Just after midnight, Lionel called, his voice heavy with frustration. âI decided to stop pursuing Lynda. I donât think sheâs into me at all. Man, why is this always so hard? I finally get the nerve to go for someone, and sheâs just not interested.â Lionel went on for nearly five minutes. Dunn, sounding uninterested, interrupted.
âYou know that saying, right?â
âWhat?â
âWasting time is like murder.â
Lionel let out a frustrated sigh, as if he were about to break down. âI just got dumped, and you think thatâs supposed to make me feel better? Is this how youâre going to treat your future girlfriend?â
âShe wonât get dumped.â
Lionel scoffed. âDunn, no wonder no girl wants to be with you. You canât even help someone out when theyâre down. Youâre seriously no fun.â
Dunn thought about Aurora, her calm nature, and how she didnât care for these petty games. She wouldnât be bothered by something like this. âIf youâre so curious about how I date, try being a girl first.â With that, he hung up.
The call had made him miss an update from Auroraâsheâd posted a selfie holding a cat just half an hour ago. Was she still awake at this hour?
He quickly typed out a message, a hint of disapproval in his tone.
Aurora replied almost immediately, âA friend is feeling down, so Iâm just keeping her company.â
âDonât stay up too late. Get some rest.â
âGot it! You should rest too! Donât just lecture meâyou need to set a good example!â
Dunn could almost hear the playful tone in her words through the text. âOkay.â
Aurora didnât reply. She went back to her call with Lynda, continuing to comfort her.
âLynda, donât cry. Let go of the past so you can make room for something new.â
Lynda gripped a bottle of wine, her voice thick and unsteady from the alcohol. âAurora, how could he treat me like this? Iâve liked him for so long, always trying to get his attention, but he never even notices me.â
Auroraâs voice softened. âHow is that even possible? Didnât you date Dominic? That means he liked you too, right?â
âNot Dominic!â Lynda laughed bitterly through her tears, the pain in her heart cutting deeper than the alcohol could numb. âI only dated Dominic to get him to notice me. I was so stupid.â
Aurora froze for a second, taken aback. âHow could it be like this?â
If Lynda didnât actually like Dominic and only dated him to grab someone elseâs attention, that could only mean this mysterious person had some connection to Dominic. Who could it be?
Aurora scratched her head, feeling stumped. She didnât know Lyndaâs circle of friends well enough to figure it out.
âLynda, donât do anything foolish. If he doesnât care about you, focus on taking care of yourself. No one else should have the power to decide your happiness.â
âAurora, youâre right,â Lynda sobbed, her voice thick with emotion. âBut I just canât help it. I like him so much. Iâve tried everything for him. Even if he doesnât like me, I just canât stop.â
