He approached the countess and Wendy, then shook her hand from around Wendyâs wrist. Her hand fell off so easily with an embarrassed expression.
âDonât do this again. Donât touch her again,â he said coldly.
The countess, who was driven into a corner, kept looking at her husband as if she was asking for help. However, the earl, standing in a crooked position, blinked and checked Lardâs countenance.
âYou had better not do anything that prompts my anger. If possible, donât even breathe toward her,â said Lard resolutely.
âUh, itâs the most fundamental moral law for me to meet my daughter. Why are you trying to separate me from her?â Mrs. Hazlet protested.
âWell, isnât it you who did so from the beginning? Did you forget you didnât let Oliviaâs mother meet her?â Lard asked, as if he could not understand. After looking into Olivia Hazletâs personal background, Lard found out that she had suffered a lot at the hands of the Hazlet family. When Mrs. Hazlet came to realize that Lard pointed out her cruel treatment of Oliviaâs mother, she just sighed without replying at all.
âDuke Schroder, Iâm sorry⦠She made a slip of tongue as she was emotionally charged. So, please be merciful,â said Earl Hazlet cautiously after watching his wifeâs violent reaction nervously.
He continued, âI regret that I have not managed my house and family members properly. It is my fault that I didnât fully understand my daughterâs feelings as a father⦠I hear you love Olivia. You know that Francis is her only sister. Would you be able to cancel the heavy punishment meted out to Francis, given her special relationship with Olivia?â
He politely spoke, looking at Lardâs expression. Wendy turned her eyes at his changed attitude.
âEarl Hazlet, you still canât make head or tail of it. Donât you know why Francis paid the heavy price? How can you try to cover your eyes with such ridiculous excuses and gloss over the truth of the matter?â Lard sharply rebuked him as if he couldnât stand it anymore. Lardâs eyes sparkled with anger.
The earl flinched at his unexpected anger and changed the topic by saying, âOh, thatâs not what I mean. Iâm sorry to have offended you, sir. Yes, youâre right. I totally agree with you. Iâm going to manage my family well, so please be merciful toward me. And please forget what we have told you today.â
Earl Hazelet was at a loss about what to do. He grabbed Mrs. Hazletâs arm and pointed to the balcony door with his eyes. Her face was oddly contorted.
âLetâs leave, honey. Come on!â
While resisting a bit, she left the balcony reluctantly with her husband. But even in that embarrassing situation she didnât forget to cast a resentful glance at Wendy.
While facing her fierce gaze for a moment, she closed her eyes when they left the balcony.
Her eyes felt sore as if she hadnât slept for a long time.n/o/vel/b//in dot c//om
âWendy!â She silently opened her eyes at Lardâs call and looked up at him.
Over the castle behind him the smoke of the beacon was still rising into the sky. Holding her breath briefly with a heavy heart, she turned her eyes and saw the burning Cheddar Palace.
âThe fire is still intense there⦠How did you come to this place again?â
âI have taken measures to prevent the fire from spreading outside the palace. Itâs too late to bring the fire under control, so I chose to let it burn down rather than face the danger.â
Like he said, the fire at Cheddar Palace did not spread to surrounding areas. The flames around the palace seemed to have died down a little, but the black smoke was still rising furiously.
ââ¦I came to you for help. â
âMy help? â She saw him with a curious look. He hesitated for a moment.
âSir Dylan Lennox was injured. I think you had better see him.â
While she was going to Merihi Palace where the Imperial Medical Center was located, she blinked her eyes in confusion. She did not want to judge hastily why he wanted her to see Dylan.
âHow much was he injured? How serious is his condition?â She thought to herself on the way.
Lard also shut up without further explanation. Wendy also hesitated to ask him. She spaced out at the moment.
Adjacent to Cheddar Palace, Merihi Palace was in chaos, full of noise everywhere. There were people carrying the injured, patients making desperate cries for help, and the doctors running around everywhere. It was a terrible and miserable scene.
âHere we are,â Lard stopped in front of a door on the long hallway. Wendy mechanically followed him when he opened the door. As he entered, two doctors who were busy moving around inside greeted him. They were holding a bunch of red and yellow gauze in their hands.
âYou can get out now.â
âPardon? Butâ¦â
âCan you leave, please?â
Because of Lardâs sudden order, the doctors made eye contact with each other, hesitating to get out. As the older of the two reluctantly nodded, the other one also moved out of the room.
Without further involvement, Lard stood on the spot. Wendy glanced at him and headed for the bed in the middle of the treatment room. As she walked closer, her fingertips trembled.
âDylanâ¦â Wendy called his name after confirming he was in bed. She uttered a series of ambiguous words close to moaning.
âHow come you got thisâ¦â
Wendy couldnât say anything at the terrible burns spread across his hands. Blood and sores oozed between burnt and peeling skin. A couple of his fingers had melted together from the intense heat and stuck together. Amid the extreme pain, he was barely gasping for breath.
Wendy extended her trembling hands toward the soot marks on his pale face. They were like the wounds that signalled his last moments as a knight. Even if the wound healed, he would not be able to hold the sword again. She couldnât touch his face but grasped his trembling hands and pulled them to her chest.
âUhhh⦠â He moaned feebly. The moan rang in her ears louder than thunder. She felt heartbroken.
Wendy started wandering around like a crazy person. She stopped moving only when she cast a glance at the window. Opening the window quickly, she reached out over the long flower pot on the outside windowsill. She pulled the pansies out roughly. Then she tightened her grasp and pulled the pot several times to pull it out of the fixed window frame, but the fixed pot would not move. She got annoyed.
âLet me do it.â Suddenly, Lard approached her and pulled it out for her.
She ran to the other windows silently and did the same thing.
When she put the pots side by side in the treatment room, she pressed her index finger down on them. She did it in succession and repeatedly.
She was very quick and didnât hesitate.
As soon as she rose from her knees, she poured water into the basins used by the doctors and wiped her dirty hands. Then, she searched the glass shelves on the wall and found medicinal bowls.
In the meantime, the plants budded in the pots and extended their stems, as always, and continued to grow diligently as she wished. Soon red fruits appeared on the limbs of the plant. They were familiar with the fruits. The fruit, with its rough surface like a mace, had endless vitality in its small flesh. It was Bahazman called the Fruit of Heaven.
She picked plenty of fruit without hesitation. She quickly put them in a bowl and crushed them with a stick and spread them over Dylanâs wounds. Some of the juice flowed down onto the bed sheets, but she didnât care and continued to spread it around.
Soon, she wrapped Dylanâs arms with bandages. After she was done giving first aid with the fruit, her body was soaked with sweat. Dylanâs breathing relaxed a bit.
Lard came to her silently and offered her a cup of water. She took a few sips of water and told him, âCan you raise his upper body a bit?â
He nodded and carefully raised Dylanâs upper body. She put Bahazman juice into his mouth. After several attempts, Dylan managed to swallow the juice.
It took effect immediately. After coughing several times lightly, his eyelids fluttered quietly like dragonfly wings, and soon, he opened his eyes. His blue eyes wandered briefly without focus.
ââ¦Oliâ¦via?â He recognized Wendy. His voice was very dry and cracked, but even before she replied, his face contorted in pain and he began to moan. As he regained consciousness, he began to feel the pain of severe burns.
Embarrassed, she tried to get up to bring a little more Bahazman fruit. He called her name again, âOlivia.â
