Dolores couldnât believe her ears. Jessicaâs words hit her like a thunderclap, and she felt as if cold water had been poured on her from head to toe and her whole body was numb.
Jessica grabbed Doloresâ hands immediately, âLolaâ¦â.
Dolores roughly shook off Jessicaâs hand and stood up. She backed up a few steps, her lips trembling, âDo you forget how he forced you to divorce him and threw you, pregnant, abroad and didnât even care about you? Youâre telling me you want to remarry him now!â
âI used to be a bad person. But, while you were away, he visited me often. And he regretted things from beforeâ¦â
âCan you believe it!â Dolores cut her off with a stern tone. She scratched her hair angrily, how could this happen?
âMom, how can you easily trust his sweet words? You have to be aware that he has abandoned you, just like Beulah. He is a heartless person, how can you continue to believe in his sweet words?â
Jessica remained stern, her head lowered, âIâve made up my mind.â
Dolores leaned against the wall and looked at Jessica, âSo, youâre just reporting to me today then?â
âYou can say it.â Jessica clenched her own hands tightly, and an icy glint crossed her eyes. She felt guilty in front of her daughter, âIâm sorry youâre suffering with meâ¦â
âYou know this doesnât matter to me. Iâm afraid Randolph will hurt you again.â Dolores hadnât expected Jessica to want to tell her such a thing.
âI know.â Jessica moved closer to Dolores. She wanted to grab her hand, but she shook it off.
Dolores turned her head and was reluctant to look at her.
Jessicaâs fingers flexed as she slowly withdrew her hand, âIâve made up my mind.â
There was no room for rebuttal. Dolores refused, leaving Jessica with no choice, âIâll move in today.â
âWhy are you in such a hurry?â Dolores couldnât understand how she could forgive him so easily for causing her so much pain.
âHave you already forgotten about Jeremy?â Dolores didnât want to talk about it, but tried to persuade her at Jessicaâs insistence.
Jessicaâs heart fluttered for a moment at the sound of that name. She wouldnât forget, and she wouldnât forget for the rest of her life. But just because she couldnât get it out of her mind, she wanted to remarry Randolph.
She clenched her fists. The death of her son would be a lingering pain in her heart forever.
But for Dolores, she was more to blame.
âOur marriage certificate is done.â continued Jessica.
Dolores wiped her face and smiled disappointedly, âYouâve already made up your mind?â She snorted, âAs your daughter, Iâm in no position to criticize you. But after so many years of sharing our lives and depending on each other, shouldnât you ask my opinion?â
âIâm sorry.â Jessica didnât know what she could say to him except these words.
âYou donât need to apologize to me. This is your business and I have no right to interfere. Do as you wish.â Dolores waved her hand. She was not able to stand here any longer. She was afraid to act or say anything inappropriate to Jessica.
âLolaâ¦â
âDonât say anything.â Dolores left the room with a staggering step.
She couldnât accept Jessicaâs decision. But she knew she couldnât change her mind because of her attitude.
She drank the entire glass of water that was on the table. She wasnât sure when she poured herself the water was already cold.
She shuddered, and her heart broke too.
She couldnât understand Jessicaâs decision.
Why did she want to repeat it after she knew Randolph was dangerous and risked repeating all her previous difficulties?
âWhy?â Dolores leaned her body on the table with her hands.
She wasnât sure when a broad palm cupped her shoulder. She slowly raised her head.
âWhatâs wrong?â Matthew wiped away her tears.
She wasnât sure why she cried even harder after he wiped away her tears.
Her tears rolled one after another.
She threw herself into his arms and her shoulders shrugged endlessly.
Matthew stroked her back and silently comforted her. He couldnât ask her anything if she was like this.
Jessica opened the door and saw them in the living room. She lowered her eyes, âIâll put you to the trouble of taking care of her.â Then she loaded her purse and walked out.
âWhere are you going?â Matthew asked.
It was already very late.
Before Jessica could answer, Dolores yelled, âLet her go!â
Jessicaâs eyes were also red as if she had cried before. However, she would not regret it, and would not even back down after she had made her decision.
âShe had been through a lot with me. Our lives were not easy when she was little. So, if possible, I would like to ask you to take good care of her in the future.â
âI donât need it!â Doloresâ eyes filled with tears, âIf you still remember our hardships, you wonât marry Randolph again! Since you want to go back to him, you donât need to worry about me anymore. You just need to be happy.â
Dolores was trembling because she was agitated.
Matthew hugged her tightly, âCalm down.â
âHow can I calm down? Randolph sees only interest in her eyes. Who had he loved? Now he comes to flatter my mother because I married you. He wants to have a chance with the moon on a stick. But she doesnât understand and thinks Randolph has moved on-is that possible?â
Jessica looked at Dolores, who was agitated, and sighed. Then she turned and walked away without explaining.
When the door to the room closed, Dolores cried even louder, âIs her heart blinded?â
Matthew did not share the same opinion as Dolores. On the contrary, he thought Jessica had her mind set on it.
Dolores was so agitated that he feared she might not be able to hear anything he said to her.
He could only hug her and physically comfort her.
âHe forced my mother to divorce him when I was ten years old, ten years old, how little am I? He sent my mother and me overseas to fawn over the other woman. She didnât care about us. But she wishes to remarry Randolph just for his few words. Does she forget the hardships she suffered in the past? Does she forget Randolphâs heartlessness and how it hurt her?â
âMaybe he has his own thoughts, or maybe he has some difficulties he doesnât want to revealâ¦â
âWhat does Randolph have to threaten her? Even if he has, she can tell me.â
âYouâre too agitated.â Matthew wiped the tears from her face, âCalm down first.â
He carried her upstairs and let her sit on the side of the bed when he finished talking. He headed to the bathroom to get the hot water ready. The bathroom was enveloped in a cloud of white mist in a moment. He came out, âGo take a bath to relax. Then, weâll go find her again to talk to her. She is so agitated that anything inappropriate she says will hurt her feelings.
Dolores lifted her head expressionlessly, and there were still some traces of tears on her cheeks, âDid I say anything out of line?â
âNo.â He stroked her messy hair to the back of her ears, âBe obedient. Go take a bath to calm down and get a good nightâs sleep. Then, if you think she shouldnât remarry Randolph, we can go talk to her againâ¦â
âShe had even gotten the marriage certificate to Randolph when I was gone.â Doloresâs eyes turned red again.
âTrust me. If your mother isnât willing to remarry Randolph, I have a way to get the marriage certificate annulled.â Matthew said quietly.
Doloresâs eyelashes were still glistening with tears. She blinked, wrapped her arms around Matthewâs neck, and looked up at him, âReally?â
