âDonât be scared, Shane.â
âMama? Whatâs going on?â Shane asked in a trembling voice.
His mother brushed a few locks of hair from his forehead. âItâs just a standard hospital visit.â
âBut we arenât at the hospital,â Shane said weakly.
âShh, Shane. Weâre at the hospital that I go to.â
Walking beside his mother, Shane took in the white walls and potted plants. The large room they were in had only a few couches and chairs to sit at, while two doors led in and out of the room.
âYour father will be ready in a moment,â his mother said softly, still trying to soothe him.
âWhy does Dad need to be ready?â Shane asked.
âHeâs doing your checkup.â
âWhy didnât he just do it at home?â
His mother sighed softly. âShane, we donât have medical equipment at home.â
Shane had never seen equipment at home, so she must be telling the truth.
The door opened, and his father stepped out, wearing a white doctorâs coat and stethoscope around his neck.
âReady?â he asked.
Shaneâs mother helped pull Shane out of his chair. âWeâre ready.â
Shane sniffled, feeling the beginning of a cold coming on. âAm I sick?â
âNo, honey. Todayâs visit is to make sure you donât get sick,â his mother explained.
Trusting his parents, he followed them through the door and into a waiting room. The door was locked behind him.
Shane looked around the bare room. His normal hospital had pictures of kitties and puppies on the wall. It felt welcoming. This one didnât feel like that at all.
Shaneâs mother helped him onto the exam table and pulled off his shirt.
âItâs cold,â Shane whined.
âItâll only be for a few moments,â his mother said.
Shaneâs father started taking his vitals and checked his heart and ears. Shane found that normal and sat patiently.
âI have to give you a shot today, Shane,â his father said. âItâs just like the ones your other doctor has given you. Itâll make it so you donât get sick in the future.â
âOkay,â Shane said nervously.
Shane watched wide-eyed as his father lifted a large needle from the counter. His breathing quivered as it drew near.
âThereâs going to be a pinch,â Shaneâs father warned.
Closing his eyes, Shane felt his mother grab his hands. âYouâre being very brave, Shane.â
âUh-huhâ¦â Shane mumbled.
When the needle pierced his skin, it certainly felt like a normal needle and Shane relaxed. The size didnât appear to be that bad. It entered through his leg, through his thigh.
When it punched his bone, he screamed.
âHold him!â his father growled.
Strong arms and hands clamped down on Shane, holding him still as he tried to scramble away from the needle.
âDaddy!â Shane cried.
âShh⦠Itâs almost over,â his mother whispered.
Shane felt fire pumped into his thigh, and then he started to fade. The world dropped away from him as his brain fought against the pain.
âItâs over,â his father murmured.
âWill it work?â his mother asked.
âYes. I have faith that heâll be able to bond with the essence without issue.â
âWe had no way of testing it,â his mother said.
âYouâre right. But with whatâs coming, this is the best I can do.â
âShould we tell him?â his mother asked.
âNo. Heâs out right now. When he wakes up, he wonât remember any of this. Letâs get him home.â
Shaneâs mind faded the rest of the way, the pain too much for him.
***
Rai stood just outside the bedroom, listening to Shane toss and turn. He was having another one of his dreams, and she still had no real way to help him.
âIs he always like that?â a woman asked.
Rai turned to the new addition. Myra, the water serpent. âLately, heâs been having dreams that he wonât talk about.â
Myra frowned. âForce him to talk.â
âNo,â Rai growled. âAnd if you try, Iâll tear you apart.â
Holding up a scaled hand, Myra stepped back. âOkay, so youâre a tad protective.â
Rai glowered at her, but it was Hansel that stopped her from talking. âCalm yourselves.â
The air felt heavy as the hawk man asserted his element.
âStop that,â Reginald grumbled. âI didnât bring you here to argue.â
âWhy did you bring them here?â Rai demanded. âAll they want to do is assert their dominance.â
Reginald turned to the feathered man. âI will remind you that Shane is bonded to me and Rai both. Raiâs essence is fully matured, making her stronger than either of you. Iâm also stronger because of that too. Once he bonds with my essence completely, not many Descendants will be able to stand against us.â
Myra narrowed her slitted eyes. âWhy are you telling us this?â
âHeâs still not strong enough,â Rai admitted. âWe need more bonds.â
Hansel hummed. âAnd you are introducing us to the man now, so we have time to think.â
âYes,â Reginald admitted. âThe other Descendants are in town, but you two have been close associates.â
A flux of power washed over them, making them all turn back to Shane.
