Mistress Leslie was dressed in a mink-colored velvet coat, her gray hair neatly curled at the nape of her neck. She carried a purse in her hand and looked fatigued from the journey, as she looked as if she had just arrived.
Armand Bernieâs face paled at that moment and he turned to Matthew Nelson as he wondered if it was because he had witnessed her embarrassment that day, and that was why he notified his grandmother of her whereabouts.
Matthew didnât bother to answer her as he didnât have to.
âStop looking at him, I was the one who told him.â Boyce was also surprised when he saw Mrs. Leslie. A few days before, Mistress Leslie had called him every day to complain and sob, Boyce had no choice but to reveal her address. Who knew that Mistress Leslie would actually come looking for them?
âYouâ¦â Armand was angry that he was not to tell Mistress Leslie where he was.
He would have no freedom if the old lady was there to catch him.
âWhat!â Mistress Leslie snatched Armandâs ear and pulled him âSilly boy, are you taking advantage of the fact that Iâm an old woman and trying to trick me? You said youâre getting married at the end of the year. Iâd like to meet your bride.â This unexpected scene puzzled Dolores.
Matthew walked up to her and whispered in her ear, âThis is Armandâs grandmother, his parents died when he was young and his grandmother raised him.â Dolores realized what was happening.
Not surprisingly, Armandâs expression changed when he saw Madame Leslie.
For the first time, she saw Armand so terrified of someone.
âOuch, Grandma, Grandma, I made a mistake, I made a mistake, could you let me keep my dignity since there are so many people watching us? Pulling ears is even more embarrassingâ Armand confessed his mistake as he begged for forgiveness.
Mrs. Leslie looked around and her eyes roamed over Theresa and finally settled on Dolores. She looked her up and down and smiled, âYou areâ¦â
âItâs Miss Nelson.â Armand didnât wait for Dolores to respond and answer, for he was worried that old woman might misunderstand her.
Nor did he learn that neither of them had married. She looked around again and found that Matthew was standing very close to her. Then she understood, but at the same time she felt confused, for she knew Armandâs two good friends, Boyce and Matthew, but she had not heard that either of them had married.
âWhen did they get married, why didnât they invite me to their wedding party?â
There was no celebration when Matthew and Dolores got married. They simply obtained a marriage certificate. It was Abbot Baron who took Dolores to apply for it.
The few people close to Matthew were the only ones who knew he was married.
She got Matthew all the way there by asking that question.
He would have held a grant wedding ceremony to marry Dolores to let everyone know he was married and that his wife was Dolores if he had known he would someday have to face this.
âThere was no wedding celebration done for us, soâ¦â Dolores answered on Matthewâs behalf to bail him out.
âOh, I seeâ¦â Mrs. Leslie then realized that there were two little girls standing next to her. Due to the cold weather, both girls were wearing down jackets Simona was wearing a light green tone jacket with a fur collar, underneath she was wearing a short black tweed skirt. She also wore short boots and her hair was pulled back in a ponytail that exposed her broad forehead. She opened her eyes clear and bright, her lips were pink and she made a slight pout that made her look friendly when she spoke.
âGood morning, Grandma.â Simona had a smart mouth with which she greeted people.
Mrs. Leslie found the girl to be charming and beautiful with her hand over her heart.
âOhâ¦â
Armand was quick to cut her off as Mistress Leslie had just replied, âHey, itâs wrong, you canât call her grandma.â
âSimona, look, sheâs my grandmother, your father and I are from the same generation, right?â. Armand bent down to Simona and explained.
Simona had no idea what Armand was saying.
She blinked. Armand was calling her grandmother. Shouldnât she call her grandmother too?
âSimona, in the future, you must not refer to Armand as uncle,â Boyce interrupted.
âBoyce!â Armand was very angry since he was the one who gave Mrs. Leslie the address.
Would he get caught if he didnât?
âWhat are you yelling for? Youâve frightened the girl.â
âStop bullying Boyce,â Mistress Leslie said as she snatched Armandâs ear again and tossed him aside.
âHi, Iâm your grandson. Whose side should you take?â Armand felt hurt.
âBoyce would never lie to me like you. I tell you, at the end of the year, if you donât get married, Iâll break your leg. You seeâ¦â
âHow adorable they are,â said Mrs. Leslie as she tugged his ears to show him the two boys.
Mistress Leslie smacked her lips repeatedly when she saw Samuel. The boy looked quite handsome and, upon closer inspection, she discovered that he was identical to Matthew. From the contours of the little face, she could tell that he and Matthew were cast in the same mold.
She didnât need to be introduced as she knew those two children must be Matthewâs.
Armand clicked his tongue as well and said, âWho could be as lucky as Matthew? How he had a pair of twins all of a sudden. Not to mention that they were actually birds of the same feather and the key point is that both children have inherited the good qualities of their parents, as the boy is bright and the girl is cute. They are all Matthewâs. How can I not be jealous of this?â
âForget about it. I canât have twins, even if I marry my wife.â What, they were twins? Mrs. Leslieâs eyes widened.
She looked at Simona and then at Samuel, yes they did look alike, Samuel being slightly taller. At first, she assumed they were two children of the same mother, but she didnât expect them to be twins, so Mistress Leslie became even more exasperated, âLook, look. You can have such an adorable pair of children without doing anything special. You must have done a lot of good deeds in the past life.â
Armand would like to slap himself, since originally, due to the fact that he was not married, Madame Leslie was keeping an eye on him. Not to mention that she had known that Matthew had twins. It was likely that she was envious and might force him to have children.
