I sipped my third cup of coffee of the day and spit it out immediately. It got cold without me noticing. I was too focused owork, I had many files to review and I should have found a place for the fall photo shoots.
My phone vibrated for what seemed like the hundredth time. I was sure he was laughing at me. This time I checked, withthe excuse of needing a break, and immediately ran into Jaceâs office, stumbling on my own black heels.
âDamn Noras!" She screamed when I came in, jumping into her armchair. âYou scared me! What?
I handed him my phone, waving it frantically in front of his face. âTake the phone! Take it, it pisses Jace off, and I don't wato reply to his messages! Please, take it!"
Jace smiled slightly and picked up the phone. I observed his expression while he was reading the messages, his mouthopen in surprise.
From: Unknown, yesterday 9:18 a.m. - Noras.
From: Unknown, Yesterday 9:37am- I would like to see you soon.
From: Unknown, 10:56- Dinner tonight. I'll pick you up at 7am.
From: Unknown, 11:01- Noras.
From: Unknown, 12:10- Noras, answer me. Now.
From: Unknown, 12:56- Are you okay?
From: Unknown, 1:37- If you ignore me, it's really immature. Answer me. Now.
After a minute, Jace handed the phone back to me with an amused smile on his face. I stood in front of him and stared athim, silently asking for help. He tilted his head to the side.
âWell, I think he wants you to answer him..." He laughed.
âOh, damn Jace!â I groaned, collapsed in my chair and turned on the swivel chair. I wish I had one of these in my office, btI knew it would distract me easily. I turned one more time, then came face to face with him again. âYou're holding my phoso I won't answer. I have no self-control.â
I handed him the phone again and he took it with a sigh, placing it in one of the drawers of his desk. âWhy not ask him toexplain himself?â
âWhat is there to explain?â I answered. âHe is a hypocrite and I do not intend to be sucked into his world"
âYou should have at least fucked...â
âJACE!"
âSorry,â he laughed mischievously. âBut seriously, why don't you tell him to leave you alone?â
I rolled my eyes, leaning my head against the back of the chair. Have you ever met him? He will never leave me alone. Healways seems to get what he wants. If I answer him, 1 fall back into the circle. Thanks, but no thanks.â
âMaybe he and Cara were just talking? Maybe they are business partners?â
âMaybe they were just talking." I imitated him. He narrowed his eyes as he glared at me and got up from the desk. âReallyJace, we both know that they weren't just talking"
He shrugged his shoulders, pointing to the door. âPerhaps, Noras. Now go away, I have work to do.â
âYou're the worst best friend in the world," I mumbled, giving him a light kiss on the cheek and heading for the door. âOh,and feel free to flush my phone down the toilet For more free novels, visit FindNovel.net I went back to the break room to have another coffee before heading back to my office. The day passed incredibly slowly, every minute slower than the last. It had been the same the day before, sitting down and looking at the phone and givingup the idea of working.
Opening my laptop, I started to hate myself the second I typed his name into Google. Many new articles appeared and Iclicked on different sites, inquiring about him, even if it was the last thing I should have done.
The first site was Business Weakly, again.
âHenris Steve, head of Steve Enterprises, recently negotiated a merger with Johnson and Smith, making his company themost powerful in all of New York, and the most talked about on the entire American east coast. He is estimated at $231million, and is only 24 years old. Steve's representatives said that he was always thinking about âgrowing the businessâ arthat he was interested in different areas of activity."
My chin hit the ground at its value. I changed the site, going to the New York City gossip blog, where photos of him in ablack suit and various articles were uploaded.
âSteve has been seen dating model Cara Delevigne, and has recently been spotted with a mysterious brunette on severaloccasions. Everyone wonders who he really is with, but we all know that he can have whoever he wants. With this look anthis bank account, the man is practically unstoppable.â
I grumbled and decided to torture myself more, looking at several photos of him and drooling over each of them. Thoselips, with just the right shade of red, got me every time. But what I liked the most were those messy curls that completelycontradict her personality.
There was a brief knock on my door and Jace came in. âStop googling it.â
âwon't do ittâ I protested, closing the pages of the computer. âI told you I was done with him."
He rolled his eyes. âNoras, I know you better than anyone and I know for a fact that pictures of Henris Steve in a suit areyour screen right now. Now come on, Victoria wants to talk to us about something.â
âI'm not hereâ I mumbled, getting up. He raised an eyebrow and I raised my hands in surrender, shyly avoiding his gaze.closed the pages when you came inâ
âI knew it!" He teased me, squeezed my shoulders with one arm and approached. âYou have no right to do this again."
âI know, I need to find myself another sexy multimillionaire with a hidden soft sideâ I said sarcastically. âOh, wait."
He looked up once more when we entered Victoria's huge office. Decorated in the style of Henris's penthouse, all in blackand white and modern, his office also had several touches of red. A large desk dominated the room. We found her sittingquietly, her black hair falling behind her shoulders.
