When Joelle mentioned Rebeccaâs illness, a thought flashed through Leahâs mind. âDo you know what kind of disease Rebecca has?â
Joelle shook her head. All she knew was that Rebecca had a brain tumor. It caused her to faint and lose her memory from time to time.
Leah said, âWhen you werenât around, she fainted often and would forget things. At first, I thought she was faking it, but then I noticed Adrian never questioned her. Thatâs when I started to believe there was really something wrong with her brain. But as for the exact illness, Iâm in the dark. Do you know any doctors? Maybe you could ask one of them.â
Joelleâs mind went to Rafael. As Adrianâs friend, he should know more. âThatâs a good idea, Leah. Thank you.â
Leah waved her hand dismissively before lowering her voice again. âHave you thought about how to get Rebecca out of the picture?â
Joelle sighed, shaking her head slowly. âNot yet. Sheâs sick, after all. If we force her out, we could look really bad.â
Leah nodded thoughtfully. âYouâre right. I hope you find a solution soon.â
âThank you.â
Engrossed in their conversation, neither noticed Rebecca standing behind the door, listening to every word. The moment she heard Joelleâs plan to drive her away, panic surged through her. Without wasting a second, she fled upstairs.
She had finally moved into Adrianâs home. She hadnât even had the chance to enjoy her time alone with him before Joelleâs unexpected return. And now Joelle wanted her gone? No way!
Heart racing, she grabbed her phone and dialed Erickâs number. Meanwhile, Erick was drunk and draped with two flirtatious women, one on each arm.
When his phone rang, he answered with a growl of annoyance. âWhat do you want?â
Rebeccaâs voice trembled with anxiety. âThe plan failed last time. Did Joelle suspect anything?â
Erick groaned, rubbing his temples as his headache intensified. âRelax. I told those guys to say they were following Adrianâs orders. Even though the plan didnât work, it still drove a wedge between her and Adrian.â
Rebecca wasnât convinced. âWhy do you keep failing? The more mistakes you make, the more suspicious it becomes. Are you helping me or setting me up?â
âWhy are you so impatient?â Erickâs patience was wearing thin. âEven if Joelle were raped, Adrian wouldnât marry you. You were useless and couldnât win Adrian over, so everything I did behind the scenes meant nothing!â
Rebeccaâs frustration bubbled over. âI was useless? Really? Which one of us is truly useless here? You promised youâd help me destroy Joelleâs reputation, but look at the outcome! Sheâs back, and now sheâs plotting to push me out. Are you satisfied with this mess?â
Erickâs irritation was tempered by a dawning realization. The gravity of the situation hit him as he heard the desperation in Rebeccaâs voice. âHow could Adrian do this?â
Rebecca wailed. âWhy wouldnât he? Just yesterday, he said Joelle returned and warned me not to provoke her. Our dad, brother, and mom had sacrificed so much for the Miller family, and this is how we end up?â
Erick clenched his jaw. âStop crying. As long as youâre ill, Adrian will have to look after us.â
Rebecca wiped her tears away. âForget Adrian for now. We need a plan to get rid of Joelle before she boots me out!â After a heavy silence, Erick finally spoke. âIâll come up with something. Wait for my update.â
Once he hung up, Erick dialed Adrianâs number. Few knew Adrianâs private number, but Erick, being part of the Lloyd family, had access. His connections meant many sought his aid.
Everybody was trying to reach out to the Miller family, and those who didnât have connections tried to find a way through Erick.
The phone rang until Adrian, roused from sleep, answered in a groggy voice, âHello?â
âGood morning, Mr. Miller,â Erick said, his tone ingratiating.
âWhatâs this about?â
Erick swallowed nervously. âI just got the bill for my sisterâs next treatmentâone hundred and fifty thousand dollars. Can youâ¦â
Before Erick could finish, Adrian cut him off. âIâll have the accountant transfer the money.â
Relief washed over Erick. He pressed on, âThe doctor mentioned she needs special nutrition. I already bought some supplements, costing nearly one hundred thousand. Could you reimburse me for that as well?â
Adrian opened his eyes and hesitated for a moment before responding, âAlright, Iâll have the accountant include that in the transfer.â
âThank you, Mr. Miller!â Erick said happily. âWith my father and brother away, I wasnât sure who to turn to. Itâs a blessing youâre handling Rebeccaâs care. Hopefully, sheâll recover soon!â
Adrianâs frown deepened. He sensed Erickâs ulterior motives behind the financial requests but chose not to dwell on it. He wasnât strapped for cash. If a bit of money could ensure Erickâs compliance, it would simplify matters.
âAnything else?â
âNo, thatâs all. I wonât take up more of your time,â Erick replied quickly.
After ending the call, Adrian found sleep elusive. He instinctively reached out, only to find his bed empty. Joelle was not beside him.
He walked downstairs and sighed in relief upon seeing Joelle and Leah in the kitchen, preparing breakfast. Everything seemed as it should, just like before.
