, Joelle noticed Adrian had been watching her intently the whole time.
He had the expectant look of a dog awaiting a treat.
Of course, Joelle kept these thoughts to herself, never daring to voice them to Adrian.
Fortunately, a phone call interrupted the uncomfortable moment. She stepped away to answer. âHello?â âJoelleâ¦â The voice on the other end was weak.
âJonathan?â
A mocking chuckle followed from the other end. âYou were right. Those who deceive often face dire consequences.â Joelle sensed trouble and felt a surge of dread. âWhat happened to you?â
âDonât worry, Iâm not dying.â Jonathan breathed heavily, resting his head against a wall and gazing tiredly at the sky. âBut that might change soon.â His voice carried a resigned acceptance of his fate.
Joelle flashed back to the time she had saved Jonathan. âAre you alright?â she asked.
âIâm not going to die just yet.â Jonathan held his stomach, looked at his bloodied hand, and scoffed. âBut that could change shortly.â
He was someone she had once saved, but now, he was on the brink of dying again. âWhereâs Leo?â she asked.
âGone.â
Joelle was startled. âAnd Lara?â
âGone, too.â
Joelle gasped, covering her mouth in horror. Just half an hour before, Leo and Lara were still alive.
Jonathan groaned in agony. âJoelle, are you coming to save me or not? You think I called to say goodbye?â
âIâm on my way!â she replied.
âDonât call the police or an ambulance. Iâve been shot, and I canât handle their questions right now.â
âOkay, okay,â Joelle repeated affirmatively without hesitation and rushed out.
âHey, hey!â Adrian saw her rushing and quickly followed, ignoring the doctor.
âJoelle! Whatâs happening?â
Joelle, in a panic, explained, âJonathanâs in danger. I have to save him or he might not make it!â
âDo you care that much about him?â Adrian tightened his grip on her wrist, his expression darkening.
âItâs a matter of life and death!â Joelle clutched his arm back. âAre you really getting jealous now? He reached out to me; I canât just ignore that.â
Adrian held back his annoyance. âGot it. Iâll send Callan. Itâs too risky for you to go.â
âOkay.â Joelle looked at his incomplete stitches and felt a twinge of guilt.
âI got carried away earlier. Iâll stay until youâre all stitched up.â
Adrian wasnât concerned about his minor injury anymore. âJoelle, who are you more worried about, me or him?â
Joelle was frustrated. Why was Adrian being so petty right now? The doctor interrupted, saying, âAhem! Sir, should I finish stitching your wound before you carry on with your conversation?â
Adrian gripped Joelleâs hand firmly, his gaze locked on hers. âDonât go anywhere. I have a lot to tell you.â
Joelle persuaded him to finish getting his stitches first. âOkay, Iâll stay.â
The doctor internally rolled his eyes. Working under these circumstances was challenging enough.
Elsewhere, Aurora and Ryland were under Dunn and Gracieâs watchful eyes.
Aurora was content as long as Dunn kept her entertained. Fred held Ryland, letting Gracie play with his little hands.
âHoney, should we think about having another child for Dunn?â Gracie asked.
âDo you remember? After your touch delivery, I went straight for a vasectomy.â
âOh, thatâs right, youâre always so thoughtful.
âWhy do we need another baby of our own? Weâve already got a perfect little family.â Fred motioned towards Dunn and Aurora cuddling nearby.
Gracieâs heart warmed instantly. âDunn, what are you whispering about with her?â
âNothing,â Dunn said, subtly pulling Aurora a bit aside. âAurora, donât you want to find out who your father is?â
âDunn, do you have a way?â
Dunn nodded and opened his small hand. âI snagged a hair from Adrian when he wasnât paying attention. With this, we can find out what your relationship with him is.â Aurora was impressed. âDunn, youâre brilliant!â
âNow, give me some of your hair.â
Aurora pulled out some of her hair and handed it over to Dunn, who carefully stored it. âIâll get an adult to help us with a test, and Iâll let you know the results on Monday when weâre at kindergarten.â âThanks, Dunn!â
When Dunn and Aurora rejoined the group, Gracie and Dunn were already discussing taking Aurora in as their daughter. âDunn, how about making Aurora your sister?â
Dunn climbed onto a chair confidently. âResearch suggests that an only child tends to be more successful and well-rounded. Considering your enthusiasm and intelligence, just raising me seems quite the challenge already.â
