Then came the sound of a splash. Adrianâs face hardened, and he bolted outside, Amara and the others trailing behind to see what had occurred. Spencer stood by the pond, his expression a mix of confusion and alarm, while Joelle struggled in the water. Fiona, who had come for a visit, looked on, her face ashen. She pointed towards the pond, stammering, âBlood, thereâs bloodâ¦â
As raindrops stirred the waterâs surface, Adrian dove into the pond without a second thought. He emerged holding Joelle, whose pallor and bloodshot eyes spoke of her distress. âAdrian, help meâ¦â she gasped, her arms dropping weakly.
The scent of blood mingled with the rainâs dampness. Adrian, with a grim expression, carried Joelle past Fiona, demanding, âWhat happened?â Fiona glanced nervously at Spencer. Spencerâs gaze remained fixed on Joelle, unable to look away.
âWhy is there blood? How did Joelle end up in the pond?â Adrianâs voice was stern. âSpeak up. Donât make me ask again.â Fiona pointed at Spencer, her hand shaking. âI saw itâSpencer made advances on Joelle. She tried to escape him and fell into the pond!â
From under the eaves, Lyla burst forward, her usual poise shattered as she shrieked. âYouâre lying!â Irene, supported by others as she approached, managed to bring some calm. But upon seeing the blood, her demeanor turned severe. âAdrian, take Joelle to the hospital now.â
Adrian nodded, his expression set, and quickly carried Joelle to the car. He placed her in the passenger seat, and as the car sped away, his usually daunting presence softened. âOpen your eyes,â he urged.
Joelle clutched at her stomach, her soaked hair clinging to her ashen face, an image of genuine distress. Although Adrian suspected the blood was not real, a wave of unease washed over him. âJoelle?â
Gripping his arm tightly, she murmured with quivering lips, âAdrian⦠help me. Help our babyâ¦â Adrian froze, shock registering across his face. As he noticed more blood, realization dawned on him. Gently wrapping his hand around her cold one, he reassured, âHold on, Joelle.â
He floored the accelerator, rushing to Rafaelâs hospital. As they arrived, soaked to the skin, they drew many startled looks. Carrying Joelle into the emergency room, he bellowed, âSave her!â
As Joelle continued to bleed, fear gripped Adrian, his heart pounding fiercely. A doctor quickly intervened, wheeling Joelle towards surgery. âThe patientâs medical history,â he asked without pausing.
Caught off guard, Adrian stumbled over his words. âAs far as I know, none.â
âHow many weeks pregnant is she?â
His vision clouded, Adrian gasped for air, feeling detached from reality. âI⦠I donât know.â
The doctor glanced up, unsure of Adrianâs relationship to Joelle. âWho are you to her?â
âHer husband.â
âAnd you donât know how long sheâs been pregnant? Men! Do you ever truly pay attention to your wives?â Joelle was wheeled into the operating room. Adrian paused at the door, reeling from the revelation. She was pregnant with his child?
Today was supposed to be a pretense. How could she actually be pregnant?
His phone rang, pulling him slightly away to answer. It was Amara. âIs Joelle really pregnant?â
There was a brief silence. âHas the baby been saved?â âSheâs still in surgery,â Adrian replied.
Amaraâs tone was cold. âRegardless, Spencer isnât escaping this time. Irene is furious; she nearly had a heart attack. Quincy is punishing Spencer, making him kneel on the ground. Theyâre finished.â
Adrian found his motherâs comments detached. âMom, arenât you concerned about Joelle at all?â
Amara paused, shocked, but before she could respond, the line went dead. Adrian returned to the operating room door just as Rafael finished briefing the doctor.
âSheâs been pregnant for eight weeks. She showed signs of a miscarriage a few days ago. Her physical condition is frail. She has a thin uterus and has been slightly anemic recently.â
After updating the doctor, Rafael turned to face Adrian, catching the pain in his eyes. Adrian seized Rafaelâs collar in a sudden grip of anger. âYou knew about this, didnât you? You knew!â
Rafael responded coolly, âI knew because Joelle didnât want to hide it from me. You didnât know because you never truly cared about her.â
Defeated, Adrian released his hold and asked in a raspy voice, âHow long has she been pregnant?â âEight weeks,â Rafael stated.
That was just over two months. The last time Adrian had been intimate with Joelle was the night he had angrily driven her away. Adrianâs brow furrowed in distress. âCan the baby be saved?â
Rafael looked at him intently and posed a critical question. âDo you want to save the baby or Joelle?â âI want Joelle,â Adrian responded slowly, the weight of his priorities settling in.