Armand was now in a desperate situation.
âCan we come back a day later, Matthew?â Although Armand was dissatisfied with his grandmotherâs pursuit, anyway, it was his grandmother who was the closest person, who was now so old and exhausted from her journey that she wanted to allow him to relax and rest.
Matthew was in a good mood and hummed faintly.
He was exceptionally vigorous in the business world, but he was an ordinary person. He was an ordinary father who felt happy after hearing someone praise his children.
He felt grateful toward Dolores, who gave birth to the lovely pigeon couple for him and allowed him to be a father.
He wrapped his hands around Doloresâ waist.
Dolores glared at him, there were a lot of people and it made her feel weird. She pulled away carefully, Matthewâs hand remained empty. He wasnât about to let her go and as he was about to do it again, Dolores squatted down to pick up her daughter and took two steps away. She smiled and said, âArmand, stay with Grandma. I donât think sheâs had breakfast since she came so early and now the restaurant must still be serving breakfast.â
âItâs Miss Nelson, Grandma, come on, you must not have had breakfast at this early hour. Let me buy you some food,â Armand said as he grabbed Mistress Leslieâs arm.
Mrs. Leslie smiled and looked at Dolores, then looked at the child in her arms. Her heart was full of joy, even though that was not Armandâs child.
Between Armand, Boyce and Matthew, Matthew was the oldest. They were only a few years apart.
âYou guys arenât as smart as Matthew,â he said as he pointed to Boyce and Armand. âLook at your wife, she looks so beautiful. Look at these two children and then at yourselves, how do you look after such a comparison?â Dolores was speechless.
She was embarrassed to be complimented in such a frank manner.
Boyce scratched his head as he wondered how this could turn her on.
Armand covered his face with his hands hopelessly.
Indeed, he was not as capable as Matthew. But could he not point it out?
It pained him.
Matthew was the happiest person in the place. He had a smile on his mouth and his eyes lit up. What could be prouder than the fact that his wife and children were complemented by others?
âGrandma, weâd better get going now. Or there wonât be any more food,â Armand dragged her away.
âAll you think about is food. If you couldnât get a wife, Iâll have your guts as compensation!â said Mistress Leslie directly and seriously.
Armand laughed, âIf you have my guts as compensation, who will take care of you then?â
âI wonât need you to take care of me. I can go to a nursing home instead.â Mistress Leslie made it clear.
Dolores laughed as she now knew, no doubt, that Armand actually shared the same temperament as her grandmother.
They were both fun and cheerful.
That was actually a good temperament. Even his hair was almost completely gray, he seemed more energetic than most young men.
Dolores turned around with the little girl in her arms and was about to go upstairs when she noticed that Theresa, who was standing near her, seemed subdued.
âTake care of her,â she said as she handed her daughter in her arms to Matthew.
She wished to talk to Theresa alone.
When Matthew picked up his daughter and murmured in Doloresâ ear, âYou are so capable that you have given birth to two children at once.â
Dolores raised her eyes to him. He was such a silly man.
He held his daughter in one hand and his son in the other and took a quick step back as if he hadnât just said anything. âAll right, letâs go.â
âIâll go with you.â Boyce kept pace. They would have to wait until another day and there was nothing special to do, so heâd like to find something to pass the time. âWe can form a group the four of us.â
âWhat are we forming a group for?â inquired Samuel.
âOf course to play a game of cards,â Boyce replied.
âIf you want to play, please go out and play,â frowned Matthew.
Donât set a bad example.
âIâm just kidding,â Boyce said with a smile.
âLetâs both play a game by the name of âsharpshooter,â Boyce.â Samuel let go of Matthewâs hand and hurried over to Boyce. He had recently found the game fascinating, but had no one to play with him.
Boyce was intrigued when he heard the name, âVale.â
The two people shared the same interest, so they went upstairs first.
Downstairs, Dolores approached Theresa and said, âCan we go for a walk outside?â Theresa nodded.
There was a breeze outside, so Dolores snuggled in as the two women strolled beside the road.
In their ears, they could hear the wind whistling.
Dolores didnât speak first, as this was Theresaâs personal problem, and she had no idea how to get it off her chest.
After a while, Theresa finally opened her mouth and said, âArmand and I are pretending. We were drunk and were accidentally seen by you. I was embarrassed, so he came out with the suggestion to pretend we were in a relationship,â she admitted.
Dolores realized something was wrong when Armandâs grandmother arrived, he didnât introduce her to Theresa.
âWhat do you think of him then? Armandâ¦â
âHeâs not my type, we just pretend.â Theresa made it clear.
Dolores said no more, as she sometimes believed that Armand liked Theresa. But all she could do was respect his decision.
Only the person involved could say whether it was convenient or not.
She could only express her concern rather than intervene in the matter.
It was a form of respect.
âWhatever decision you make, I will certainly support you,â she said as she draped her arm over Theresaâs shoulders.
Theresa smiled. She liked Dolores because she was sympathetic to her feelings.
Buzzâ¦
The phone in Doloresâ pocket buzzed at that moment, she pulled it out and checked the caller IDâ¦.