Victoria beckoned us to take a seat on the two leather armchairs located in front of the desk. âPlease sit down.â
We sat down quickly. I crossed my legs, looking for the least awkward position to sit in. She glared at me and I smiled bactrying to hide the fact that I was nervous.
it was already the second time that we had been called to the Victoria office. The first time, it was because we broke thecoffee machine and we left blaming Aaron. Victoria was not very amused. I quickly thought about what we could have doto get into trouble. She may have seen my Google history, it could be embarrassing. Then she started talking.
âAs you know, you have been an intern for almost a year here,â he began. âAnd, somehow, none of you managed to getfired. But even more surprising, you have worked well. All right. I'm going to give you one last assignment and then we'llsee if we can hire you full-time in permanent positions.â
âReally? I'l said in a high-pitched voice. Jace pinched me and I immediately stopped clapping. âI mean, what's the lasttask?â
âYou two will have to set up an entire section of the magazine by yourselves. It can be anything you want, it just has tostick. I hope it will be good enough to end up in the next issue.â He said with a smirk. âYou can work together. Now comeon, you have a week and a half to finish."
âThank you very much,â I said excitedly, leaning back against the desk to shake his hand. She shook my hand and Jace dicthe same, then we left the room. âWe won't let you down!â
âLet's hope not.â
As soon as the doors closed behind us, we both gave a cry of joy and started jumping in circles with our hands clasped.Jace lifted me off the floor and spun me around on myself, making us both laugh. He put a huge smile on my face and weran to my office, bumping into a poor intern.
âsorry!â I laughed when she hit the wall. âYm going to get a promotion!â
We collapsed on two chairs in my office trying to catch our breath. âHoly shit, Jace," I said breathlessly. âRemind me not tcrun anymore. It was, like, the most exercise I've done all year.â
âI know," he grumbled. âI am very proud of having managed to get you up. Maybe I'm stronger than I thought."
âAsshole.â
âYou know what I mean,â the brown one said with a laugh. âOh my God, we need to start putting ideas together. What arewe doing?â
âI don't know, I have so much work to finish for today. We start tomorrow, okay?â
âOKâ he agreed. âI'm going to start thinking about something and send you an e-mail with ideas.â
I watched him walk out of my office, happily strutting his stuff. Laughing foolishly, I went back to the boring job that I hacto finish for the day. As much as I wanted to start working on our section, I had to finish the rest first.
After an hour, I realized that I no longer understood anything. I looked at the file again but my brain refused to process asingle word.
âI need a fucking Adderall or something.â I whispered to myself. My hands started shaking because of the coffee I haddrunk and my stomach started gurgling. I threw the folder in the trash, deciding that it was horrible if 1 couldn'tconcentrate on it, and headed for the rest room.
I found Alice sitting at the table with Aaron when I arrived. âI heard that someone got a promotion!â She said cheerfully.
I laughed, opened the fridge and took out a yogurt. âWell, let's hope we don't screw it up.â
âYm sure everything will be fine. You and Jace are the dream team.âShe pointed it out. Aaron nodded, agreeing with her.âThat's right," I joked. âI have a lot of work to finish, see you guys laterâ
while walking, I started eating strawberry yoghurts. I sat down at my desk, my legs tucked under me, to try to relax a littlA drop of yogurt fell on my black blouse. âGreatâ I grumbled, trying to wipe it off.
As I was trying to lick the yogurt off my shirt, the frantic intern I had pushed opened the door. I almost dropped the yoguby surprise.
âHave you ever heard of knocking?â I said irritably, blushing.
âUm,â he rubbed his hands nervously. âA certain Mr. Steve is here to see you."
This time I dropped the yogurt on my lap and jumped out of my chair. âNo no no!â
I frantically searched for a hiding place in my small office. The only place I could find was under my desk, but I would nevbe there. Shit. âDon't let him in! Tell him I'm in a meeting!â
âHe says it's very important. And he knows you're not in a meeting, I told him you weren't busy." He whispered under hisbreath.
âI don't care!" said with stress, trying to clean the yogurt from my printed pants. âGet him out of here! You're lying like atooth-eater!â
She quickly nodded in agreement and was about to leave when I heard her voice from the other side of the door. He spolsoftly, in a calm tone, but in the most intimidating voice that I had never heard him use.
âPush yourselfâ He ordered deeply. The young intern gave me a look as if to apologize and left the room. I didn't blame hI seriously thought about running away too. My heart was racing and I tried to breathe, but I ended up coughing up air. When coughing, I still tried to clean the yogurt. When he entered, my gaze fell on his imposing figure and I almost faintedinstantly. Not only was Henris Steve incredibly angry with clenched teeth and a jaw that could have killed. It was also thefirst time I saw him without a suit.
