Adrian and Joelle were nestled close on the sofa when an unexpected knock at the door broke the moment.
Joelle instantly tensed, pushing against Adrian to create distance between them. âGet off me! Someoneâs there!â
Adrian remained as unruffled as ever. âAre you going to the hospital or not?â
Joelle bit back a retort, knowing this wasnât the time to argue. The last thing she needed was someone walking in on them.
âFine, you win! Now, move!â
Adrian finally relented, standing up just as the door swung open. Joelleâs eyes caught something unusual about his lower halfâa reminder of the passion theyâd just shared.
âAdie!â Rebeccaâs voice rang out as she entered the room. The sofa hid Adrianâs lower half, and Rebecca, oblivious, failed to notice Joelle lying there.
Rebeccaâs voice sent shivers down Joelleâs spine, freezing her in place. It took a moment for the reality to sink in. As Adrianâs wife, Joelle had to check in at the front desk every time she visited, yet Rebecca could waltz in and out as she pleased, even barging into Adrianâs office unannounced. Joelle couldnât control Adrianâs behavior, but Rebecca was another matter entirely.
She sat up, casually smoothing her disheveled clothes. âAdrian, you hurt me earlier.â
Rebeccaâs smile faltered as she registered Joelleâs presence. âJoelle, I didnât see you there.â
âWhat? Whatâs so strange about me being in my husbandâs office?â
Rebecca shifted uncomfortably under Joelleâs stare, clearly caught off guard. She had never expected to walk in on such a scene, least of all in Adrianâs office.
âNo, no.â
Joelle ignored her, and Adrian remained indifferent. He knew he hadnât actually hurt Joelle, and even if he had, she wouldnât mention it in front of someone else. Despite her talk of divorce, Joelleâs jealousy over Rebecca was unmistakable. She was a walking contradiction.
Adrian, however, seemed oddly pleased by the situation. He turned to Rebecca. âWhat brings you here?â
Rebeccaâs smile returned, though a bit strained. âAdie, the doctor said my condition has improved. I wanted to share the good news with you!â
Adrianâs cold demeanor softened, if only slightly. âYou couldâve just called me!â
Blushing slightly, Rebecca replied with a shy smile, âI wanted to share the good news with you in person, Adie. Do you have a moment? Iâd love to treat you to lunch as a way of thanking you for all your support.â
Trying to conceal her true intentions, Rebecca extended the invitation to Joelle as well. âJoelle, why donât you join us?â She was certain Joelle would refuse; the request was too humiliating. The thought of having Adrian all to herself made Rebecca inwardly pleased, until Joelle responded calmly, âSure, Iâd be happy to!â
Rebeccaâs smile nearly faltered. âOkay, letâs go, then!â
âNo need.â Adrian loosened the top button of his shirt and relaxed on the sofa. âJoelleâs already bringing me lunch. You can head back.â
Disappointment washed over Rebecca. âAdieâ¦â His gaze met hers, firm. âIâve told you before. Donât call me that!â
Rebecca blinked, feigning innocence. âDid you? My memory isnât the best, you know that. Iâll make sure to remember next time.â
Adrian, not wanting to embarrass her further, let the comment pass in silence. Joelle couldnât help but roll her eyes, but she quickly composed herself, her tone deliberately pointed. âAdrian, donât disappoint Rebecca. If lunch is off the table, why not supper instead?â
She turned to Rebecca with a subtle smirk. âRebecca, weâll leave the evening plans in your hands.â
Feeling as though she had just been handed orders like a servant, Rebecca replied awkwardly, âOf course!â Joelle didnât leave her any room to retreat. âAnd please, close the door on your way out.â
She picked up a piece of chicken and offered it to Adrian. âAdrian, try this.â
As soon as the door clicked shut, Joelle dropped her pretense. Setting down her fork, she said coldly, âDonât thank me! You and Rebecca can enjoy your date tonight. Leah and I wonât wait for you for supper.â
She began to rise, but Adrian caught her hand, pulling her off balance. Joelle stumbled over the armrest and fell into his lap. His strong arms held her firmly in place.
âWhy are you so jealous lately?â he asked.
Joelle took a steadying breath. âIâm not jealous. Iâm just helping you and Rebecca spend more time together. Understand?â
Adrian chuckled. âYouâre being considerate now?â
Joelle flashed a sharp smile back. âI have many great qualities. Itâs a shame youâre too blind to see them.â
Adrianâs gaze darkened with playful intent. âOh, Iâve noticed. Youâre flexible, and you sound pretty good in bed too. Those are definitely qualities.â
Joelleâs face flamed with embarrassment, anger sparking in her eyes as his words hit their mark. She raised her hand to slap him, but Adrian caught her wrist before she could make contact. âCalm down,â he said, his tone teasing. âTonight, Iâll take my time to discover what other great qualities you have.â
âArenât you spending the evening with Rebecca?â
Adrian shrugged nonchalantly. âThat was your idea, not mine.â
Joelle narrowed her eyes suspiciously. âIf you donât go, Rebecca will be really upset.â
