âPut on the MV-02W. Replenish ammo. System self-test completed.â
Zack ticked off the mental checklist as he readied himself. The battle-scarred War Machine stood waiting in the corner, its iron-black paint scraped and worn from countless battles. The damage only added to its brutal, unforgiving appearance, each scar telling a story of survival and war.
After securing his armor, Zack stepped out of the Mansion, the heavy thuds of his metallic boots echoing against the walls.
âBrother, are you heading out? Do you need me to come with you?â Little Annie emerged from the laboratory, her hands smudged with grease and her eyes wide with curiosity.
âNo, just keep an eye on your sister Sophia. Make sure she doesnât wander off.â Zackâs voice was calm as he flicked up his mask, flashing a rare, teasing smile at Annie.
âAlright.â Annie nodded obediently and trotted upstairs, leaving Zack to his mission.
He exited the Mansion and was about to take off when a thought struck him. Turning abruptly, he walked toward the swimming pool. The heavy footsteps of the Armor stirred Erza from her sunbathing on a lounge chair. She sat up groggily, her face scrunching in confusion. âAnother wave of zombies?!â Erza blurted, already tense.
âNo,â Zack replied flatly. âYouâre coming with me.â
His tone was casual, but the unyielding authority behind it left no room for argument. âDo I get a choice in this?â Erza tried, her voice tinged with hope.
âI wasnât asking.â
Without waiting for her reply, Zack turned and headed for the helicopter. Erza groaned but followed reluctantly, muttering complaints under her breath. As they boarded, Erza sighed dramatically. âWhy a helicopter? Canât you just fly with that armor of yours?â
âCan you fly?â Zack shot back, annoyed.
âWell, not yet,â Erza said, grinning mischievously. âBut if you made me a suit like Annie and Sophiaâs, I could! Big deal, Iâll even marry you if thatâs what it takes!â
âShut it!â Zack growled, slamming his visor shut. âEgo, mute external audio.â
The AI complied immediately, silencing Erzaâs chatter. For the first time in hours, Zack enjoyed blessed quiet. Erza pouted but eventually retreated to her seat. âStingy,â she muttered.
The flight grew peaceful, the drone of the helicopterâs rotors a soothing backdrop. Egoâs voice broke the silence. âSir, weâre approaching the destination.â
Zack reopened his sound system and flipped up his visor, just in time to hear Erzaâs excited gasp. âWow!â Erza pressed her face against the window, marveling at the sprawling mountain range below. Her eyes sparkled with wonder.
âNever seen mountains before?â Zack asked dryly.
âNot from this high up,â Erza admitted, still glued to the window. âItâs beautiful.â

âEnjoy it while you can,â Zack said. âIt wonât feel as nice once weâre on the ground.â
The helicopter began its descent, landing on a flat area between two mountains. The once-functional helipad and parking lot were overrun by wild plants, vines snaking through rusted vehicles and crumbling structures. âSir, scans show traces of mutated animals nearby. Proceed with caution,â Ego advised as the helicopter touched down.
Zack stepped out first, his boots crunching against the overgrown vegetation. Erza followed, stretching and breathing deeply. âAh, fresh air! Havenât smelled this in years!â she exclaimed, practically bouncing with excitement.
âThe airâs clean, slightly high in oxygen, and safe to breathe,â Zack confirmed, reading the HUD display. He flipped up his visor, taking a deep breath himself.
âItâs nice,â he admitted, surprising Erza.
âAlright, enough sightseeing,â Zack said firmly. âWe have work to do.â
The duo headed toward the Armory, a bunker carved into the mountain itself. It was surrounded by rusted sentry towers and barbed wire, all entangled with thick vines and moss. Vehicles once parked nearby were unrecognizable under the overgrowth.
âThis place is a jungle!â Erza said, staring at the greenery consuming the area.
Zack frowned. âSomethingâs off. The factory data showed regular shipments up until the outbreak. This place has only been abandoned for a month.â
Erza froze. âA month? How the hell did the plants grow this fast?â
âExactly,â Zack muttered. His visor snapped shut, activating a full-spectrum scan.
âDonât scare me like that!â Erza yelped, pulling a lighter from her pocket as if it were a weapon.
âStay alert,â Zack ordered, his tone grim. âWhatever caused this didnât happen naturally.â
After crossing the weed-covered square, Zack and Erza reached the entrance of the Armory. Calling it a gate was generousâit was more like the mouth of a tunnel, shrouded in eerie darkness. âThis way,â Zack said, switching on the small lamp attached to his shoulder.
The lamp might have been compact, but its beam lit up the tunnel as if it were daylight. Under the bright light, the walls of the tunnel came into focus, revealing they were covered in strange lavender vines that looked like creeping ivy. But these were different. The moment the light touched them, the vines curled their leaves inward, almost like mimosa plants.
âCreepy,â Erza muttered, inching closer to Zack. The further they went, the stranger it all became. âYou sure itâs smart to bring a girl into this?â Erza whispered nervously, clutching a lighter in one hand as though it were a lifeline.
âRelax. If thereâs real danger, Iâll definitely leave you behind,â Zack replied without even glancing back.
âWhat the hell, are you even a man?â Erza shot back.
âI am, but you? You donât even count as a woman in my bookâmaybe not even human.â Zackâs voice was flat, his tone unwavering.
Before Erza could respond, Zack quickened his pace, heading deeper into the tunnel. âDamn it, what kind of man says stuff like thatâ¦â Erza grumbled, but the moment Zackâs light disappeared ahead, she panicked. âHey, wait for me!â she yelped, rushing to catch up.
Not long after entering, Zack noticed something troubling. The vines were no longer confined to the walls; they were now growing thick and wild, weaving across the tunnel floor and ceiling. The once-spacious tunnel, wide enough for two trucks to pass side by side, had shrunk dramatically. The dense vines had tangled together, leaving only a narrow gap just big enough for one person to squeeze through. âHold up,â Zack ordered, stopping abruptly. His instincts screamed trap.
âSir,â Egoâs calm voice echoed in Zackâs earpiece, âIâve scanned known plant types and found no match for this species.â
âI figured as much,â Zack muttered. His expression hardened as the Vulcan machine gun mounted on his shoulder whirred to life, aiming directly at the dense wall of vines ahead.
The barrel began spinning.
âUh⦠what are you doing?â Erza asked, her eyes wide with alarm. Before she could finish, the thunderous roar of gunfire filled the tunnel, the sound amplified by the enclosed space.
The Vulcan spat out flames as countless 7.62mm rounds shredded through the vines. Leaves and branches flew everywhere, dark red sap oozing from the torn tendrils.
âSir,â Egoâs voice cut through the noise, âanalysis of the sap reveals traces of human tissue.â
Zackâs expression darkened. Before he could react further, a rustling sound filled the air.
The vines on the walls began to writhe, twisting like hundreds of small, dark purple snakes. They moved toward Zack and Erza with alarming speed.
