A group of uniformed men stood at the door as if they came prepared.
The people at the door couldnât stop them. Matthew tucked Dolores in and stood up.
gⱯlnÏνð®âsï¼cððº, a world of tales The light in his eyes was hard and fierce: âStand back.â The people guarding the door moved away.
The man in charge sounded official and pulled out an arrest warrant, âWe are doing our duty. Miss Flores is a homicide suspect and must return to the police station with us for investigation.â
Matthew approached. His aura, cultivated by years of dealing with various people, was like an omnipresent web.
The man with the arrest warrant swallowed saliva but did not move. Everyone knew who Matthew was, and so did he. But he was doing his duty. In ancient times, anyone who broke the law was punished, not to mention todayâs society, where everyone was equal.
He reassured himself that there was nothing to fear. He tried to remain calm: âWe are doing our duty. Please cooperate, Mr. Nelson.â This man was not Gilbert. He was a stranger.
Matthew looked at the arrest warrant in his hand, narrowed his eyes slightly, and said unhurriedly, âDoing your duty? What if I donât cooperate?â
The man straightened his neck, obviously trying to act tough like a police officer, but the words he spoke were not at all intimidating. He even shuddered, âObstruction is also a crime.â
âAll right then.â Matthew held out his hand, âYou cuff me. Iâll come back with you guys to check me out.â
It was obvious they werenât Jeffery and Eddieâs people. He would like to see who it was.
The man was in a bit of a panic. He had only instructions to arrest Dolores. He didnât dare arrest this man. He didnât even dare touch him, let alone put handcuffs on him.
Matthew undid two buttons on the collar of his shirt with one hand, âIf you find this difficult, you can let the person who gave you this order come. Iâve always had a bad habit of holding a grudge. I donât have much power, but I have money. How much would you say a personâs life is worth?â
The man was so frightened that his legs went slack and he stammered, âItâs also against the law to pay for a murderâ¦â
Matthew scoffed calmly. His tone was grim and harsh, âWhether you break the law or not is not based on the evidence. Do you have evidence? Donât always talk about breaking the law. Iâm tired of hearing that. Are you going to arrest me, or are you going to call your boss?â
The man seemed to be in a quandary.
Dolores had her hands on her belly and didnât make a sound. Matthew had not told her what the situation consisted of. Since the situation was unclear, she couldnât interfere, much less cause Matthew any trouble. The only thing she could do was to do nothing and leave everything to him.
A group of people blocked the door to the room, but none of them dared to move.
The man thought for a moment, âIâm going to make a call.â
He headed for the stairwell. After making sure no one was there, he took out his phone and made a call.
At that moment, in a private room with excellent privacy, there was a set of clay teapots on the tea table.
Landon deftly washed the tea and brewed it twice before pouring it into the finest clay cup.
He then held the cup in one hand and the bottom in the other, placing it in front of Eddie. I have three children. Because of Matthew, two of my children are missing. Even though Iâm a loser, I canât swallow my anger. Now, you are willing to work with me. I am very grateful. On my own, I have no way to fight. If there is anything I can do for you, Eddie, just let me know. Iâll do whatever it takes. This is my sincerity. Iâd like to toast you with a cup of tea instead of wine.â
Eddie lowered his hand. Landon had aged a lot in the last two years and had more gray hair. No one would feel good about losing two sons at once.
âPlease donât say that.â Eddie picked up his teacup, âI should toast you.â
Landon smiled bitterly, âIâm not the same as I used to be, how can I let you toast me?â
The reputation he had upheld had fallen into disgrace, and the Mary and Sampson affair had become the talk of the town. The Herbert family was getting worse by the day.
People who had once visited him incessantly were no longer there. Who else cared about him?
What were people saying about him?
He couldnât even protect his children. What kind of father was he?
Eddie patted him on the shoulder, âI know itâs not that youâre not good enough, but the Nelson family and the Harris family are too powerful. To be honest with you, Iâm afraid of them too.â
Jeffery felt bad and shuddered as he forced himself on Matthew. He knew it would be too late to wait for Jefferyâs recovery. All his previous efforts would be in vain.
He could not give up half-heartedly.
So he took the initiative to approach Landon.
âI heard it was because of Dolores that your daughterâs engagement was called off.â Eddie deliberately blamed it on Dolores. Matthew was his choice for son-in-law, and Dolores was redundant.
Now he was just using the Herbert family to achieve his goal. Landon didnât even know that Eddie wanted to marry his daughter to Matthew.
He still thought Eddie was very afraid of the Nelson family and the Harris family.
Although Eddieâs current rank was not low, the Chambers Family did not have the strong roots of the Harris family. Jeffery had real power, and there was also the Nelson family. He feared that the Chambers Family would end up in the same situation as the Herbert family.
So he took the initiative to partner with Landon. After all, Matthew killed Landonâs son.
Landon sighed, âI thought I might join the Harris family and the Nelson family after my daughterâs marriage to Matthew. But I didnât expect this woman to suddenly get in my way. Not only did she ruin our marriage, but my son was charmed by her. Finallyâ¦â
Landon let out another sigh.
âLuckily, now we still have a chanceâ¦â Eddie exchanged a look with him.
Landon said, âYeah, now we just have to wait for the good news. Iâll never let her out while sheâs in jail. I must make her pay for the lives of my daughter and son.â
Eddie leaned back in the chair. The red wooden chair was carved with delicate patterns. He tapped his fingers on the armrests as if waiting for the good news to come.
At that moment, Landonâs phone rang on the table and Eddie looked over.
Landon looked at him too, picked up the phone and pressed the answer button.
Soon a voice was heard on the other end of the line, âMatthew has stopped us. We canât catch her.â
Landonâs face changed: âYouâre a policeman. You have a warrant for her arrest. Who is he to stop you from stopping you from stopping her?â
âHe⦠asked me to handcuff him. He also saidâ¦to let the person behind me go.â
Landonâs face went white and his hands shook as he held the phone. Eddie heard the voice on the other end of the line, touched Landon, looked at him and said, âIf we canât get her this time, we wonât have a chance next time. We wouldnât even have had this chance if we hadnât taken advantage of Matthewâs lack of preparation. He brought a lot of people with him and the hospital only had a few guards. His people are enough to get it out.â
âYou mean do it the hard way?â Landon asked.
âIs there another way? As long as we get Dolores, weâll have something on Matthew. Even if Matthew knows youâve done it afterward, he wouldnât dare do anything to youâ¦â
âWhat weâve done,â Landon reminded, âEven if heâs contributed people, weâre in this together.â
The Herbert family had trained their own people in their prime. But City B had the Harris family and the Chambers Family. His people had no chance of moving up.
Without Eddie, he couldnât even get a warrant.
Eddie chuckled lightly, âA slip of the tongue. Donât take it to heart. Weâre in the same boat.â
Landon looked at him, made up his mind and said into the phone, âWhy are you bringing all these people in? You need to arrest her today.â
