VALERIE SAT CROSS-LEGGED ON THE PLUSH couch in matt's cozy home studio, surrounded by the familiar sight of shelves stacked with music equipment and the faint scent of lavender from a diffuser. the space always felt safe, like a sanctuary where she could let her guard down.

"okay," matt said, swiveling his chair to face her. "three songs down, and we're on fire. you ready to dive into this next one?"

valerie leaned back, resting her head against the soft cushions. "yeah. let's do it," she said, though her tone was tinged with exhaustion.

matt raised an eyebrow, setting his headphones down on the desk. "you sure? you've been at this nonstop since the release of 'my tears ricochet.' not that i'm complaining, but you're allowed to take a breath, you know."

she gave him a small smile, wrapping her arms around a throw pillow. "trust me, this is the only thing keeping me sane right now. the fans loved the single, and i feel like i'm finally getting my momentum back. i can't lose that."

"fair," matt said, nodding thoughtfully. "but don't forget to sleep, eat, and occasionally do something not music-related, okay?"

valerie rolled her eyes but couldn't hide her grin. "okay, dad."

matt chuckled, grabbing his guitar from the corner of the room. "all right, miss sass. let's see what we've got for this track. you wanna start with lyrics or melody?"

"melody," valerie said without hesitation. "i've been playing around with some ideas on my phone." she pulled out her device, scrolling through her voice memos.

matt leaned in, curiosity lighting up his face. "hit me."

she played a short, haunting melody, humming along softly as it filled the room. matt immediately picked up his guitar, matching the notes and adding subtle flourishes.

"yeah," he said, nodding as he found the rhythm. "this is gonna be good. feels like a midnight song, you know? the kind you scream-cry to in the car."

valerie laughed, her first genuine laugh in days. "perfect. that's exactly the vibe."

they worked seamlessly, bouncing ideas off each other, the room buzzing with creativity. after an hour, matt leaned back, strumming the last chord they'd crafted together.

"okay," he said, grinning. "this might be my favorite one so far."

valerie leaned her chin on her hand, smiling at the progress they'd made. "it's coming together, huh?"

"absolutely," matt said. then, after a pause, he added, "you're doing amazing, val. really. you've been through hell this past year, but the way you've poured it all into your music? it's... inspiring."

valerie looked away, the weight of his words settling over her. "thanks, matt. that means a lot."

he stood, stretching his arms above his head. "all right, i'm starving. takeout?"

"always," valerie said, grabbing her phone to pull up their go-to spot.

as they settled back onto the couch, waiting for their food to arrive, valerie couldn't help but feel a flicker of hope. her album was shaping up to be the most personal work she'd ever created, and for the first time in a while, she felt like she was exactly where she needed to be.
