In the detention room.
Charlie sat inside, staring blankly and in confusion at the red marks on his hand.
After leaving it for a night without treatment, the marks had already started to bruise and turn purplish-blue.
Just when he was deep in his thoughts, the door opened and Amos strode in.
âCharlie!â
âSir!â Charlie hurriedly stood up with a hint of joy in his eyes. But very quickly, that trace of happiness turned into raw guilt.
âIâm sorry, sir. I have committed a grave mistake. Please punish me!â
Amos didnât say a word and sat down opposite Charlie.
âI want to know what happened.â
Charlie had followed him for many years, and Amos knew him very well. His performance was the most outstanding in the organization since the very beginning.
Later on, he was promoted and followed beside Amos for many years. He was very careful and had never made any huge mistakes.
What happened this time was too unexpected.
Charlie took a deep breath and seemed to have made up his mind.
âSir, if I were to say that I was framed, would you believe me?â
Without hesitation, Amos nodded and said, âI believe you.â
Charlie immediately glanced at Amos with gratitude. This was the person he had sworn to follow for his entire life. He had indeed made the correct decision in the first place.
With that being said, Charlie stretched his hand out, exposing the purple mark on the back of his hand.
âThings were so hasty yesterday that I didnât notice that the back of my hand was hit by something. Now that everything was over, I realized that something was wrong. At that time, I saw that they were about to fight, and my first thought was to protect Miss Granger and Mr. Holt!â
Amos pondered for a moment and replied, âI understand. I will ask someone to investigateâ¦â
Charlie was taken aback and said, âSir, itâs dangerous. I donât have any enemies since Iâve been staying in the organization since young. The person who did this must be coming for you. Donât be impulsive.â
âItâs alright, I have my own plans. However, I may need to trouble you for some timeâ¦â
âIâll be fine!â
âOkay!â
Amos got up and patted Charlie on the shoulder, then turned around and left. Harley came quickly to greet him once he was outside.
âAmos, what happened?â
âHahâ¦â Amos chuckled, âDo you believe that Charlie will do such a thing?â
âOf course I donât believe it!â Harley shook his head and frowned, âCharlie has always been quite careful and calm whenever heâs given a mission. Unless you really wanted him to kill Tyler, then itâs impossibleâ¦â
âI donât believe it either! However, the party involved did it very discreetly. We donât have evidence to prove Charlieâs innocence for now.â
Harley frowned, âIsnât it obvious? It must be someone from the Nolan family. At that time, the scene was so chaotic, and only the people from the Nolan family had a chance to sabotage us!â
Amos agreed, âThe Nolan family is at a dead end, so they must have wanted to drag us down as wellâ¦â
âFabian is a b*stard!â Harley gritted his teeth and cursed, âHeâd better not fall into my hands, or I wonât let him go!â
Amos was quiet. He was worried about Eudora. If the Nolan family was already plotting against him, would Eudora be next?
Thinking of this, he waved to Harley and said, âIâll leave first!â
â¦
It was late by the time he arrived home. Amos went to the Holt manor first, but it was still the same as it was in the morning.
It was extraordinarily lonely in the dark of the night.
The courtyard was also silent and desolate. There was no trace of the shadow of the person he wanted to see.
After a while, Amos drove back.
Sugar Bun had already fallen asleep, but Juju was still on the sofa, rubbing her eyes to keep herself awake. Before Amos walked over, he heard Wesley consoling her in a soft voice.
âGo to bed first. Your dad will be back soon.â
Juju shook her head stubbornly, âNo, I want to wait for Daddy to come back.â
âJujuâ¦â
âDaddy!â Just then, Juju saw Amos. She got up in a hurry and hugged his leg tearfully, âGrandpa doesnât want Juju anymore, right? I saw the news this afternoon. He can no longer accompany Sugar Bun and me to watch the archery match!â
Juju had been holding back her tears for the whole afternoon. Now that she saw Amos, all her sadness instantly poured out. Amos felt a tight knot in his chest and reached out to hug Juju.
He turned to Wesley and said, âGo and get some rest!â
âOkay!â Wesley nodded before he said, âBut, Juju hasnât eaten dinner tonight!â
After Wesley left, Amos sat on the sofa with Juju in his arms. He did not try to comfort her but allowed her to cry her heart out before wiping away her tears.
âDo you feel better now?â
There were still teardrops on Jujuâs eyelashes as she asked Amos puzzledly.
âDaddy, why do people die?â
Amos didnât want his children to live in fairy tales. The world was cruel, and she needed to know that.
âEveryone will die, itâs the law of nature.â
âWill it happen to Daddy too?â
âYes!â Amos nodded, âMommy and I will leave one day. When that happens, you will be all grown up and have your own family in the future. Thatâs the only way to pass down the family blood.â
Juju didnât seem to understand completely, but she still felt gloomy.
âI want to be with Daddy and Mommy forever.â
Her tears began to fall again after saying that.
Amos sighed deeply. He also hoped that Jujuâs wish could come true. But in reality, it was never up to anyone to decide that.
After looking at his young daughter, Amos finally decided not to tell her the cruel reality.
He hugged Juju and said, âYour Mommy must be very sad now. Juju, can you help me accompany Mommy?â
Juju looked at Amos doubtfully, âDidnât Daddy and Mommy make up already? Why donât we go see Mommy together?â
âDaddy still has something to do! Juju, why not you go ahead first? You must take good care of Mommy, okay?â
âOkay!â Juju nodded.
Amos finally picked up Juju and chuckled, âThen, letâs have something to eat first. Donât make Mommy worry about you when youâre there with her, do you understand?â
âGot it!â
The little girl immediately wolfed down her dinner. After the meal, Amos took Jujuâs hand and went out.
It was only after he watched Juju being brought in that he left.
â¦
When Eudora returned to the hall, she thought that she could finally rest. However, she didnât know that there would be so many daily affairs to deal with.
Aside from that, there were also various documents to sign and some discussions regarding past contracts to be done.
Everyone stood in front of Eudora, looking either anxious or pleading.
âMiss, please sign mine first! The clients are still waiting!â
âMiss, mine too. Iâve been waiting for a few days! My clients will leave soon if they wait any longer.â
âMiss, the bills are out. Please take a look. Weâre still waiting for them to be settled tomorrowâ¦â
Even though Eudora had experiences with similar things previously, her mind was still in a mess.
She hadnât even managed to properly come to terms with Tylerâs death, yet she already had to deal with so many affairs in the Holt family.
Eudora took a deep breath, feeling tired both physically and mentally.
All of a sudden, a little girlâs soft voice was heard from outside the door, âMommyâ¦â
Before Eudora could react, the little girl snuggled warmly into her embrace.
Jujuâs chubby little hand patted Eudoraâs back as she said, âMommy, donât be sad. You still have us.â
Eudora wanted to smile, but for some reason, her eyes were red-rimmed.