Reginald grunted. âEven in his sleep he is merging with my essence. Heâs already figured out how to use my element and has shown aptitude beyond what he should for Raiâs.â
Rai nodded. âI donât know how he does some of the things he can.â
âLike what?â Myra asked.
âHe can summon items,â Rai said with a frown.
âItems?â Hansel asked.
âYes. Bags, towels, things like that. He also infused a furnace with an ever-burning flame and started a generator without fuel.â
Myra inched towards the bedroom. Rai stopped her, but the serpent craned her neck to see inside. âWho is he?â she asked.
âI donât know,â Rai admitted. âBut heâs my mate, and Iâll protect him with my life.â
Reginald stepped forward and grabbed Myraâs shoulder, pulling her back. âHeâs under my care as well.â
Hansel cleared his throat, the act vibrating the air. âWill he be able to stop Veronica?â
âYes,â Rai said. âThe question is if we make it in time.â
âWhat are you going to do about the humans of that city?â Myra asked.
âIâllâ¦try to only kill a few,â Rai said with huff. âStupid protective human.â
Reginald rubbed his eyes. âWe canât kill them all.â.
Scowling, Rai crossed her arms. âThatâs what Shane keeps saying as well.â
Shaking his head, Reginald turned to their new companions. âApproach him slowly. And not at the same time.â
Rai nodded. âItâll be a few weeks until he can bond with another. You donât have long to get to know him.â
Myra stepped back before turning to the exit. âI understand.â
Hansel agreed as well. âIâll seek him out in the morning.â
Rubbing the bridge of her nose, Rai turned back to the bedroom. âGet some sleep. Iâll take him to the town for one last day in the morning.â
She didnât turn when she heard Hansel and Myra leave the den. Nor did she react when Reginald closed his bedroom door behind him.
With her eyes closed, she listened to Shane toss and turn. What goes on in your dreams, Shane?
***
Shane stood at the edge of the town, looking over the buildings and streets. A Descendant was carrying in a buck, their mouth dripping with blood.
âHow many Descendants did you recruit?â Shane asked.
Reginald glanced at him before turning back to the town. âTwenty. They will keep your people fed and teach them how to gather and hunt.â
Rai stepped up, still yawning. Taking his hand, she rested her head on his shoulder. âYour people will be protected.â
Shane nodded. âGood. When are we leaving?â
âTonight,â Rai said. âWe thought that you might have some things to handle in town before you go.â
Shane kissed the top of her head, making her ears twitch. âI should at least talk to Jeremy and the others before we leave.â
The story has been illicitly taken; should you find it on Amazon, report the infringement.
âIâll check on my people,â Reginald grumbled.
âMake sure they donât eat anyone,â Shane said with a chuckle.
Rai smacked his arm. âWe are not barbarians.â
Shane watched Reginald walk off before turning to Rai and pulling her in front of him. âHow about you and I sneak off for an hour?â
To his surprise, Rai shook her head. âNot right now. Itâs been nice having you alone the last few nights, but itâs time to work again.â
Sighing, Shane pulled her towards the town. âIs the option to run away still on the table?â
Rai giggled then sighed. âI would love nothing more than to run away with you. But if we donât stop Veronica, more than just your city will be destroyed.â
Closing his eyes, Shane pulled them to a stop. âWhy me? I didnât want any of this.â
âYou wanted to be a Marked,â Rai reminded. âNow you are a true Marked, a Summoner. Unlike those bastardized versions, you can call on the power of the elements, and your summons will grow stronger as you do.â
âYeah,â Shane said softly.
With his eyes still closed, he thought of his latest dream. What did Dad give me? Why am I just now remembering it? Did they prepare me to become a Marked? A Summoner?
âShane?â Rai asked before touching his cheek.
Startling, Shaneâs eyes sprang open.
âAre you okay?â Raiâs voice was filled with worry.
âI think so,â Shane said, forcing himself to smile. I wish my parents were still alive so I could ask them. The things I can do with essence donât make sense to the Descendants. Why is that?
Soft lips pressed on his, bringing his attention back to Rai.
âSorry,â he mumbled. âJust a lot on my mind.â
âWant to talk about it?â Rai asked.
Shaking his head, Shane started walking again. âNo, I donât.â
Rai kept pace with him, sending him worried glances. âIf you doâ¦â
âRai! Stop!â he snapped. âI donât want to talk about it!â
Rai jolted in surprise.
Sighing, he whispered, âSorry.â
Taking his hand, Rai said, âItâs okay. Iâm your partner in this, Shane. I like to think of myself as more than just your Summon.â
âYou are,â Shane assured her.
A flicker of movement caught his attention, forcing him to stop.
âWhatâs wrong?â Rai asked.
