Lacey didnât intervene.
As Joelle headed back to the hotel, she went over their travel plans with Katherine, who had given up on meeting the influential businessman sheâd been waiting for.
That afternoon, they arrived at the airport. Adrian called Joelle once, but she didnât respond.
A few days later, Joelle, fresh from teaching Josiah and laden with groceries, found Adrian dressed in black at her doorstep. âMr. Miller, what can I do for you?â
âWhy did you leave without saying goodbye?â
The image of Rebecca in Italy was still vivid in Joelleâs mind. She had thought that going abroad might lessen her impact, but Rebeccaâs presence only confirmed she would always be a wedge in Joelleâs relationship with Adrian.
âAdrian, Iâm finished with these games, alright? If itâs fun youâre after, there are plenty of women eager for your attention. Please, leave me out of it. Iâm not playing anymore.â
She reached for her keys, but Adrian grabbed her shoulder. âDo you think marriage is a game? Why go through all that trouble to be with me if you werenât serious?â
âBecause I needed the money,â Joelle fired back, holding his gaze. âCanât you see? My brother was desperately trying to keep the Watson family from collapsing. We were teetering on the edge. I needed stability, assurance I wouldnât be left destitute. Marrying you was that assurance.â
Adrian narrowed his eyes. âSo, you acknowledge it then.â
âYes,â Joelle responded, her tone defiant.
Feel the thrill at g aln ov el s . com In a flare of anger, Adrian pushed her against the door. The plastic bag slipped from her grip, sending apples and potatoes rolling down the stairs. âWhat I despise most is being deceived, Joelle.â
Joelle flinched, sweat forming on her brow. âThen why havenât you divorced me? If we separate, weâll both be free.â
Suddenly, Adrian released her. His anger vanished, leaving his expression cold and his demeanor controlled, yet barely concealing the turmoil inside. âTomorrow, you will accompany me back to visit Grandma.â
âI refuse.â Her desire to sever ties with the Miller family was firm, making their expectations irrelevant to her.
âItâs not your choice. Even for a divorce, we need Grandmaâs approval.â Before turning to leave, Adrian fixed a stern gaze on her. âJoelle, youâre not the only one unhappy. Believe me, Iâm even more eager for this divorce than you.â
The next day, Joelle and Adrian entered the Miller Mansion together. As they entered, Katie walked past them, yawning. âAh, Joelle, youâre hereâperfect timing! Iâve been craving those cookies you make. Mind baking a batch?â
Joelle straightened up, her voice cool. âI seldom visit and am practically a guest here. Isnât it polite to ask me to cook?â
Lyla stepped in, trying to smooth over the tension. âJoelle, Katie really admires you and just loves the treats you bake. She refuses to eat anything else.â
Joelle smirked. âSo, because she wants something, Iâm supposed to jump to it? Youâre good at twisting things, Lyla, making it sound like Iâm cherished while treating me like a servant.â
Lylaâs face froze momentarily, embarrassment evident. She quickly shifted her focus to Adrian. âWhatâs gotten into Joelle today? Did you two have a spat? Itâs normal for couples to disagree, but bringing that tension home isnât right.â
âWe didnât argue or fight. She just doesnât like you.â Adrian wrapped an arm around Joelleâs shoulders, guiding her toward Ireneâs room.
âJoelleâ¦â Ireneâs frail voice called from the bed as she extended a delicate hand towards Joelle. âCome, sit beside me.â Joelle walked over and took her hand.
Ireneâs face lit up with a warm smile. âI heard you and Adrian had a wonderful time abroad recently.â Joelle looked surprised. âHow did you know?â
âLacey called and told me everything,â Irene replied, her eyes shining with satisfaction. âItâs so good to see your relationship flourishing. It puts my mind at ease. I can rest peacefully now.â
âPlease donât say things like that, Irene,â Joelle responded, feeling uneasy about the implication that Irene didnât have much time left. It felt so final.
Just as Joelle was about to continue, Irene raised her hand to stop her. âI also heard that you and Adrian are still living separately. Why is that? Is the house uncomfortable? Is Leah not taking good care of you?â
âNo, itâs not that.â Joelle shook her head. âThereâs alreadyââ Adrian interrupted her before she could finish. âItâs more convenient for her job.â
Was he trying to prevent her from mentioning Rebecca to spare her from Ireneâs disapproval? How thoughtful.
Irene tightened her grip on Joelleâs hand. âHow much can you possibly earn from that job? If you really want to work, why not become Adrianâs assistant?â
Adrianâs voice was cold. âThatâs unnecessary.â
âYou donât get a say in this,â Irene snapped. âYou canât even keep your wife by your side. Useless man.â
