âI have no regrets.â Jessica felt happier and relieved now that Randolph was gone, she didnât think she had done anything wrong.
Dolores looked at Jessica silently for a few moments before asking. âHave you thought about whether or not this is against the law, and how it would affect me?â
âI have.â Jessica believed she could continue to care for the children for her if she managed to flee, or that she would take responsibility if she was arrested, but she could no longer do that. âEven without me, theyâll have a fantastic life. Matthew seems to be a kind man, and since you are the mother of his children, he will treat you accordingly, if only for the sake of his children.â
âSo, you had it all set up for me?â Dolores clenched her fists.
âPlease accept my apology.â Jessica couldnât think of anything else to say.
Dolores was emotional, and it took all her strength not to cry in front of Jessica. âWhat should I tell Samuel and Simona in the future after they said they missed you two days ago, that their grandmother is a murderer?â
Jessicaâs face tightened at the word murderess.
Dolores had realized her lack of sensitivity and immediately regretted it.
âEnjoy your life.â Jessica then stood up and headed for the front door. She paused for a moment, her hand on the doorknob. âThereâs no turning back for me now, donât blame me because I canât fulfill my commitment to take proper care of you, Iâm sincerely sorry.â
Dolores was self-blaming and did not realize the meaning behind her statements.
Jessica would have realized her intent and stopped her if she had cared a little more.
She had the chance to put a stop to it all, but nowâ¦.
Dolores sobbed, her face buried in her hands, knowing that Jessica would go to jail no matter what.
She had a chance to have a happy life in her remaining years, but she decided to ruin it to get revenge on Randolph.
Was it worth it?
Hearing Dolores cry hurt Jessicaâs heart. âDonât be sad, I made the decision understanding the repercussions, the only thing I forgot to consider were your feelings and the childrenâs, tell themâ¦.
Tell them their grandmother went somewhere far away, donât ever bring them back and donât tell them what I did, Iâm not a good role model,â Jessica added, her eyes stinging.
âYou too, donât ever see me again,â Jessica said as she opened the door.
Then she hurried out, fearful of hearing Doloresâ screams and regretting her decision if she stayed any longer.
Boyce and Matthew were standing in the hallway, staring as the door opened.
âMay I speak with you in private?â Jessica fixed her gaze on Matthew.
Boyce sensed Matthewâs intent when Matthew didnât respond, so he said, âHave a chat,â and walked away.
Jessica approached him, hands clasped in front of her. âCan you do me a favor?â she asked after a while.
âPlease continue,â Matthew said calmly, his tone devoid of passion.
âLola went through a lot when she was with me as I didnât take good care of her and now I have made her sad. Iâm sad and guilty, Iâm afraid I wonât be able to take care of the children anymore, please take care of them.â
âThey are my wife and children, I will not allow any more harm to come to them.â He didnât commit, but he made it sound like one.
âI have faith in you.â Jessica reached into her pocket and handed Matthew a piece of jewelry. âPlease give it to him and tell him it was given to him by his mother.â Matthew refused it.
âSheâs in a lot of shock right now, soâ¦â Jessica hastened to explain.
Matthew understood the situation and took the necklace.
The platinum necklace had no pendant. He contemplated the necklace as he remembered Jessicaâs words. âYou left this for her?â he asked, having a strange feeling.
Jessica was silent for a moment before answering, âYes.â She said after a short pause.
âHeâs still in the room, his feeling is unsteady, take a look at him.â Jessica then went to the door and called out to Boyce.
Boyce didnât immediately pull her out, instead, he looked at Matthew to get his thoughts.
Matthew waved his hand. Boyce understood that gesture and took Jessica away.
Matthew stepped back and examined the necklace in his hand, sensing a deeper meaning in Jessicaâs words.
But then he became convinced that, if Jessica wasnât his mother, who was?
He thought he had overthought it, but Jessicaâs method was strange.
Then he left the jewelry and headed for Boyceâs office.
Someone was sobbing behind the ajar door.
It sounded sad and depressing.
His vision darkened and he gently pushed the door.
Dolores instantly turned away when she heard someone enter, not because she felt better, but because she didnât want to cry in front of the others.
Dolores didnât look at Matthew as he approached. âCome on,â she replied, wiping her face.
Matthew pulled her into his arms and stroked her hair. âYou donât have to act tough in front of me if you want to cry.â
âIâm upset and sad not because he didnât tell me, but because what he did isnât worth it, isnât worth losing your life over an idiot like that,â Dolores said, her head buried in his chest.
âMaybe it is worth it to her?â. Matthew comforted her. âDo you think she could relax or be happy in her life if thereâs always something hidden in her heart that she canât let go of?â
Matthew had his points, and Dolores kept silent. However, she couldnât accept it.
âHow long will she be incarcerated if there is enough evidence?â she asked, her hands gripping Matthewâs neck.
With his hand, he massaged her back, rubbed her spine and reassured her. âIt wonât be long.â
Dolores was still nervous, but she had improved. She hoped that, with Boyceâs help, Jessicaâs sentence would be reduced.
âLetâs go home.â Matthew wrapped his arms around her waist.
He wrapped Dolores in his jacket and left the room as Dolores nodded in his arms. Outside, Boyce was waiting for them.
âDonât worry, I wonât let your mother suffer, this is just an accident and her grief will be lessened. It wonât be long.â He reassured Dolores.
He put a lot of emphasis on the word âaccidentâ.
Dolores instantly understood the situation. âThank you,â she expressed her gratitude.
âNo need to thank me,â Boyce said with a smile.
Even after the New Year, the weather was still frigid, with snow melting and water tickling everywhere.
The vehicle arrived at the Nelson residence.
Dolores wiped her face and gently patted her face to improve her appearance. She didnât want the children to know she was crying because it was New Yearâs Day.
Simona pounced on her as soon as she entered the house, barely having time to put on her slippers. âMommy, Mommy, is this for me?â Simona grabbed her leg and held out the pigeon egg in her hand.
