Hearing Jujuâs words, both Eudora and Amos were stunned.
The woman wanted to say something, but the crowd were already beginning to point and gossip.
âWhatâs wrong with the society these days? The poor family canât even be left alone to spend time and shop together in peace.â
âThatâs right. Do you think that you can barge in and destroy other peopleâs families just because you are somewhat pretty? You really ought to be ashamed of yourself.â
After being verbally attacked by the crowd, the woman finally couldnât help but grit her teeth and run away sheepishly.
Only then did Eudora sigh in relief and turn to look at Amos, âAre you alright?â
Amos didnât say anything. He lowered his head and glanced at his wheelchair.
Following his gaze, only then did Eudora realize that his wheelchair was stuck in between the drain gaps, and his ankle was injured because of it. Hence, he was unable to get out.
He couldnât bear to have his subordinates see him in such a situation, so he had to wait for her to come and help him.
That was probably the case, wasnât it?
But Eudora continued reeling in her thoughts. He couldnât let his subordinates to see him like this, but he was okay with herself seeing him in this situation?
Now that she was here, she couldnât bear to just leave him be. After she helped him out, she said, âWhy donât you come over to my place first? Iâll help you sort this out, and then Iâll call Clint for you. No one will make fun of you anymore now that youâre unstuck,â Eudora said reassuringly.
Amos did not know whether to laugh or cry.  Did this woman truly think that he had called for her help just because he was afraid someone would laugh at him?
Seeing that he remained silent, Eudora said again, âIf you donât say anything, Iâll take that as a yes. Well then, letâs head back first!â
To be frank, she wanted to leave this place as quickly as possible because there were too many onlookers watching them. Eudora felt that they were some kind of street show.
In no time, the three of them arrived at Eudoraâs place. When they got home, Eudora rushed to retrieve the first aid kit and applied medicine on Amosâ injured ankle gently.
The service apartment where they lived was quite decent, and they had most of the amenities and daily household supplies that they needed.
After Eudora finished applying medicine and left to put away the first aid kit, Amos quickly created a group chat on WhatsApp, inviting only two other people into it. The group chat had Harley, Clint, and himself.
As soon as it was created, he quickly sent out a brief message saying, âIf anyone calls both of you, donât answer the call.â
Harley immediately replied, âI seem to smell gossip in the air,â
However, Clint was more serious and asked, âPresident Granger? Did something happen?â
âIâm fine. Just remember what I said.â
As soon as he delivered the text, he quickly deleted the group chat in a flash.
He was as quick as lightning. No one would notice that it was there in the first place.
Juju came out with her favourite sandwich in her hands. âUncle, are you hungry? Here, have my snack.â
âThank you, but Iâm not hungry,â Amos replied softly, giving her a gentle smile.
Juju nodded and looked at Amosâ wound. âUncle, does your wound hurt? Let me make it all better!â
While the two of them were talking, Eudora quickly made a phone call to Clint. Usually, Clint would immediately answer her call, but weirdly, he did not pick up her calls even after multiple rings. She had no choice but to call Harley.
Similarly, Harley did not answer his phone.
Eudora glanced at Amos and suddenly felt an inexplicable surge of pity.
Over there, Juju was still talking to him. âUncle, do you have any kids?â
âNo, I donât!â Amos said.
âThen what about your family?â
Amos nodded and took a quick glance at Eudora. Noticing this, Eudoraâs heart sank and she hurriedly turned her head away.
After thinking for a while, she finally said, âWhy donât I send you home? I should still be able to hail a taxi at this hour.â
As soon as her words fell, there was suddenly a deafening clap of thunder, signalling that it was about to rain.
What sort of coincidence was that? Last time it was a hailstorm, and now they were expecting rain.
If it werenât for the fact that the weather was beyond anyoneâs control, Eudora would have thought that Amos was controlling the weather.
The rain came in a hurry, and in just a few minutes, it was pouring heavily outside.
Eudora looked at the clock on the wall. It was almost half-past ten. It was too late for a cab now.
She let out a sigh and said, âWhy donât you stay here for the night? Iâll prepare the couch for you.â
âAlright!â Amos said.
He showed no signs of custom courtesy since he had zero intentions of leaving this place anyway.
Juju was tremendously thrilled, âUncle, are you really going to stay over for the night? Here, have my bunny, you wonât be scared anymore!â
Eudora said helplessly, âJuju, itâs time for you to sleep. You have school tomorrow.â
âOh!â Juju answered helplessly, and then winked at Amos, âGood night, uncle.â
Only then did Eudora carry her into the bedroom. Amos sat alone outside in the living room and could vaguely hear the conversation between Eudora and Juju.
âClose your eyes.â
âMommy, I want to hear you sing.â
Eudora was silent for a while, then she started singing softly. âTwinkle, twinkle, little star. How I wonder what you areâ¦â
âNo, Mommy, I want to hearâ¦â
Amos couldnât hear the last few words clearly.
âBut it must also be another calming bedtime nursery rhyme, as cute like Little Juju, right?â he thought to himself.
Unexpectedly, Eudoraâs alto voice could be heard at the next second. âOld Macdonald had a farm, ee i ee i oâ¦â
Amos was shocked!
This little girl surely had a unique taste in music. It seemed that she did not take after Eudora in this aspect. She probably took after her father.
The next second, Amos froze.
Her fatherâ¦
Whenever he thought of Jujuâs father, he felt his own breath hitch followed by a heartache, in ways he had never imagined before.
He must be a very good man to have such a wonderful daughter like Juju. That must be the reason why that stubborn woman was attracted to him, right?
Even though he had passed away for so many years, she still could not forget about him.
Amos suddenly had flashbacks to the times when they were together five years ago. The memories washed over him like waves. When he thought of her lying in the arms of another man, he felt as if he was being stabbed repeatedly in the heart with a cruel, sharp knife.
The pain was so real and vivid that he felt that he was stabbed a thousand times. Amos clenched at his chest and closed his eyes.
Suddenly, Eudoraâs hesitant voice came from behind. âAre you not feeling well?â
Only then did Amos notice that the singing in the bedroom had stopped. He shook his head and said in a hoarse voice.
âNo, Iâm fine.â
He was more than fine, and he could take care of her and Juju too.
Eudora nodded and put some sheets over the couch together with a quilt.
âIâm very grateful to you for having saved Juju and allowing Juju to visit your house to see Cola. That is the only reason why I had invited you to stay over tonight. I hope you wonât misunderstand.â
This woman sure knew how to draw the line. Coldly, he replied, âWhat would I misunderstand?â
Eudora was stunned. She quickly replied, âWell, itâs good that there isnât any misunderstanding between us.â
After that, she got up and looked at Amos. âThe couch is all set. Could you get there by yourself?â
Amos didnât move. The next second, Eudora came forward and grabbed his arm. âLet me help you to the couch then.â
Amos could actually get onto the couch by himself, but when she touched him, he suddenly didnât want her to know that.
He nodded and put his weight against her shoulder.
It was only when Eudora helped him up that he realized that she had overestimated herself. This man may look very thin, but he was actually very strong.
When she finally reached the edge of the couch with some difficulty, Eudora suddenly felt her feet go weak, Without warning, she started to wobble and collapse towards the ground.