Shane peered at the shadows around them, a sense of unease permeating the air.
âSomeone is watching us,â Shane said in a mere whisper.
Rai scanned the surroundings, her head turning every which way. âI donât see anything.â
âThey are here,â Shane said. âThey just wonât come out.â
Another flicker of movement drew his attention to the shadows cast by a nearby building. Straining his eyes, he saw a slight flicker in the darkness.
Filling his hand with fire, he threw the small fireball at the flicker and watched it leap to the side just before the explosion.
Raiâs body exploded into flames as he attacked, her growls filling the air.
âCome out,â Shane said evenly.
The sound of a tongue clucking preempted a figure stalking out of the shadows. âYou found me,â a soft voice said.
Shane touched Raiâs shoulder as she spun on the newcomer.
âCalm down,â he said. Stepping in front of Rai, he surveyed the shadowy figure as they finished emerging.
A humanoid cat woman, complete with black ears, hair, and tail was draped in all black leather. Two sharp canines jutted just slightly from her mouth, giving her an adorable look.
âWhy spy on me?â Shane asked.
The cat sauntered forward, her steps mesmerizing as light bended around her. âI heard there was a gathering of humans and Descendants. I had to see for myself just who exactly managed it.â
Shane rubbed his chin. âDid I pass your test?â
Rai stepped back in front of him as the cat tried to come closer. âDonât you dare!â
The cat raised her brow before looking Rai up and down. âYou smell like him. Stronger than just a bonded pair. Are you his mate by chance?â
âYou can tell?â Shane asked.
âYes.â She smiled. âIâm even more intrigued.â When she blinked, the world shifted as the light bent, nearly forcing Shane to look away.
âYouâre going to fall in love with me, arenât you?â Shane asked. âI always wanted a cat growing up.â
âI thought you wanted a fox?â Rai asked, clearly thrown off.
âWhy canât I have both?â Shane smiled. Stepping forward, he tilted the catâs chin up. With one finger, he rubbed the soft part of her throat. âYouâre a good kitty, arenât you?â
âWhat are you doing?â the cat whispered.
Shane tilted his head. âIsnât it obvious?â With his other hand, he scratched around her ears.
Rai stepped forward and glanced between the two of them with wide eyes. âShane, how do you know sheâs a cat?â
âShh. Iâm having a moment,â Shane said. âDo you know how long itâs been since Iâve seen a cat? My neighbor had a cat, and sheâd let me play with it from time to time. This was how I showed it attention.â
âStopâ¦â the woman whispered. The light warped around her again, and she tried to pull back, but Shane followed her.
âWhat do you eat?â Shane asked. âIâm sure thereâs a bag of cat food somewhere in this town.â
âWhat?â the woman asked, her voice finally breaking.
âFish?â Shane mused. âWe could go fishing. Then again, cats donât like water. I canât swim, so I canât pull you out if you go in. But Iâm sure we could find a fishing pole around here. Then we would need wormsâ¦â
âShane,â Rai groaned.
The cat blinked a few times, warping the shadows each time. Her head pulled away from his fingers slightly. âWhatâs happening?â
Shane smiled and continued scratching around her ears. âYou were just telling me about an amazing fish recipe. We were going to try it this afternoon.â
âWait? What?â the woman asked. Pulling away fully, she stepped back. Touching her throat, her lips quirked up into a smile just before she shut it down and frowned. âWhy were you petting me?â
âYou asked me to,â Shane said.
âI did not!â
âYou practically begged for me to pet you.â Shrugging, Shane maintained his smile. âWho am I to deny a pretty lady their fetish?â
âItâs not a fetish,â the cat growled.
âI could probably find a brush,â Shane mumbled. Holding out his hand, he infused his palm with essence, and a brush appeared. âLooks like I have one. How much loose fur can I remove?â
âYouâre not brushing me!â
Rai smacked her forehead with her palm. âDid you get the information you were after?â
Shane understood that she was trying to get back on topic, but he wasnât done quite yet. âIf I wrap you in a blanket and roll you up, can I call you a purrito?â
Retreating into the shadows, the cat melded away. âIâm leaving.â Her soft voice seemed to drift from all of the shadows.
Shane watched her shift along the building. âBut I havenât finished pampering you yet!â he called after her.
Rai rubbing her temples. âShaneâ¦â
He felt his face fall flat. âSheâll be back,â he said calmly, the humor gone from his voice.
Rai looked up at him with furrowed brows. âHow do you know?â
âShe was purring when I scratched her ears. She wouldnât let me have done that if she wasnât curious or felt the need to trust me in some way. Sheâll want to understand why she acted like that.â
Shaking her head, Rai took his hand. âI think you really confused her.â
Shane nodded and scanned the shadows. âSheâs gone.â
âHow can you see her? Even with her standing in front of us, I couldnât make out her form.
