In a week spent at a lake house in Michigan, Olivia never felt more relaxed. The stress of tight schedules didn't exist, and she didn't once think about having to skip breakfast because she was running behind schedule.
She simply woke up when she wanted, enjoyed the beautiful scenery and spent time with Dylan. It was the perfect vacation.
And Dylan, was so excited himself to bring his girlfriend to one of his hidden locations. A small house to rent, lakeside with a gorgeous dock that led to fun afternoons of fishing, swimming or canoeing. Besides Tyler, Olivia was the only other person Dylan had ever brought there. And not once, did he regret his decision.
Even though they had been dating for almost three years, there were sides of their relationship that had yet to be explored. For the first time, Dylan watched Olivia grin up at the sun, stretching her arms wide as they canoed one afternoon. Hearing her squeal with glee when he taught her to fish, and surprise him by flicking lake water on his neck.
The nights were his favorite. Seeing her gaze at the stars, a ghost of a smile on her lips. Or when she cuddled against his side in front of a campfire, torso swallowed by his old sweatshirt. Especially how hyped up she got on s'mores, practically bouncing when she told him to try a Reese's cup instead of normal chocolate.
Olivia found herself in love with the mornings. Neither of them woke up from alarms blaring or found themselves exhausted. Light would pour in through the curtains, amplified by the pastel yellow wallpaper. From the bed, Olivia could see the sun rising over the waterâDylan asleep with his head buried against her neck and arms wrapped around her. And when he finally stirred, his lips would press a gentle kiss to her tanning skin and she would remark on the light redness of his cheeks after facing him.
It was simply a time for them to be themselves, with each other. They loved it.
Currently, knowing it was there last day, they enjoyed the view from the dock one last time. The sun had started to set, illuminating the sky with a mesh of pinks and purples and fading into a soft blue.
Dylan sat upright, legs over the edge with his feet in the cool water. Beside him, Olivia laid on her back, one of her arms partially covering her face. They had been silent for a few minutes, enjoying the sounds of cicadas and crickets chirping.
Eventually, Dylan released a sigh and leaned back. One of his arms moved to rest underneath his head and he shifted his body so he could look at Olivia.
A beautiful sight, he thought to himself, his lips quirking up. Her hair started to curl around her shoulders from the humidity that day, and only the tips of her fingers were visible from the large sweatshirt that he used to wear all the time. Observing the material now, he believed it looked much better on Olivia.
"Okay, you're either bored or doing that thing you do with your eyes."
Dylan stifled a laugh from hearing Olivia speak, her eyes still closed. "I have no idea what you're talking about," he said innocently.
Olivia lowered her arm to her side, opening her eyes as she turned her head to look at him. A smile threatened to break out onto her face, especially as he scooted closer to her. "You know exactly what I'm talking about," she replied. "You were staring at me."
"Well that's what people do when they look at beautiful art, right?"
Olivia rolled her eyes at his flirting, making his grin stretch wider. He leaned closer to her, so their noses barely brushed. Only then, did he ask, "Can we just stay here? I don't wanna go home."
"I don't either," Olivia admitted, moving so their fingers could intertwine. "Thank you for bringing me here. I absolutely love it."
"I'm glad, because I absolutely love you," Dylan stated, and chose to close the little distance between them. Olivia happily responded, her lips caught in his sweet kiss.
When they pulled back, Dylan returned the contagious smile Olivia sent him.
"I love you, too," she said genuinely, making his heart skip a beat. Her face then brightened and one of his eyebrows raised in curiosity. "And I have an idea."
"What?"
"Another night swim," she informed him, growing excited pretty quickly. "The last hurrah before we leave, you know? Whatcha think, bub?"
"I think that if it's anything like the last night swim we had, then I'm all in," he replied cheekily, causing Olivia's cheeks to become tinted pink. However, her smile didn't fade, even when she playfully pushed him away. Dylan laughed at her reaction, and sat up while she rose to her feet.
With a swift movement, Olivia pulled his sweatshirt up and over her head to reveal her swimsuit from earlier that afternoon. And after discarding her athletic shorts, she rested her hands on her hips and looked down at her boyfriend. "Are you gonna join me or not?"
Dylan wasn't ashamed of letting his eyes wander over her figure before he met her eyes to reply. "Absolutely."
Olivia chuckled, but didn't wait for him to take his shirt off. Instead, she shouted and cannon-balled into the lake, "Last one in sleeps on the couch!"
Dylan's jaw dropped, and he let his shirt fall on the deck beside her clothes. "Okay, that's not fair!" he defended when her head popped up above the surface. "You didn't even get me a chance."
Olivia only shrugged, moving her arms to stay afloat. "Should've moved faster, O'Brien. You snooze, you lose."
"Oh, we'll see about that."
Without warning, Dylan jumped in beside herâthe impact causing water to splash against Olivia's face. But she didn't mind. She laughed, especially when he emerged with his hair sticking to his forehead.
One of his arms wrapped to her back, pulling her body closer to him. "Are you really going to make me sleep on the couch?" He asked, his lips pulled into a pout. "On our last night here? Really?"
"Eh, maybe," she replied with a smile, moving her hand to push his hair out of his face. "Ask me again later."
Dylan adjusted the way he held her, both of her legs now around his waist while he kept them above the water. "What if I just refuse to let you go unless you change your mind?"
Olivia chuckled, lifting her hands to be at the base of his neck. She leaned towards him, her lips grazing his as her fingers fiddled with his hair. "I could stay here all night," she accepted his challenge, Dylan unable to hide his smile from the way her eyes mischievously twinkled.
"Sounds good to me," he agreed and didn't let another moment waste. He kissed her like he had on the dock, feeling the familiar electricity arise goosebumps along his skin.
Their breaths mingled together, and all of their thoughts were only on each other. Worries of the past or future didn't matter; they only focused on the present.
Dylan placed one hand on her cheek, the other on the curve of her hip. Olivia hummed against his mouth, pulling him as close as she could. By the time they parted to breathe, their lips became swollen and their hearts practically beat out of their chests. Yet, neither of them could've been any happier.
"What do you say about this becoming a regular thing?" Dylan asked after a few seconds, his thumb brushing back a lose strand of her hair.
"Um, I'm pretty sure this has been a normal thing for almost three years," Olivia teased, not understanding what his question truly meant.
Dylan cracked a grin, but shook his head. "Not our relationship, string bean," he said with a slight laugh. "I meant coming to the lakeâwhich in turn, I guess, means having our relationship continue...if that's alright with you."
"That is very alright with me," Olivia agreed to his idea beaming, her hands cupping his cheeks as she pressed another quick kiss to his lips. "We could make it, like, an annual retreat. Just the two of us, you and me."
"You and me," Dylan echoed, a soft smile overtaking his face when he looked into her eyes. They matched the water they swam in, love visible with every hypnotic swirl. The streaks of orange and pink in the sky only amplified the light in her irises, causing him to fall even more in love with herâwhich he didn't think was possible.
Their lives were often chaotic; both of them being successful actors in balancing a TV show and movie deals. After filming another season of Teen Wolf, they would have to separate for months. Olivia would fly to New Mexico for The Space Between Us, while Dylan traveled to British Columbia for the final installment of the Maze Runner.
Coming to the lake would be their last getaway for a little, and Dylan felt grateful to be holding her in his arms and being able to express his love in person and not through a screen. And seeing his smile and the light in his eyes, Olivia felt the exact same way.
