His brother.
I try to shake off the nerves. I try to smile at the boy studying my face, studying the pathetic pieces of fabric barely covering my body. How did I not know Adam had a brother? How could I have never known?
James turns to Adam. âThis is Juliette?â
Iâm standing here like a lump of nonsense. I donât remember my manners. âYou know who I am?â
James spins back in my direction. âOh yeah. Adam talks about you a lot.â
I flush and canât help but glance at Adam. Heâs staring at a point on the floor. He clears his throat.
âItâs really nice to meet you,â I manage.
James cocks his head. âSo do you always dress like that?â
Iâd like to die a little.
âHey, kid,â Adam interrupts. âJuliette is going to be staying with us for a little while. Why donât you go make sure you donât have any underwear lying on the floor, huh?â
James looks horrified. He darts into the darkness without another word.
Itâs quiet for so many seconds I lose count. I hear some kind of drip in the distance.
I take a deep breath. Bite my bottom lip. Try to find the right words. Fail. âI didnât know you had a brother.â
Adam hesitates. âIs it okay . . . that I do? Weâll all be sharing the same space and Iââ
My stomach drops onto my knees. âOf course itâs okay! I justâI meanâare you sure itâs okayâfor him? If Iâm here?â
âThereâs no underwear anywhere,â James announces, marching forward into the light. I wonder where he disappeared to, where the house is. He looks at me. âSo youâre going to be staying with us?â
Adam intervenes. âYeah. Sheâs going to crash with us for a bit.â
James looks from me to Adam back to me again. He sticks out his hand. âWell, itâs nice to finally meet you.â
All the color drains from my face. My heart is pounding in my ears. My knees are about to break. I canât stop staring at his small hand outstretched, offered to me.
âJames,â Adam says a little curtly.
James starts laughing. âI was only kidding.â He drops his hand.
âWhat?â I can barely breathe. My head is spinning, confused.
âDonât worry,â James says, still chuckling. âI wonât touch you. Adam told me all about your magical powers.â He rolls his eyes.
âAdamâtoldâheâwhat?â
âHey, maybe we should go inside.â Adam clears his throat a little too loudly. âIâll just grab our bags real quickââ And he jogs off toward the tank. Iâm left staring at James. He doesnât conceal his curiosity.
âHow old are you?â he asks me.
âSeventeen.â
He nods. âThatâs what Adam said.â
I bristle. âWhat else did Adam tell you about me?â
âHe said you donât have parents, either. He said youâre like us.â
My heart is a stick of butter, melting recklessly on a hot summer day. My voice softens. âHow old are you?â
âIâll be eleven next year.â
I grin. âSo youâre ten years old?â
He crosses his arms. Frowns. âIâll be twelve in two years.â
I think I already love this kid.
The cabin light shuts off and for a moment weâre immersed in absolute darkness. A soft click and a faint circular glow illuminates the view. Adam has a flashlight.
âHey, James? Why donât you lead the way for us?â
âYes, sir!â He skids to a halt in front of Adamâs feet, offers us an exaggerated salute, and runs off so quickly thereâs no possible way to follow him. I canât help the smile spreading across my face.
Adamâs hand slips into mine as we move forward. âYou okay?â
I squeeze his fingers. âYou told your ten-year-old brother about my magical powers?â
He laughs. âI tell him a lot of things.â
âAdam?â
âYeah?â
âIsnât your house the first place Warner will go looking for you? Isnât this dangerous?â
âIt would be. But according to public records, I donât have a home.â
âAnd your brother?â
âWould be Warnerâs first target. Itâs safer for him where I can watch over him. Warner knows I have a brother, he just doesnât know where. And until he figures it outâwhich he willâwe have to prepare.â
âTo fight?â
âTo fight back. Yeah.â Even in the dim light of this foreign space I can see the determination holding him together. It makes me want to sing.
I close my eyes. âGood.â
âWhatâs taking you so long?â James shouts in the distance.
And weâre off.
The parking garage is located underneath an old abandoned office building buried in the shadows. A fire exit leads directly up to the main floor.
James is so excited heâs jumping up and down the stairs, running forward a few steps only to run back to complain weâre not coming fast enough. Adam catches him from behind and lifts him off the floor. He laughs. âYouâre going to break your neck.â
James protests but only halfheartedly. Heâs all too happy to have his brother back.
A sharp pang of some distant kind of emotion hits me in the heart. It hurts in a bittersweet way I canât place. I feel oddly warm and numb at the same time.
Adam punches a pass code into a keypad by a massive steel door. Thereâs a soft click, a short beep, and he turns the handle.
Iâm stunned by what I see inside.