âI donât know,â Shane admitted. âBut Iâm curious why she came to us in her human form.â
Nodding, Rai pulled him back towards the school. âYouâll have to ask her that next time.â
âLetâs get to work.â Shane dismissed the cat from his mind for now. He wanted to make sure everyone was working together properly before he left.
***
Shane almost made it to the school when another Descendant intercepted him. This time the woman had blue scales that ran across her hands, arms, neck, and part of her face.
âSo, youâre Shane,â she said.
âRai, is it me, or are Descendants telling me my name today?â Shane asked.
The woman quirked a brow up as she glanced at Rai.
Rai shook her head. âThis is Myra. Sheâs a water serpent and will be providing water for your people.â
Shane smiled. âItâs a pleasure to meet you, Myra. Why donât you have a tail?â
âWhat?â Myra glanced behind her. âWhy would I have a tail?â
âYouâre a snake,â Shane stated. âSnakes are like all tail.â
Frowning, Myra once again turned to Rai.
âWould your tail rattle?â Shane asked. âI think having a rattling tail would be awesome.â
âRai?â Myra asked.
Rai let out an exasperated sigh. âThis is Shane.â
âWeâve all established that Iâm Shane,â he said. âWhat I want to know is if those scale are soft or hard. Are they like shark scales that are rough one direction, and perfectly smooth the other?â
âWhat are you talking about?â Myra asked. âWhat do sharks have to do with my scales?â
âWhy are we talking about scales?â Shane asked. âIâm pretty sure you were introducing yourself.â
âYou brought up scales!â Myra growled.
âNo, I brought up tails. Which I should remind you, you donât have. Can you grow a tail?â
âNo! Why would I want a tail?â she snapped.
âI like tails,â Shane stated with a shrug.
âShane,â Rai groaned. âYouâre doing it again.â
âDoing what?â Shane asked. âI canât help the handsomeness. Sheâs bound to be drawn to me.â
Rai rolled her eyes. âThatâs very nice, dear. But Myra just wanted to introduce herself, and youâve gone and confused her.â
âSheâs not confused.â Turning to Myra, he asked, âAre you?â
âYes, I am,â Myra said. Running her hand over her arm, she was feeling her scales.
Chuckling, Shane held out his hand. âAs weâve all established, Iâm Shane. Welcome to the neighborhood. Did you bring a housewarming gift?â
Myra took his hand. âA gift?â
âI prefer pie, but Rai wonât make me one.â
âShane!â Rai growled. âEnough about pie!â
âI wonder if cherries are still in season?â Shane mused. âThereâs got to be some around here somewhere.â
âCherries?â Myra asked.
âFor the pie youâre making!â Shane chirped.
Myra glanced at Rai again. âI thought you were making the pie?â
âNope!â Shane chirped again. âRai is making a blueberry pie. Youâre in charge of the cherry.â
âYou want two pies?â
Rai hissed a slow breath. âGod help meâ¦â
âPraying wonât make that pie for you,â Shane said.
Throwing up her hands, Rai walked away. âAnd Iâve reached my limit.â
Myra regarded Rai longingly.
Shane chuckled. âSeriously, why are you introducing yourself to me? The others havenât.â
Turning back to him, Myra frowned. âI wanted to see who was bringing Descendants and humans together.â
Nodding, Shane crossed his arms. âIâm not some figure here to entertain you. We all have work to do today, and I need to make sure everything is flowing before I leave.â
âIââ
Shane held up his hand. âI would have found you today when I checked in. You came out here specifically to meet me. Are you scouting me?â
To his surprise, Myra nodded. âThat was my intention.â
âThank you for your honesty.â Shane stepped past her. âHow many of you are filling water?â
âThree,â Myra said, turning with him.
âThat will help. Are you disposing of the dirty water properly?â
âYes.â
Shane glanced at her. She handled me rambling pretty well. But first, the shadow cat, and now a serpent checking me out. I canât help but feel like Iâm going to be overwhelmed with essence before long.
Stepping up to the school, Shane opened the door for the two of them. âAre you getting along with the humans?â
âSo far,â Myra said. âIâll admit, itâs an adjustment. When Reginald asked for my assistance, I wasnât expecting to find a twice-bonded human leading everything.â
âNot fully bonded,â Shane said. âI need to merge with Reginaldâs essence still.â Pausing, he looked around the hallway. It had been cleaned of papers and books and was recently swept. The sound of the generator working in the distance made him smile. âWe need to change some of these bulbs.â
Myra glanced up at the ceiling. Shane watched her as the lights flickered, some of them out completely.
