The Medical University was shrouded in a deep silence under the night sky, with only the occasional rustling sound emerging from the shrubbery.
From the outside, the tree branches extending from inside the fence resembled a row of black shadows. When the wind blew, they twisted and deformed as if ghosts were struggling to escape from their prison.
âClackâ¦â
A staggering figure appeared on the empty street. His arms hung weakly at his sides and swayed back and forth. His head was slightly tilted, and his blood-red eyes stared at the swaying shadows on his twisted face.
When he reached the fence, he stared blankly at the branches. Suddenly, something seemed to catch his attention, and he looked up.
âThud!â
A large white figure descended from the sky, rapidly enlarging in his pupils.
The last thing this Zombie saw was this white figure effortlessly leaping into the bushes as his forehead was stomped on.
He wobbled for a moment before collapsingâ¦
âI didnât notice earlier, but Xiao Bai, it seems you stepped on something, right?â
Yu Shiran lightly jumped off Xiao Baiâs back in the bushes, whispering.
âMeGuâ¦â Xiao Bai shook his head with a silly expression.
Two other figures were sitting on its back. One was looking around curiously with wide eyes, while the other carried a Scythe and couldnât hide the excitement on her face.
They were Ye Lian and Xia Na, who had received Ling Moâs signal a few minutes ago and rushed to the Medical University with Xiao Bai and Yu Shiran.
âLing-Ge is⦠over there.â Ye Lian raised her hand, pointing towards the depths of the Medical University.
Xia Na grinned and said, âHehe, this time weâre acting on our ownâ¦â
âWhy are you so happy?â Yu Shiran frowned and asked. She couldnât fathom what was enjoyable about helping the Sausage Humans. It would be more interesting to go hunting or something, even if they couldnât eat, at least they could watchâ¦
âNo, Iâm serious.â Xia Na shook her head. âThis mission is really important. Donât take it lightly. Ling-Ge is probably restricted in his movements and canât search by himself. We need to attack from both inside and outside to get this done⦠Forget it, you all look like you donât understandâ¦â
Yu Shiran rolled her eyes and took out a piece of paper from her pocket. Unfolding it with a dissatisfied look, she said, âThis is the map he left. These areas have been scouted by Xiao Bai, and he marked the general areas we need to search. Here and here⦠But even with the map, we still need to be careful as there are patrols inside.â
âDidnât expect you to get this smart following Black Silk aroundâ¦â Xia Na complimented.
âWellâ¦â Yu Shiran started to look a bit proud but quickly froze.
Why does that somehow not sound rightâ¦
âBy the way, whereâs the other one?â Yu Shiran referred to Li Yalin.
Xia Na chuckled, âSheâs with that half-human, to ensure her safety.â
Yu Shiran paused for a moment, then nodded appreciatively. âSheâs truly a Zombie with self-restraint. If it were me⦠that human would be dead by now.â
Meanwhile, inside the residential building.
Xu Shuhan was curled up in a corner, on the verge of tears, looking at Li Yalin standing in front of her.
Li Yalinâs slender hand was gripping her shoulder. It looked delicate but could easily tear her apart in seconds.
But that wasnât the most terrifying part. What truly sent chills down Xu Shuhanâs spine was Li Yalinâs intense gaze locked onto her.
âWhy are you staring at me like that?â Xu Shuhan bit her lip and asked.
Li Yalin blinked her eerie red and amber eyes, âXia Na told me to keep an eye on you.â
ââ¦â Xu Shuhan looked at Li Yalinâs strange eyes, almost crying, and asked, âThen why did your eyes change color?â
âStared too long.â Li Yalin said, extending her pink tongue to lick her lips.
âAhâ¦â Xu Shuhan immediately turned her head away, trembling all over, and silently screamed, âHelpâ¦â
In the bushes, Xia Na snapped out of her thoughts and nodded affirmatively. âYes, her self-restraint is still trustworthy⦠I suppose. Alright, letâs start our mission. As Ling-Ge instructed, we mustnât split up, nor should we do anything dangerous. If we are discovered, we need to immediately signal him, and he will help divert everyoneâs attention.â
âHow will he divert them?â Yu Shiran asked curiously.
Xia Na pondered for a moment and said, âIf all else fails⦠perhaps something like shouting into the wind could work.â
âLike that⦠Can I do it?â Yu Shiran continued to ask.
âWhen Ling-Ge returns, you can ask him to teach youâ¦â
Just as Ye Lianâs group was infiltrating the Medical University, Ling Moâs controlled Zombie Puppet reached the latter part of the hidden Laboratory.
Following the lead of a variation female Zombie, Ling Mo had already seen several different variation zombies.
