VALERIE WAS PACING AROUND her apartment, checking her phone every few seconds as she waited for billie to pick her up. they'd been texting all day about the restaurant valerie was obsessed with, and since billie had lost a bet, she was treating valerie to dinner. valerie adjusted her hair for the fifth time, then sighed and put her phone down. she needed to chill.
her phone buzzed.

valerie liked the message, grabbed her bag, and headed downstairs.
when she stepped outside, billie was already in the driver's seat, window rolled down, dressed in a sweatshirt and baggy jeans. as valerie approached, billie leaned over and popped the door open for her.
"finally," valerie teased as she slid into the passenger seat. "thought you'd leave me here forever."
"yeah, right. i'm way too curious about this 'best food ever' place you won't shut up about," billie replied, pulling away from the curb.
valerie smirked. "just wait. you're gonna dream about this food."
they settled into an easy conversation during the drive, the music low in the background as they talked about everything from their latest studio sessions to the weirdest things they'd seen on tiktok.
when they got to the restaurant, they found a booth in the back, the kind with the dim lighting and comfy seats. billie grabbed the menu, glancing at it dramatically.
"so, what's the move? what's the absolute best thing here?"
"everything," valerie said. "but we're ordering a ridiculous amount, just so you know."
billie sighed, shaking her head. "my poor wallet."
"you lost the bet," valerie reminded her, grinning.
"unbelievable. i should've cheated."
they ended up ordering way too much food. as they waited, billie leaned forward with a smirk.
"okay, real question. what's the dumbest thing you've ever cried over?"
valerie narrowed her eyes. "why do i feel like you already have an answer for yourself?"
"because i do," billie admitted. "i once cried because i dropped a burrito on the floor."
valerie blinked. "okay, but like, was it a good burrito?"
"it was amazing," billie said, dead serious. "like, i took one bite, and i just knew it was gonna change my life. and then-boom. tragedy."
valerie nodded solemnly. "devastating."
"right?" billie huffed. "your turn."
valerie thought for a second, then groaned. "okay. this is bad, but... i cried during a dog food commercial."
billie immediately burst out laughing. "no way."
"listen!" valerie said, holding up a hand. "the dog was old, and the owner was taking care of him, and they were playing the softest piano music in the background, and it was just... a lot."
billie wiped a fake tear from her eye. "so beautiful."
"shut up."
their food arrived, and valerie's stomach twisted slightly. everything smelled incredible, but the thought of eating it made her uneasy. she picked up her fork, forcing herself to take small bites.
billie noticed. she didn't say anything, but valerie caught the way her eyes flickered toward her plate every so often.
they kept talking, laughing between bites, but valerie could feel billie watching-subtle, not pushing, but definitely noticing.
outside, flashes suddenly lit up the restaurant's windows. valerie sighed.
"great."
"paparazzi really showed up for this?" billie muttered.
valerie shook her head. "guess we're making headlines tomorrow."
"for sure. something dramatic, like, 'billie eilish and valerie wilson: secret late-night date.'"
valerie snorted. "or 'is it business... or pleasure?'"
billie smirked. "god, they're so predictable."
after lingering a bit longer, billie got up to pay, making a show of handing over the check. "consider this my last good deed of the month."
valerie grinned. "next time, i'm scamming you into losing another bet."
on the ride home, the energy was still light, but valerie knew billie had noticed. and even though she didn't say anything, valerie had a feeling this wouldn't be the last time billie paid attention to it.
