Chapter 101: Chapter 101

Over the next few days, Amy was like my shadow and it was infuriating. I could not go anywhere without her tagging along and I knew it was for my safety but it was irritating and I wanted nothing more than to just scream for her to leave me alone but I knew it would only raise her suspicions.

I was forced to endure her constant presence and what was worse was that Darius liked it. He still didn't trust Jared completely so he loved as Amy was always around me. He said it made him feel safer knowing that I had someone watching me. I had resigned myself to locking myself in the room for the entire day because I felt it was better than having a human shadow.

I was locked in the room when I heard a knock on my window. The action made me jump and I was even more shocked when I realized it was Jared. I knew it had something to do with the hunters so I locked my door and allowed him in.

"What the hell are you doing here and why didn't you use the door like a normal person?' I spat once he was safely within my room walls.

"Darius doesn't want me near your room. That isn't important right now, we need to leave."

"What do you mean leave? I'm not going anywhere with you unless I am sure of where we are going and someone knows where we are going."

"Look, it is just you and Amy here and she is not the one they want- you are. If they come here and realize that you aren't here then they are going to leave. My job is to keep you safe so come with me."

He grabbed my arm but I pulled it out of his grip.

"What are you talking about Jared? Who are you keeping me safe from? I don't understand what is happening."

He let out a sigh and ran his hands through his hair. "I cannot explain it now but I need you to trust me. I know you have no reason to but I will explain everything once we get into the car."

I hesitated. I could have said no and screamed out for Amy. He would have been caught and everything would have been over but something inside of me urged me to believe him. Something told me that the Jared I knew was still in there and that was what had me reluctantly nodding.

We went out through my room and we had almost made it to the back door when I heard a throat clear behind us. I turned to see Amy with her hands crossed over her chest as she watched us. There was hurt and betrayal in her eyes and I didn't know how to explain to her that it wasn't what she thought.

"I knew it was you," she said to Jared. "Darius would love to hear about this. How could you after everything he did for you? He saved you from those rogues. You owe him your life."

"That is exactly why I am doing this."

Before anyone could ask what he meant, he walked over to her and struck somewhere on her neck that had her crumpling to the ground in a heap. I stood there with my eyes wide but he rushed over to me and grabbed my arm.

"We don't have time."

He pulled me out of the house and towards his car which was hidden in the woods. I knew how irresponsible it was to be going with him when no one knew where we were and I knew that Darius would kill me once he found me but, at that moment, I didn't

care.

As soon as Jared started the car, I turned to him. "You better start talking."

"I knew about the hunters long before any of you did," he began. "The moment you came into Darius' life, I started to look into you. Darius is like my brother and I wanted to make sure that you weren't going to be a liability. I found out about your parent's death and I uncovered the truth about the brakes. I didn't think it was important at the time but I kept looking into you and I found out about Brandon. He seemed interesting because he had no past."

"What do you mean by he had no past?"

"There was nothing about him anywhere so I searched further and found out that his name wasn't Brandon- it was Holden. I found out about the hunters and I knew there was something I was missing so I searched for them and I made them believe that I wanted out from Darius. They trusted me because they needed someone on the inside. I had access to their files and I had been searching for a sign that something was amiss and I found it today."

"Stop beating around the bush and tell me what you found."

Jared sighed and turned to me as he spoke. "The hunters killed your parents."

My entire world stopped and I stared at Jared like he had grown horns. He looked sympathetic and there was something else in his eyes that I couldn't put my finger on but it looked like guilt. I couldn't believe his words because if they were true then it meant that Brandon- Holden- whoever- knew about it before he even met me.

"I saw the files and they told me. They trusted me enough to let me in on it. Your parents found out about them and they were going to warn some other wolf packs because the hunters don't want peace and unity, they want to control the werewolves. They wanted to use your parents to control the Lunar pack but when they wouldn't agree, they were killed."

"Brandon knows about it."

"He drove the car," he said the words softly. "He thought you had died as well but then he saw you in the city and I don't know why he dated you but I know it couldn't have been for anything good."

"You didn't betray Darius," I said stupidly and the corner of his lips quirked up.

"Of course I didn't, I was a bit insulted that you all thought I would."

"Where are we going now?"

"The bar, the only place you are safe is by Darius' side."

I was so concentrated on his words that I didn't notice a car coming towards us. I barely had time to yell out before the car slammed into us throwing us off the path. The car spun and I saw Jared struggling to get control back before he slammed into a tree. He groaned on impact and I slammed my head on the window. My head throbbed but at least it wasn't bleeding.

"Are you okay?" Jared asked and I mumbled something unintelligible. "We need to get out of here. I am sure it is them. I'm trying to mind-link Darius but he isn't answering. I can tell Ian but I don't know how fast they can get here."

I was barely concentrating due to the ringing in my ears but I saw Jared detach the head of the seat and he shattered the window at his side because mine was smashed against the side of the tree. He helped me take off my seat belt and he helped me out of the window first before getting out.

I was unsteady on my feet and he wrapped his arms around my shoulder. The car that ran us off the road was nowhere to be seen but I knew they had to be a distance away.

I asked and he opened his mouth to speak when two loud shots went through the air and Jared jerked in my hold. "What's wrong?"

He fell to his knees and that was when I saw the blood pooling at the back of his shirt. I fell to my knees immediately and tried to press my hands against the wounds. I didn't know what I was doing but I read somewhere that applying pressure on a wound was the best thing to do.

"No, you can't die," I instructed him. "We have to get out of here. Is Ian coming?" Jared placed his hand on my knee but his hold was weak.

"Run," his voice was barely over a whisper and I shook my head as tears gathered in my eyes. I couldn't leave him here after everything he did for me. "Run, Leindra. They can't get to you."

Tears dripped freely down my cheeks and like the coward that I was, I ran. I left him bleeding on the forest floor and I ran. I didn't know where I was going but I ran hoping that I would either burst out at the house or the road so I could find my way to the bar and to Darius.

I could hear footsteps and it only spurred me to move faster. I saw the road within reach and I pushed myself to go faster but I was tackled to the ground by a body. I looked up expecting to see Brandon but I saw the young woman from the meeting. She smiled down at me cruelly and I reared my head back and slammed my head into her nose. She cursed and I was able to push her off and run but I was grabbed by Brandon.

“Let go of me,” I tried to push him off but he was too strong. "I hate you, you fucking bastard. Let go of me."

"We can do this the easy way or hard way, Leindra."

"You killed Jared."

"That was a necessary evil. You are either with us or against us and we know where he stood. I do not want to hurt you, now, stop fighting me."

"Knock her out," I heard the woman scream. I glanced at her and I felt a sick sense of pride when I saw her clutching her broken nose.

I bit his arm and he screamed but he didn't let me go. Instead, I felt him place a cloth over my mouth. I tried to fight him off but my movements were getting sluggish. "Sleep, Leindra," he ordered and I went limp in his arms.
