Chapter 338 Hand Him Over to Another Person The seed of suspicion began to sprout in Charleneâs heart after listening to Elaineâs speculation. However, she had seen Brendan at Neve yesterday, and Neve was pretty far away from Alnwick, so what was going on?
When Charlene did not say anything, Elaine added, âWhat are you still waiting for, Charlene? Do you really want to hand over the man who youâve been in love with for so many years to that woman?
âShe got it easy and became his wife because she looks like you. Not only that, but sheâs also the reason you canât appear in public. Now sheâs going to steal your fiance away from you again! If you donât do anything right now, youâll lose what you have today!â
The things Elaine said reminded Charlene of her bitter past. A hint of coldness crossed her eyes. She was not going to go back to those days again.
âAlright, I know what I should do. Thank you so much, Elaine,â Charlene said gently.â Iâll get someone to send you the purse that just got released this year.â
Elaineâs eyes glowed with delight, but she pretended she did not want it. âYou donât have to do that. We are friends and should help each other.â
Charlene laughed and ended the call. As soon as she hung up the phone, her smile disappeared, and her face turned cold. She clenched her fists tightly and looked at the photo againâthe smile on the womanâs face in the photo stung her eyes greatly.
She did not understand why she was still so happy, even in her current state.
As for her, ever since Madame Brighthall learned it was someone else who had been keeping her company for those two years, she cut ties with her. She had tried to visit her several times but refused to see her.
She had lost Madame Brighthallâs support. If she lost Brendan againâ¦
She did not dare to think what would happen to her then. She gnashed her teeth tightly and went out.
Brendan had yet to recover from his injuries. He was still in a serious condition since the wound on his abdomen couldnât heal, so he had been recuperating in the villa. Besides, after what happened to Deirdre, he had been keeping himself in his room, and she could only see him when he was having a meal.
When Charlene appeared, Sam said sternly, âYouâve come at bad timing, Miss McKinney. Mr. Brighthall has an operation tomorrow, so heâs resting in his room now. You should come back the day after tomorrow.â
Charlene just wanted to find out whether the man in the photo was Brendan. She ignored what Sam said and pressed on. âSince he has an operation tomorrow, I should stay and take care of him. Iâm sure heâll be bored staying in his room alone. Iâll go up and keep him company.â
âMiss Mckinney-â
âSam.â Charleneâs face sank. âYou may have served Deirdre in the past, but sheâs gone now. Iâm sure you know whoâll be the future Mrs. Brighthall, so letâs not make this difficult for both of us.â
Sam froze. Charlene hastily rushed up to the second floor and pushed open the door to Brendanâs room.
The moment she entered the room, she was welcomed by darkness. The curtains were drawn tightly, and the only thing left in the room was the smell of wine and medicine, both of which made Charlene frown.
She looked toward the bed, and Brendan was sitting on the bed. His body was enveloped in the darkness, and he seemed dispirited. Even though he knew that Deirdre was still alive, it still did not give him enough motivation to keep living.
âBrendanâ¦â Charlene covered her nose and asked, âAre you all right?â
The man shuffled in his bed and frowned. âWhat are you doing here?â
âI⦠I just wanted to see you. I saw that you werenât in good condition when I had a meal with you yesterday. By the way, when is your operation? I want to keep you companyâ¦â
âTomorrow night,â he replied impatiently. âGet out of my room now. I want to rest.â
âAlright.â Charlene closed the door and looked at the time on her phone.
It had only been one hour since Elaine saw Deirdre. There was no way Brendan could have made his way back from Alnwick in such a short period. Apparently, the man in the photo was not Brendan.
