âI didnât expect you to still remember to call me. I thought youâd cut ties with me,â she teased.
Rickeyâs response came with his usual casual tone. âIâm busy, unlike you. My dad hired five tutors for me. Iâm in class all day, every day, with them.â
Aurora couldnât help but scoff. âSo busy you canât even reply to my messages? Is that it? My uncle travels across three countries in a single dayâwithout even time to use the bathroomâand still finds time to message my aunt and let her know he was safe. Are you telling me youâre busier than him?â
âThatâs because theyâre husband and wife,â Rickey shot back.
Aurora felt a sharp pang in her chest at his words.
âWeâre not at that stage,â he added, as if explaining it all away.
If it had been before, Aurora might have hung up immediately. But now, she felt something in his voiceâa hint of grievance or disappointment. Maybe it was because of her, maybe it was something else, but it made her pause.
âIs there something you want to say to me, Rickey?â
âI do. I assume youâve received your acceptance letter from Dugruayae University. Congratulations! Our principal must be really proud of you, while Addie is fuming mad at home.â
The casualness in his tone somehow eased the awkward air between them. Aurora was relieved and bantered with him.
âIâm a smart-ass, remember?â
âEveryone has their moment of glory. Donât get too cocky with yours.â
Aurora snorted. âOh yeah? Well, at least Iâve had my moment of glory. What about you? You were always at the bottom of your class.â
Rickeyâs exam scores were always near the bottom, across every subject. Oddly enough, he didnât seem to care, while Aurora couldnât help but worry about what it meant for his future.
But Rickey would just brush her concerns off and tell her not to worry because even his father didnât care.
It was only now that Aurora realized she might have been too interfering. They were just friends, and friends shouldnât get too tangled up in each otherâs major life decisions.
Rickeyâs choice to go abroad without telling her had really hurt. But she now understood this was the nature of their friendshipâopen, yet heading in different directions.
âAurora,â Rickey called out, pulling her back to the present.
âYeah?â
âDid you miss me?â
Aurora snapped out of her thoughts, every part of her suddenly alert.
âOf course.â She tried to sound casual. âWithout you, I have no one to goof around with.â
âBut are you happy even when Iâm not around?â