Judging by the extent of their bodily mutations, they were all artificially induced after being captured here. Some were like the variation female Zombie, who originally had significant internal risks, while others were clearly injected with some sort of virus, leading to partial mutations.
The mutations of these variation zombies focused primarily on bodily modifications. On the other hand, the initial mutation forms that generally appeared when a regular Zombie evolved to the dominant level were often special abilities derived from the virus.
Ling Mo thought that, except for the Progenitor, most of the mutants seemed to resemble pathological changes, whereas the latter were genuine gene mutations. Some special abilities might seem incredible, but in reality, many similar traits exist in the natural world, so it wasnât surprising. However, when these traits appeared in Zombies, the feeling was entirely different.
The situation with these variation zombies made Ling Mo think about deeper aspects. What exactly were the variation viruses injected by the Experimental Group, and where did they come fromâ¦
âHmm, thereâs another door hereâ¦â Turning to see he had reached the end, Ling Mo noticed another door ahead.
But unlike the standard security doors used here, this was a heavy Iron Doorâ¦
Ling Mo took out the keyring again and tried several keys until he finally heard a light âclick.â
âCreaaakâ¦â
As the door slowly opened, an incredibly strange scent wafted out immediately.
This smell was even more pungent than the others he had encountered, but it contained a faint trace of the virusâs scent.
Hearing the faint sound of Iron Chains being dragged inside, Ling Mo suddenly realized he might have stumbled upon something extraordinaryâ¦
âClick, click, click, clickâ¦â
The door clearly hadnât been lubricated in a long time, and it emitted a teeth-grating noise as it finally opened all the way. Concurrently, the interior of the room came into Ling Moâs viewâ¦
Iron Chains-this was Ling Moâs first impression of the room.
Chains embedded in the Ceiling, secured to the walls on all four sides-thick chains, all converging on a Dark Shadow in the middle of the room.
What required so many chains to restrain wasnât some exceptionally formidable-looking Zombie but a male Zombie that had lost both arms and was tied up like a mummy. This Zombieâs skin was completely wrinkled, making it hard to determine his age from appearance alone, though his deathly white face looked eerily like a dried corpse that had crawled out of a grave. His killing power was not visible, but his level of terror was extreme.
He was staring at Ling Mo, continuously struggling, causing the heavy chains to rattle ceaselessly.
Seeing him only trembling in place, Ling Mo was momentarily puzzled, then his gaze shifted to the Zombieâs feet.
âThatâs brutalâ¦â
Two pieces of Rebar were driven through the Zombieâs heels and bent into a half-circle, effectively pinning him to the ground. This setup made it impossible to escape unless the feet were completely destroyed. With a chain around his neck, he couldnât bend down, making it impossible even to bite through his own ankles.
Though the Zombie was in a Frenzy, losing almost all capacity for resistance rendered his struggles meaningless.
Ling Mo felt a chill run down his spine. He could tell that this Zombieâs mental state was comparable to Ye Lianâs. Seeing it confined here, Ling Moâs sense of danger began to rise.
The Zombie gnashed his teeth violently, and a strange glint suddenly flashed in his eyes as he stared at Ling Mo.
Ling Mo keenly caught that glint.
âHmm? Does this guy have Intelligence?â
Ling Mo remained motionless at the doorway, curiously observing the Zombie for a while.
Seeing the Zombie make no further movements, Ling Mo pondered and then slowly took two steps back.
Sure enough, the Zombieâs expression immediately turned anxious.
He wriggled vigorously a couple of times, baring his teeth at Ling Mo, trying to open his restrained mouth wide and letting out a âmmph mmphâ roar.
This reaction made Ling Mo pause again, then a slight smirk appeared on his face.
The Zombie Puppet took two steps forward and then two steps back, waving its hand in the processâ¦
âMmph mmph mmphâ¦â the Zombie continued to wiggle, eyes wide open, looking as if it wanted to devour someone.
But Ling Mo just grinned and walked nonchalantly closer to the Zombie.
Seeing Ling Mo approach, the Zombie trembled even more violently, but Ling Mo stopped less than two meters away from it.
The Zombieâs expression froze instantly. It stared intensely at Ling Mo, straining its neck forward as far as it couldâ¦
âDo you⦠want to eat me?â
Ling Mo controlled the Zombie Puppet, asking in a labored voice. At the same time, he grinned, squeezing out a rather unsightly smile.
The Zombieâs eyes widened again.
âYouâve been wiggling for a while but didnât really struggle. All that baring and gnashing of teeth, werenât you just trying to lure me in?â Ling Mo spoke slowly, but the Zombie clearly understood everything. It wobbled its body, locking its gaze on Ling Mo, and its expression gradually shifted from Frenzy to calm.
It had already realized that this fellow Zombie was not the edible typeâ¦
