I groaned in frustration as I stared at my own reflection in the mirror. It had been twenty minutes of wrestling with my hair, attempting to fashion it into a tight ponytail. Today marked my debut as a university professor at Ultria University, and while excitement pulsed through me, so did nerves. I took a deep breath to calm myself and decided to tie my hair with a hair clip since it was much simpler and quicker.

Being the youngest professor on campus only amplified my anxiety. I'd spent a week honing my teaching techniques, determined to make a memorable impression on my students. I quickly applied my makeup, trying not to waste any more time. I had already wasted ten minutes on my hair and couldn't afford to delay any longer. Breakfast was skipped in my eagerness to start the day.

I barely made it on time, my heart racing as I navigated through the busy city. Living in the heart of downtown, I had underestimated the time it would take to cross the city to reach Ultria University, which was nearly on the outskirts. The traffic didn't help either, and I feared that my first day might end in disaster before it even began.

The lecture hall buzzed with anticipation as I stepped in, nerves and excitement battling within me. As I stood at the front, contemplating the sea of faces, a sudden wave of anxiety washed over me. I tried to silence the doubts and focus on the task ahead.

"Good morning, everybody. I'm Kayla McAlister, your new business management professor," I introduced myself, scanning the room until my eyes locked with his. It was a young man sitting in the fourth row, almost right in front of me. His gaze held an unmistakable spark of curiosity and a hunger for knowledge that resonated deeply within me.

I held his gaze for a moment longer than necessary before continuing with the lecture. I started by introducing the curriculum and the subjects we would focus on. I also talked about the upcoming assessments and then continued with the topic I had prepared for the day.

Throughout the lecture, I made short pauses and took time to ask questions, partly to ensure my students were paying attention and partly to identify the sharpest minds in the room. My gaze kept drifting back to him, and each time, I felt a jolt of something I couldn't quite name.

There was an intensity in the way he listened, absorbing every word I spoke as if it held the secrets of the universe. Little did I know, our paths were destined to intertwine in ways I could never have imagined.

From the first moment I laid eyes on him, I knew my life would never be the same. Laurent. His name alone danced on my tongue like a sweet melody.

I continued my lecture, occasionally glancing at the clock, eagerly waiting for the session to end. I stole glances at him from time to time, seizing every opportunity to admire his beautiful features.

When the lecture finally concluded, I dismissed the class, watching as the students packed up their belongings and left. To my surprise, Laurent lingered, taking his time unlike the others.

I quickly packed my belongings, anticipation coursing through me as he approached slowly. He was much taller than I anticipated, his presence commanding attention.

"Hi there," he greeted with a friendly smile, extending his hand. "I'm Laurent. It's a pleasure to meet you, Ms. McAlister."

"Nice to meet you too, Laurent," I replied, shaking his hand. My hand looked and felt so small in his.

Up close, his perfect features were even more striking. His baby blue eyes were hypnotic, drawing me in. "I just wanted to say thank you for today's lecture. I found it incredibly insightful, especially when you delved into marketing. Your passion for the subject really shines through in your teaching, and I appreciate the effort you put into making the material engaging and understandable."

His deep, confident voice made my senses come alive. I felt my cheeks heat up and silently prayed for the interaction to end soon.

Composing myself, I responded in a formal tone. "Thank you very much, Laurent. I'm glad to hear that you found today's lecture valuable, and I appreciate your active engagement with the material. It's always rewarding to see students enthusiastic about learning. If you have any further questions or would like to discuss the topic in more depth, feel free to reach out to me during my office hours. Keep up the great work!"

"Thank you, Professor. I definitely will. I'll make sure to attend your office hours. Thanks again!"

He gently released my hand, and I felt a wave of relief, thinking our interaction was over. But to my surprise, he continued with more questions.

"Actually, before I go, I was wondering if you could clarify a few things about the syllabus. I noticed there are a few assignments coming up, and I want to make sure I understand the expectations."

"Of course, I'm happy to help. What specific questions do you have about the assignments or the syllabus?"

"Well, for the upcoming essay, are there any particular topics you recommend we focus on, or is it more open-ended?"

"That's a great question. While the essay prompt offers some flexibility, I do have a few suggested themes that align with the course objectives. However, I also encourage you to explore topics that genuinely interest you within the broader scope of the subject matter. Are you considering any specific ideas already?"

"I haven't fully decided yet, but I'd appreciate any suggestions you have. I'm particularly interested in exploring the intersection of marketing strategies. Do you think that could be a suitable focus?"

"Absolutely, that sounds like a promising direction. Exploring the intersectionality of different marketing strategies could lead to insightful analysis and discussions. If you'd like, we can discuss potential research resources or brainstorm further during our office hours. Does that sound helpful to you?"

"Definitely, that would be great. Thank you for your guidance, Professor. I feel much more confident about approaching the assignment now."

"You're welcome. I'm here to support you throughout the semester. Don't hesitate to reach out if you have any more questions or need assistance with your coursework. Have a wonderful day!"

"Thank you, Professor. You too!"

He finally left, and I felt like I could breathe again. I was thankful that he kept the conversation professional. Although his questions were directed at the syllabus, there was something more in his eyes that did things to me.

Things I'd rather not think about.