âHow did you get the generator working?â Myra asked.
âEssence.â Shane didnât expand.
Myra stared at him for a few seconds before walking. âIs there anything us water users should focus on?â
âYes.â Shane nodded. âWe need to make sure everyone works on their hygiene. Warm baths and herbs need to be collected to clean with.â Rubbing the bridge of his nose, he added, âThatâs just a small part of it. We need to ensure the dishes are cleaned properly, and the living quarters cleaned. How are you going to handle bodily waste?â
Myra frowned. âIâm not sureâ¦â
âFigure it out,â Shane ordered. Picking up his pace, he led the way to the kitchen.
Rai was talking with Marge when he entered.
âAre you done?â Rai asked him.
âYes,â Shane said with a smile. âShe was just going to figure out some of our hygiene problems.â
Myra glanced at him before straightening her back. âIf youâll excuse me, Rai.â
After Myra left out the door they came through, Shane stepped up to Rai. âThatâs two, Rai.â
âYeah,â she said softly.
âTwo?â Marge asked.
Shane pulled out a chair and sat. Once the two women were sat around the table with him, he explained, âTwo Descendants that have scouted me. I canât bond with another right now, but I have a feeling I wonât have to wait long until I have a third.â
Marge rubbed her mouth with furrowed brows.
Rai spoke up first. âThey are needed.â
âI know,â Shane said with a sigh. âBut the women are going to want more than to just be partners. Iâve noticed that Reginald seems even closer to me than when he started. Not in a romantic way, but an overprotective brother kind of way.â
Rai growled. âWe could find all men.â
Shane chuckled. âNo. Weâll handle them one at a time. But we both need to accept that the more we add, the stranger our relationships are going to be.â
âAnd youâre okay with that?â Marge asked.
âI have a feeling I donât have much of a choice,â Shane said. Tilting his chair back, he rested a foot on the table. âEverything that Rai is hinting at tells me that I need to grow stronger.â
âYouâre taking him to the capital?â Marge asked, turning to Rai.
âI havenât told him anything yet!â Rai hissed. âHe needs to finish Veronica first!â
Marge raised her brow before turning back to Shane. âYouâre okay with not knowing?â
âIâm not,â Shane admitted. âBut right now, I have my hands full of things that I never thought would be within my reach.â
Rai took his hand. âYouâre doing well, Shane.â
Nodding, he got up. âI have more people to check in with.â Pausing, he turned to Marge. âWill you be able to handle the town for a few weeks without me?â
âYes.â Marge smiled. âMake sure you check in on Jeremy.â
Shane turned to leave. âI will.â
***
Shadows wrapped tightly around Zila as she stood in the back of the gymnasium. The human she had come to scout was talking with a bedraggled man. Someone, or something, had roughed him up pretty badly.
What should I think of this Shane?
Standing completely still, Zila listened in to their conversation.
âYour chances of winning that beauty contest are getting worse,â Shane said.
The other human flipped him off, a gesture that Zila was still getting used to.
âGo to hell, Shane!â the man snapped.
Shane laughed and touched his friendâs shoulder gently. âIâm glad youâre healing. Iâm hoping that when I come back from the city, youâll be better.â
The other human touched Shaneâs hand. âThank you. If you didnât come for meâ¦â
What did Shane do that this human is thanking him? Zila asked herself. What are they to each other?
Shane dropped his hand off the humanâs shoulder. âI have more workers to check in with. If you can walk, the kitchen could use your help.â
âDo you think Iâm honestly going to volunteer to be near Marge when sheâs cooking?â the human asked.
Laughing, Shane shrugged. âThatâs fair.â
Whereâs the nonsense he was spouting earlier? Zila questioned. Does he only do that to the Descendants?
Zila had watched as the one known as Myra made a move on Shane. The serpent didnât even try to hide her intentions of scouting out the human. Then again, Zila had to admit that she did her best to hide. How the man saw her was still a mystery.
Shane stepped past his friend and started walking towards the door closest to Zilaâs hiding spot. Holding her breath, she followed him with her eyes. When he touched the handle, he paused.
âIf youâre going to spy, do me a favor and find out where Veronica is.â
Zila tensed, all of her instincts telling her to flee the man that could locate her in the shadows.
Before she could draw her next breath, Shane left.
Breathing out slowly, Zila shook her head. How? How can he find me?
She knew she wouldnât get the answer easily, but now she had a way to help him. He was heading to the city in a few hours. She would return first and find the information he needed. In exchange, she might learn what she wanted.
